    Description: Reanalyzed products from a MOM3-based East Sea Regional Ocean Model with a 3- dimentional variational data assimilation module (DA-ESROM), have been compared with the observed hydrographic and current datasets in the Ulleung Basin (UB) of the East/Japan Sea (EJS). Satellite-borne sea surface temperature and sea surface height data, and in-situ temperature profiles have been assimilated into the DA-ESROM. The performance of the DA-ESROM appears to be efficient enough to be used in an operational ocean forecast system. Comparing with the results from Mitchell et al. (2005a), the DA-ESROM fairly well simulates the high variability of the Ulleung Warm Eddy and Dok Cold Eddy as well as the branching of the Tsushima Warm Current in the UB. The overall root-mean-square error between 100m temperature field reproduced by the DA-ESROM and the observed 100-dbar temperature field is 2.1°C, and the spatially averaged grid-to-grid correlation between the two temperature fields is high with a mean value of 0.79 for the intercomparison period. The DA-ESROM reproduces the development of strong southward North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) in summer consistent with the observational results, which is thought to be an improvement of the previous numerical models in the EJS. The reanalyzed products show that the NKCC is about 35 km wide, and flows southward along the Korean coast from spring to summer with maximum monthly mean volume transport of about 0.8 Sv in August-September.

    Description: Arctic sea ice area (SIA) during late summer and early fall decreased substantially over the last four decades, and its decline accelerated beginning in the early 2000s. Statistical analyses of observations show that enhanced poleward moisture transport from the North Pacific to the Arctic Ocean contributed to the accelerated SIA decrease during the most recent period. As a consequence, specific humidity in the Arctic Pacific sector significantly increased along with an increase of downward longwave radiation beginning in 2002, which led to a significant acceleration in the decline of SIA in the Arctic Pacific sector. The resulting sea ice loss led to increased evaporation in the Arctic Ocean, resulting in a further increase of the specific humidity in mid-to-late fall, thus acting as a positive feedback to the sea ice loss. The overall set of processes is also found in a long control simulation of a coupled climate model.

    Description: The formation mechanism as well as its temporal change of the North Pacific subtropical mode water (NPSTMW) is investigated using a 50‐year (1960–2009) ocean general circulation model hindcast. The volume budget analysis suggests that the formation of the NPSTMW is mainly controlled by the air‐sea interaction and ocean dynamics, but there is a regime shift of the relative importance between the two around late‐1980s. While the local air‐sea interaction process is a main driver of the NPSTMW formation prior to late‐1980s, ocean dynamics including the vertical entrainment become dominant since then. The NPSTMW formation is affected by the North Pacific Oscillation simultaneously in the early period, but with a few years lag in the later period. The interdecadal change of the driving mechanism of the interannual variability of the NPSTMW is probably due to the stronger (weaker) influence of local atmospheric forcing in the western North Pacific and unfavorable (favorable) wind stress curl condition for the remote oceanic forcing from the central North Pacific during the former (later) period. This regime shift may be related to the change of centers of the actions of the wind stress curl since the late‐1980s.

    Notes: In this study, methane gas absorption ability of activated carbon (AC) with surfacefunctional group effect, was evaluated after nitric acid and urea treatment of AC surface. Specificsurface area and pore distribution of AC were studied through nitrogen absorption isotherm at 77 K.Micro pore volume was calculated through H-K method. Absorbed methane amount was evaluatedthrough volumetric method at room temperature by using auto absorption apparatus. Absorbedmethane amount of AC was found to increase with specific surface area increase. Correlationproposed between the methane absorption amount and surface nature indicates that the surfacenature plays an important role on the absorption amount at a given temperature

    Notes: Abstract Autonomously replicating sequence binding factor 1 (ABF1) has been implicated in the control of a variety of gene expressions in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this paper evidence is presented that ABF1 is involved in the glucose-dependent expression of the TDH3 gene which encodes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. ABF1 binds to consensus sites located between-420 and-250, and between +77 and +200, and acts as a transactivator in an orientation-independent manner on both upstream and downstream sites. TDH3-lacZ fusions having an ABF1 consensus motif showed glucose-dependent expression of TDH3, whereas in the abf1 mutant strain JCA35 glucose-dependent expression disappeared. These findings suggest that ABF1 functions as a glucose-dependent transactivator for the expression of the TDH3 gene.

    Notes: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides quantitative information in the magneticresonance imaging on the diffusion anisotropy about the integrity of white matter tracts. The aim ofthis study was to measure diffusion anisotropy and to correlate with upper-limb motor recovery infour chronic hemiparetic patients with thalamic hemorrhage. Fractional anisotropy (FA) wasmeasured in the posterior limb of internal capsules (IC) in the affected side and in the correspondingcontralateral normal side before and after 6 week motor training. The correlation between motorrecovery of the affected hand and the ratio of FAs of the affected side and the contralateral normalside were investigated. Both FA ratio and motor function significantly increased after the training.A significant correlation was found between motor recovery and FA in the posterior limb of IC. Thedegree of impairment in diffusion anisotropy of hemiparetic patients might be helpful in prognosisof the motor function

    Notes: In the construction of composite bridge structures, various types of shear connectors areusually used to provide an efficient load transfer and the composite action of two or more differentmaterials. In the previous work conducted by authors, a new type of the shear connector wasintroduced, which is the perforated shear connector with flange heads (T-shaped perforated shearconnector), and the structural behavior of the shear connector was discussed based on the results ofpush-out tests. For the practical design of new shear connector, it is necessary to develop theequation for the prediction of the load carrying capacity of the shear connector. In this study, theexisting design equations for the Perfobond shear connector were briefly analyzed and the equationfor the prediction of the shear capacity of T-shaped perforated shear connector was suggestedempirically. By comparing the results obtained by the suggested equation, the existing equations forthe Perfobond shear connector, and the experiment, the applicability and effectiveness of thesuggested equation was estimated

    Notes: In this study, we determined joint moments and muscle forces in the lower extremity duringwalking with different heel-height shoes using the 3D motion analysis and the correspondingmusculoskeletal modeling. Totally fifteen healthy women participated in the 3D motion analysis forvarious walking with barefoot, flat shoe, 3cm, 6cm and 9cm high heels. Inverse dynamic simulationswere also performed using a musculoskeletal model in order to calculate joint moments and muscleforces in the lower extremity. As for the hip, joint angles, joint moments and corresponding muscleforces did not show significant differences. Rectus femoris, a biarticular muscle for hip flexor and kneeextensor, revealed stronger effect on the knee than the hip. Soleus, playing the most important role forankle plantarflexor, showed decreases in the maximum muscle force at pre-swing, as heel heightincreased. Tibialis anterior produced larger dorsiflexion moments for foot clearance with higher-heeledshoes

    Notes: This paper presents the results of an investigation on the force transfer mechanism in anembedded column base of a composite structure. In the experimental program, eighteen push-outspecimens were tested. The factors influencing the mechanism of force transfer were the amount ofconfining reinforcement, compressive strength of concrete, and diameter of stud connectors. Theresults of experiment indicated that force transfer could be characterized into two stages, and thefactors governing each stage were identified. The first stage was governed by the bond strengthbetween the steel column base and the concrete. The second stage begun after chemical debondingand was governed by the shear strength of stud connectors as well as the frictional strength betweenthe steel and the concrete. Based on the experimental results, the equations to estimate the bondstrength, the friction strength, and the shear strength of stud connectors were proposed. The loadcarrying capacity of an embedded steel column base could be predicted by taking the sum of theshear strength of stud connectors and the friction strength. The predicted load carrying capacity wasfound to agree well with the experimental results over various range of concrete stress

    Notes: Ba8Al16Si30 type I clathrate was produced by arc melting and thermoelectric propertieswere investigated. The phase transformation behavior of arc-melted type I Ba8Al16Si30 wasexamined by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, hardness test, densitymeasurement, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope analyses. Homogenization wascarried out to induce the transformation to a thermoelectric phase at 773K to 973K for 5 hours and24 hours in the vacuum furnace. Thermoelectric properties in the temperature range between 300Kand 600K were measured and evaluated. Electrical conductivity was decreased and Seebeckcoefficient was increased with increasing homogenization temperature and time. The arc-meltedand the homogenized specimens represented n-type conduction at temperatures examined, and theyshowed reliable thermoelectric behaviors with increasing homogenization temperature and time
