The electrochemical hydrogen-potential at Ni and Ni—Fe catalysts on the hydrogenation of cinnamic acid ethyl ester is not or only slightly altered by poisoning with thiophene, ethyl and benzyl mercaptane. In the case of thiophene, very small amounts of it enhance the catalytical activity. This effect and the differences between the influence of thiophene and the mercaptanes are interpreted assuming simultaneously occurring electronic interaction and surface blocking. Two kinds of surface areas having different crystallographic orientations are supposed to be responsible for the observed two-maxima enhancement of the catalytical activity at increasing thiophene concentration.

Das elektrochemische Wasserstoff-Potential an Nickel- und Nickel-Eisen-Katalysatoren bei der Hydrierung von Zimtsäureäthylester wird durch Zusatz von Thiophen, Äthyl- und Benzylmercaptan, auch bei stärkerer Vergiftung, nicht oder nur unwesentlich verändert. Sehr kleine Konzentrationen an Thiophen, nicht aber der Marcaptane, rufen eine mit wachsendem Eisengehalt der Katalysatoren abnehmende Verstärkung der katalytischen Aktivität hervor.Die verstärkende Wirkung des Thiophens, sowie die Unterschiede in der Wirkung zwischen Thiophen und den Mercaptanen werden durch das Ineinandergreifen von elektronischer Beeinflussung und Blockierung erklärt. Ein doppeltes Maximum der Verstärkungs- Konzentrations-Kurve wird mit der nacheinander erfolgenden Verstärkung an kristallographisch verschieden orientierten Oberflächenbereichen gedeutet.
