    Description: Three ozone tape products from the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) experiment aboard Nimbus 7 were archived at the National Space Science Data Center. The experiment measures the fraction of incoming radiation backscattered by the Earth's atmosphere at 12 wavelengths. In-flight measurements were used to monitor changes in the instrument sensitivity. Total column ozone is derived by comparing the measurements with calculations of what would be measured for different total ozone amounts. The altitude distribution is retrieved using an optimum statistical technique for the inversion. The estimated initial error in the absolute scale for total ozone is 2 percent, with a 3 percent drift over 8 years. The profile error depends on latitude and height, smallest at 3 to 10 mbar; the drift increases with increasing altitude. Three tape products are described. The High Density SBUV (HDSBUV) tape contains the final derived products - the total ozone and the vertical ozone profile - as well as much detailed diagnostic information generated during the retrieval process. The Compressed Ozone (CPOZ) tape contains only that subset of HDSBUV information, including total ozone and ozone profiles, considered most useful for scientific studies. The Zonal Means Tape (ZMT) contains daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly averages of the derived quantities over 10 deg latitude zones.

    Description: Contours and gridded values are given for seven years of monthly mean total ozone data derived from observations with the Backscattered Ultraviolet instrument on Nimbus-4 for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The instrument, algorithm, uncertainties in derived ozone and systematic changes in the bias with respect to the international groundbased ozone network of Dobson instruments, are discussed.

    Description: Raw data from the Solar Backscattered Ultrviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation are available on computer tape. These data are contained on two separate sets of RUTs (Raw Units Tapes) for SBUV and TOMS, labelled RUT-S and RUT-T respectively. The RUT-S and RUT-T tapes contain uncalibrated radiance and irradiance data, housekeeping data, wavelength and electronic calibration data, instrument field-of-view location and solar ephemeris information. These tapes also contain colocated cloud, terrain pressure and snow/ice thickness data, each derived from an independent source. The "RUT User's Guide" describes the SBUV and TOMS experiments, the instrument calibration and performance, operating schedules, and data coverage, and provides an assessment of RUT-S and -T data quality. It also provides detailed information on the data available on the computer tapes.

    Description: Total-ozone and ozone vertical profile results for Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation from November 1978 to November 1979 are available. The algorithm used have been thoroughly tested, the instrument performance has been examined in details, and the ozone results have been compared with Dobson, Umkehr, balloon, and rocket observations. The accuracy and precision of the satellite ozone data are good to at least within the ability of the ground truth to check and are self-consistent to within the specifications of the instrument. The 'SBUV User's Guide' describes the SBUV experiment and algorithms used. Detailed information on the data available on computer tape is provided including how to order tapes from the National Space Science Data Center.

    Description: A simple archive cost model has been developed to help predict NASA's archiving costs. The model covers data management activities from the beginning of the mission through launch, acquisition, and support of retrospective users by the long-term archive; it is capable of determining the life cycle costs for archived data depending on how the data need to be managed to meet user requirements. The model, which currently contains 48 equations with a menu-driven user interface, is available for use on an IBM PC or AT.

    Description: An analytic model approach is applied to several simple atmospheric inversion problems. This method gives a sharp determination of aerosol size distribution parameters. It is shown that this analytic approach, together with ground level point sampling data measurements, can be used to infer information on the tropospheric ozone profile.

    Description: Two years of SBUV/TOMS (Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) data spanning the period November 1978 to October 1980 have been processed and compared with ground-based ozone measurements made at 62 Dobson spectrophotometer and 18 M83 filter photometer ozone stations. Results show that the satellite ozone values are consistently smaller than those measured by the stations; most of this difference is probably due to an error in the currently accepted ozone absorption cross sections at ultraviolet wavelengths. Dobson-derived ozone amounts agree extremely well with those derived from each of the satellite instruments. Long-term stability of the ozone derived by the two instruments is expected to be better than 0.5 percent per year.

    Description: The dependence of the ratio of the diffuse to direct irradiances at the ground were examined for a wavelength of 315.1 nm. A passive remote sensing method based on ratio measurements for obtaining the optical thickness of SO2 in the vertical column was proposed. If, in addition to the ratio measurements, the SO2 density at the ground is determining using an appropriate point-sampling technique then some inference on the vertical extent of SO2 can be drawn. An analytic representation is presented of the ratio for a wide range of SO2 and aerosol optical thicknesses and solar zenith angles which can be inverted algebraically to give the SO2 optical thickness in terms of the measured ratio, aerosol optical thickness and solar zenith angle.

    Description: Standard profiles based on upper level averaged profiles from BUV and lower level averaged profiles from balloon measurements are presented in a parametric representation as a function of time of year and latitude. The representation is a simple 4-parameter function representing the ozone amount (m-atm-cm) in each of 12 atmospheric layers defined following the standard Umkehr convention. The same parameterization is applied to the Nimbus-7 SBUV data and is compared to the BUV/balloon parameterization. The ozone variance unaccounted for by the representation is presented and discussed. The season-latitude representation reduces considerably the ozone variance at all levels and explains much of the correlation between layers. This simple representation and corresponding covariance matrix have been used as a priori information in the ozone vertical profile inversion of the Nimbus-7 SBUV experimental measurements.
