The surface structure and dynamics, such as step orientation, step dynamics, and the stability of small copper piles, are markedly influenced by the adsorbed species. The reordering of steps along the close-packed Cl rows and the decomposition of a pile of terraces were observed using atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
