Notes: The early events of activation were studied in paucibacillary (TT/BT) and multibacillary (BL/LL) leprosy patients by stimulation of their lymphocytes with mitogenic agents (calcium ionophore A23187/PMA) and Micobacterium leprae antigen (PGL-1). Maximum proliferation in response to PMA/A23187 and PGL-1 was observed in the BT/TT patients and the control group, respectively. Inositol triphosphate (IP3) and calcium were constitutively elevated in BT/TT and LL/BL patients. PMA/A23187 caused an increase in both IP3 and [Ca2+]i in BT/TT patients and controls. PGL-1 marginally increased IP3 levels in BT/TT patients. In the LL/BL patients, although PMA/A23187 increased IP3 levels, but no change was seen in [Ca2+]i, PGL-1 had no effect. Protein kinase C levels were seen to be associated with particulate fractions in BT/TT patients and were found to increase further in response to PMA/A23187. PGL-1 did not increase translocation of protein kinase C in controls or LL/BL patients. A preactivated and sensitised state of T-lymphocytes was observed in BT/TT patients, responsive to antigen and mitogens, whereas the cells of LL/BL patients were unresponsive to PGL-1. The altered signal transduction events characterised in the MB patients thus correlate well with the anergic state of their cells.

Notes: Summary In order to study the role of -SH group of wool in graft copolymerization, an attempt has been made to study grafting of acrylic acid (AAc) onto reduced wool in aqueous medium using ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as redox initiator. HNO3 was found to catalyze the graft copolymerization. Reduction of wool was effected with thioglycolic acid (TGA) in aqueous medium. Percentage of grafting was determined as a function of concentration of (i) CAN, (ii) vinyl monomer (AAc), (iii) nitric acid, (iv) time and (v) temperature. Under optimum conditions, poly-(acrylic acid) was grafted to the reduced wool to the extent of 9.14%, the unreduced wool under optimum conditions afforded maximum grafting of poly(AAc) to the extent of 12.24%. Reduction of wool does not promote grafting of AAc in the presence of CAN.

Notes: Abstract Four patients with deep mycoses were treated with itraconazole. Two patients had chromoblastomycosis, one patient each had aspergillosis and Rhinofacial zygomycosis. These patients were either resistant to or showed poor response to Amphotericin B and/or ketoconazole. After the initial clinical and mycological evaluation, itraconazole was given in a daily dose of 200 mg orally. All patients responded to the drug very well. No adverse effects attributable to itraconazole were detected.

Notes: Abstract Water-quality parameters and concentrations of various metals in bed sediments of the River Kali and the River Hindon in India were analysed to understand their behaviour in subtropical fluvial systems. Variations in the physico-chemical parameters of the river water and metal content in the bed sediments were recorded in four seasons of the year (post-monsoon, winter, summer and monsoon). Results show that water and sediments contain high cadmium (Cd) and Zinc (Zn). Total and soluble Cd and Zn profiles show that in summer, metals in the water phase exist predominantly in the bound form. Cd and Zn in bed sediments increase from the post-monsoon to the summer season. During and after the monsoon season, metal concentrations in sediments fall rapidly. Correlation coefficients of metals in sediments represent their common source and identical behaviour during transport.

Notes: Radiation-induced graft copolymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine (VP) and a binary mixture of VP and acrylonitrile (AN) onto polyamide-6 (PA6) fiber has been studied. Optimum reaction conditions leading to maximum percentage of grafting have been evaluated. The graft copolymers have been characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and also by studying the dyeing behaviour of the grafted and ungrafted fiber. It has been observed that, although the thermal properties of fibers had changed upon grafting, the dyeing behaviour, with respect to the total dye uptake, did show only little improvement.

Notes: Poly(vinyl acetate) has been graft copolymerized onto Himachali wool in the presence of ceric ammonium nitrate alone and in presence of amines in aqueous medium under a wide variety of reaction conditions. Nitric acid was found to catalyze the graft copolymerization. Maximum grafting under optimum conditions has been determined. Several grafting experiments were carried out in presence of triethylamine and triethanolamine. Both amines were found to reduce the extent of grafting. The decrease in the percent grafting in presence of amines has been explained in terms of a chain-transfer mechanism.

Notes: Radiation-induced graft copolymerization of 4-vinyl pyridine (4-VP) and its binary mixture with acrylonitrile (AN) onto isotactic polypropylene has been studied in aqueous medium. Percentage of grafting has been studied as a function of different reaction parameters and the optimum conditions for affording maximum percentage of grafting have been evaluated. It was observed that there exists an optimum composition of the binary mixture at which percentage of grafting is maximum. The maximum percentage of grafting is obtained at the total monomer concentration of [AN + 4VP] = 0.009 moles. The graft copolymers were characterized by IR spectroscopic methods. An attempt has been made to discuss the effect of acceptor monomer (AN) on percentage of grafting of donor monomer (4-VP).
