Notes: Abstract The structure of the photon states and dispersion of cavity polaritons in semiconductor microcavities with two-dimensional optical confinement (photon wires), fabricated from planar Bragg structures with a quantum well in the active layer, are investigated by measuring the angular dependence of the photoluminescence spectra. The size quantization of light due to the wavelength-commensurate lateral dimension of the cavity causes additional photon modes to appear. The dispersion of polaritons in photon wires is found to agree qualitatively with the prediction for wires having an ideal quantum well, for which the spectrum is formed by pairwise interaction between exciton and photon modes of like spatial symmetry. The weak influence of the exciton symmetry-breaking random potential in the quantum well indicates a mechanism of polariton production through light-induced collective exciton states. This phenomenon is possible because the light wavelength is large in comparison with the exciton radius and the dephasing time of the collective exciton state is long.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The fatigue strength characteristics of steels St. 45 and 1Kh13 and the kinetics of the variation in cyclic inelastic strains of these materials were investigated; it was shown that the stabilized value of the inelastic strain per cycle is a measure of the intensity of the accumulation of fatigue damage under constant loading conditions. 2. A method based on taking into account inelastic strains was developed for determining the endurance of a specimen at various stress levels without testing it to fracture. 3. It was shown that the deviation of experimental data from the linear hypothesis of the summation of fatigue damage is attributable, firstly, to the disparity between the endurance of an individual specimen and the endurance determined from the averaged fatigue curve and, secondly, to the inherently nonlinear character of the accumulation of fatigue damage in a material under programmed loading conditions. 4. The accumulation of fatigue damage under programmed loading conditions can be characterized in terms of the inelastic cyclic strains. 5. A formula taking account of factors discussed in the item No. 3 of these conclusions and describing the accumulation of fatigue damage in metals was derived.

Notes: Conclusions 1. For the materials tested the magnitude of inelastic strain per cycle in the stabilization stage of the inelastic strain process is a characteristic of the intensity of the fatigue damage accumulation in individual testpieces under identical loading conditions, characterized by stress amplitude. 2. It has been shown on the basis of mathematical statistical methods that scatter in endurance values of the relatively linear regression equation in coordinates logΔε-log Nf is essentially less than for the regression equation in coordinates σ-log Nf, and may be used to increase the forecasting accuracy for longterm endurance of materials and constructional elements.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The most significant structural changes are concentrated in a thin surface layer, which is related to the character of distribution of thermal loads under conditions of the corrosive action of the medium. 2. Structural damages accumulating during service have a two-stage character: a) the removal of microdistortions and an increase in the dimensions of the blocks as a result of the removal of mechanical work hardening in the surface layer of new blades (the density of defects decreases); b) disintegration of the elements of the substructure back to dimensions smaller than in the original conditions; the microdistortions remain insignificant (lines become broader). The effect observed is caused by an increase in the boundary density of dislocations. 3. The similarity of the structural changes in different zones of the trailing edge of the blade in the last stages of service and the two-stage character of the change in fatigue strength is an indication of the difficulty of simulating long-term failure of heterophase alloys by short-term tests.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The kinetics of the change in cyclic inelastic deformations in 45 and 1Kh13 steels were investigated with a steady and a programmed change in load and it was shown that the value of the inelastic deformation depends upon the stress level and the number of load cycles. 2. It was established that in steady tests the rule of distribution of the stabilized values of inelastic deformation per cycle for each specific load level is close to the normal. 3. The relationship of the stabilized value of inelastic deformation per cycle to stress for 45 and 1Kh13 steels may be presented in the form of a straight line taking into account probability.

Notes: Conclusions 1. An accelerated method of determining the endurance limit from the cyclic strain diagram [7] can be used to determine the endurance-limit distribution function. 2. Comparison of the distribution functions obtained for cylindrical smooth specimens of steel 45 by the proposed method and the “up-and-down” method showed that their difference is not statistically significant. 3. Statistical analysis shows that the accelerated method is more efficient than the “up-and-down” method under the condition that the same number of specimens is tested in both cases. 4. The “up-and-down” method permits the determination of the parameters of only normallaw endurance-limit distributions. There is no such restriction on the accelerated method. 5. The time required to determine the endurance-limit distribution function by the accelerated method is 20–30 times shorter than the time required with the “up-and-down” method.
