Description: Oeberst, R., Klenz, B., Gröhsler, T., Dickey-Collas, M., Nash, R. D. M., and Zimmermann, C. 2009. When is year-class strength determined in western Baltic herring? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1667–1672. Weekly surveys of larvae in the Strelasund and the Greifswalder Bodden were used to investigate when year-class strength is determined in western Baltic spring-spawning (WBSS) herring. An abundance metric of larvae reaching a length of 20 mm over the entire spawning season was constructed by accounting for increases in daily growth resulting from seasonal increases in temperature (5–20°C). The index was significantly correlated with the acoustic estimates of age-1 herring in the western Baltic Sea (r = 0.88) and with the estimates of year-class strength obtained from stock assessment (r = 0.65). Previous studies of herring elsewhere have reported that year-class strength is determined during the late larval stage, but we show that year-class strength can already be fixed at a larval length of only 20 mm. Although the index obtained may be used in stock assessment and predictions, the intriguing question remains, namely how can the signal of larval productivity from one single spawning component of WBSS herring reflect the year-class dynamics of the entire stock?

Description: Fish larvae surveys provide information on the species composition in an area of investigation and leads to a better understanding of the entire fish community. Since 2000 every year in April/May an ichthyoplankton survey in ICES-Subdivision 22 and 24 has been performed to sample the plankton community in the western Baltic Sea. One objective was to acquire indicators of possible changes in the natural structures of the fish community. The time series derived from the Bongo-Net samples is too short to show a trend in larval densities. Up to now samples in the western Baltic Sea yielded only low mean densities. According to the reproductive biology the fish species were divided in three major groups:-Fish species with a long developmental phase in the plankton community-Small short living species with benthic eggs and a reduced planktonic phase-Guests without local spawning populationsSpecies were identified, which were absent in the plankton of the western Baltic Sea in the 1960s and 1970s.

Description: Several fishery independent estimates of the year-class strength are necessary for the assessment and the ma-nagement of the total fish stock. An index for the year-class strength of the spring spawning herring in the western Baltic Sea is estimated on the basis of larvae surveys in the most important spawning ground. The results indicate a good year-class 2004.

Description: Since 1977 larvae surveys have been carried out in the Greifswalder Bodden and the Strelasund every year to estimate an index of the year-class strength for the western Baltic herring stock. Different methods have been used to minimize the very extensive analytical work in the laboratory since 1993. As a further possibility the use of the mean dry weight of the larvae was investigated. This method was applied successfully to estimate the number of eggs in cod gonads. 88 samples of herring larvae were analysed. These experiments show that the use of themean dry weight of herring larvae is not suited to reduce the work in the laboratory, because the accuracy of the estimates is unacceptable.

Description: The German larvae surveys in the main spawning area of the herring of the western Baltic Sea - an international important program. The article gives an overview over the German herring larvae surveys in the Greifswalder Bodden and Strelasund. This program is performed under ecological points of view annually in the main spawning area of the herring of the western Baltic Sea and delivers indices, which are well suited as independent estimates of the herring year-class strength.
