    Managing service quality 14 (2004), S. 134-146

Notes: Little attention has been paid to prospective customers who defect before buying. This paper examines the almost customer phenomenon. It reviews literature on service quality, customer satisfaction, retention, relationships, loyalty and defection. It also categorizes the causes of almost customer experiences into a series of themes. The almost customer phenomenon and its effects are presented in the context of implications for managers and for future research. The almost customer phenomenon may appear to be a study of early customer defection, but the almost customer defects before buying. The customer defection literature assumes that a firm has attracted customers. But, not every attempted transaction leads to a purchase. Sometimes, elements of the interaction have an impact on whether or not the individual buys. This paper examines defection before a customer becomes a customer. Reducing the incidence of almost customer episodes represents an opportunity for firms to optimize growth and profitability.

Notes: This paper identifies the extent to which front-line managers in the hospitality, retail and banking sectors perceive work activities to be pleasant or unpleasant. General factorial multivariate analysis of variance was used to assess attitudes towards ten activities according to demographic characteristics. The activities were: deskwork, decision making, developing, disciplining, informing, innovating, leading, monitoring, persuading and time pressure. The findings indicate that managers in the service sector generally have a range of perceptions about activities, with some regarded as pleasant and others as unpleasant. The managerial perceptions identified in this study could have useful implications for the introduction of attempts to enhance staff motivation and performance. An improved awareness of managerial activity preferences on the part of senior managers and researchers may help to avoid certain problems and strengthen staff motivation. The present research is exploratory and should be followed up with a thorough assessment of whether there is a relationship between performance and activity preference.

Notes: This paper used input-output analysis to compare the initial and flow-on economic effects of tourism spending by two different types of tourists from Australia to Sri Lanka. The two groups of tourists were Sri Lankan migrants resident in Australia and Australians born either in Australia or in a country other than Sri Lanka. The paper also covered the needs and perceptions of the target audiences. The two sample surveys undertaken revealed that different expenditure priorities are evident between the two groups. Non-expatriate tourists were found to constitute only a small proportion of total tourist numbers. This group spent more on food and beverages with relatively higher flow-on effects. Expatriate expenditures focused on the retail and wholesale sector and on local transport with relatively lower flow-on effects. The mean expenditure incurred by migrants was more than twice that of the non-migrants. The results indicate that small markets like Australia merit close scrutiny by the Ceylon Tourist Board and that travel by expatriates generally merits closer examination.

Notes: Abstract Field studies of tidal flows in largely pristine mangrove swamps suggestthat the momentum equation simplifies to a balance between the water surfaceslope and the drag force. The controlling parameter is the vegetation lengthscale LE, which is a function of the projected area ofmangrove vegetation and the volume of the vegetation. The value ofLE varies greatly with mangrove species and water depth. It isfound that the drag coefficient is related to the Reynolds number Re definedusing LE. The drag coefficient decreases with increasingvalues of Re from a maximum value of 10 at low value of Re (〈104), and converges towards 0.4 for Re 〈 5 ×104.
