Notes: Abstract The role of fibroblasts in the differentiation of the epidermis and its relationships with other somatic cells, specifically, keratinocytes, are studied using a skin equivalent formed from various types of fibroblasts separated from thoracic skin of a healthy donor, apparently healthy skin sites and plaques from a patient with psoriasis, keloids and upper eyelid skin of a normal subject, and keratinocytes separated from the umbilical skin of a newborn. Fibroblasts are shown to be active participants in the differentiation and formation of epidermis specificity. Various types of fibroblasts form a histologically different skin equivalent possessing the specific properties of the epidermis of the skin sites from which they were isolated.

Description: Little is known about marine mineral deposits in the Arctic Ocean, an ocean dominated by continental shelf and basins semi-closed to deep-water circulation. Here, we present data for ferromanganese crusts and nodules collected from the Amerasia Arctic Ocean in 2008, 2009, and 2012 (HLY0805, HLY0905, and HLY1202). We determined mineral and chemical compositions of the crusts and nodules and the onset of their formation. Water column samples from the GEOTRACES program were analyzed for dissolved and particulate scandium concentrations, an element uniquely enriched in these deposits. The Arctic crusts and nodules are characterized by unique mineral and chemical compositions with atypically high growth rates, detrital contents, Fe/Mn ratios, and low Si/Al ratios, compared to deposits found elsewhere. High detritus reflects erosion of submarine outcrops and North America and Siberia cratons, transport by rivers and glaciers to the sea, and distribution by sea ice, brines, and currents. Uniquely high Fe/Mn ratios are attributed to expansive continental shelves, where diagenetic cycling releases Fe to bottom waters, and density flows transport shelf bottom water to the open Arctic Ocean. Low Mn contents reflect the lack of a mid-water oxygen minimum zone that would act as a reservoir for dissolved Mn. The potential host phases and sources for elements with uniquely high contents are discussed with an emphasis on scandium. Scandium sorption onto Fe oxyhydroxides and Sc-rich detritus account for atypically high scandium contents. The opening of Fram Strait in the Miocene and ventilation of the deep basins initiated Fe-Mn crust growth ∼15 Myr ago.

Notes: Abstract The effect of irradiation by 300-keV Ar+ ions on the properties of electrochemically produced porous silicon is studied at doses of 5×1014–1×1016 cm−2. Raman scattering and photoluminescence data are used to show that the radiation hardness of porous silicon layers is substantially greater than that of single crystal silicon.

Notes: Summary Results of a cytogenetic and morphological study of 60 malignant lymphomas (ML) are presented. The most often observed chromosome abnormalities were rearrangements involving 14q32, 11q13, 11q21-23, 6q15, 6q21, 12p11-12, 17p11-12, and extra chromosomes 18, 3, 21 and 7. Translocations involving 14q32, leading to the appearance of marker 14q+, were noted in 41% of the tumors. Strict correlations between karyotype and morphology of ML were not seen. However, rearrangements of 11q were mostly found in lowgrade tumors and markers 6q-in high-grade tumors. The absence of t(14;18), which is regarded to be the most common abnormality in ML, and an unusually high incidence of t(11;14) in our series confirm the uneven geographical distribution of ML with these translocations. Chromosome abnormalities in ML and acute lymphoblastic leukemia are compared.

Notes: Abstract We present data on the population genetics of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Bulgaria, obtained by comprehensive mutation analysis and the construction of intragenic microsatellite haplotypes. The sample of 262 CF alleles analysed is representative of the patients diagnosed during the period of referral and of the three main ethnic groups in the country. ΔF508 accounted for 100% of Gypsy CF alleles, which thus differed significantly from both Bulgarians and ethnic Turks. In Bulgarian and Turkish CF patients, 92% of the mutant alleles were identified, yielding a total of 25 different mutations, of which only 7 occurred at frequencies higher than 1%. The findings were compared to other European populations and to the distribution of phenylketonuria mutations. Genetic distances and population trees demonstrated that in the south-eastern tip of Europe, the overall distribution of CF mutations and polymorphic haplotypes is very close to that of Mediterranean populations, with a high frequency of N1303K and G542X, a large number of rare mutations and a prevalence of the 23 31 13 haplotype in association with ΔF508. These findings are consistent with a main role for the Neolithic expansion in the shaping of the CF mutation spectrum in Bulgaria and southern Europe.

Notes: Summary The data of the chromosome abnormalities in 15 colorectal tumors are presented. Rearrangements of the short arm of chromosome 17, leading to deletions of this arm or its part were noted in 12 tumors; in 2 other cases, one of the homologs of pair 17 was lost. The losses of at least one homolog of other chromosomal pairs were also found: chromosome 18, in 12 out of 13 cases with fully identified numerical abnormalities; chromosome 5, in 6 tumors; chromosome 21, in 5 cases; chromosomes 4, 15, and 22, in 4 cases each. Additional homologs of pair 20 were observed in 6 tumors, extra 8q was found in 5 tumors, and extra 13q in 6 cases. Rearrangements of the short arm of chromosome 1 and the long arm of chromosome 11 characterized 6 tumors each. The data recorded in our series differ from the data of other authors in two respects: the high incidence of the loss of sex chromosomes and the rearrangements of the long arm of chromosome 9. X chromosomes were missing in 4 out of 7 tumors in females, and Y chromosomes were absent in 5 out of 8 tumors in males. The long arm of chromosome 9 was rearranged in 8 cases, in 5 of them the breakpoint being at 9q22. Cytological manifestations of gene amplification (double minutes or multiple microchromosomes) were noted in 6 tumors.

Notes: Abstract.  Spectral and kinetic dependencies of photovoltaic effects in porous silicon-crystal substrate structures have been studied. Both as-prepared and aged in air samples were used. It is shown for the first time that besides the photovoltage component connected with a depleted region in the silicon substrate at the interface with the porous layer there is a photovoltage due to porous silicon itself. It is established that the electron states with the relaxation time about several minutes are located on the pores surface. The properties of these states changed with the thermal annealing of structures. The “superslow” hole traps with a relaxation time of about several hours were registered in the aged samples. These traps are located in the oxide on the silicon skeleton surface of the porous silicon. An energy diagram based on the data is suggested that explains the appearance of photovoltaic effects in the investigated structures.

Notes: Abstract Kinetics of the decay of photoluminescence of Er impurity in the films of amorphous hydrogenated Si a-Si:H〈Er〉 was studied for the first time. The films were obtained either by cosputtering of Si and Er targets with the use of the technology of dc silane decomposition in a magnetic field (MASD) or by radio-frequency decomposition of silane. In the second case, an Er(TMHD)3 polymer powder was used as the source of Er. It is shown that, at room temperature, the a-Si:H〈Er〉 films obtained by the MASD method feature the characteristic times of Er photoluminescence decay equal to 10–15 µs, which is 20 times smaller than in the case of Er-doped crystalline Si (c-Si〈Er, O〉) as measured at liquid-nitrogen temperature. For the a-Si:H〈Er〉 films obtained by radio-frequency decomposition of silane, the decay times of Er photoluminescence amount to 2 µs. The difference in the photoluminescence decay times is related to dissimilarities in the local surroundings of Er atoms in the a-Si:H〈Er〉 films obtained by different methods.
