Description / Table of Contents: This book contains revised refereed papers selected from the presentations at the First International Workshop on Graphics Recognition, held in University Park, PA, USA, in August 1995. The 23 full papers included are divided into sections on low-level processing, vectorization and segmentation of scanned graphics documents; symbol and diagram recognition, map processing, interpretation of engineering drawings. Each section contains both survey articles to assess the state of the art, and research papers presenting novel results. One section is devoted to a contest held to determine the best algorithm for detection of dashed lines in drawings. The final chapter summarizes the conclusions and recommendations of the discussions held during the workshop.

Notes: Abstract. The performance of the algorithms for the extraction of primitives for the interpretation of line drawings is usually affected by the degradation of the information contained in the document due to factors such as low print contrast, defocusing, skew, etc. In this paper, we are proposing two algorithms for the extraction of primitives with good performance under degradation. The application of the algorithms is restricted to line drawings composed of horizontal and vertical lines. The performance of the algorithms has been evaluated by using a protocol described in the literature.

Notes: Abstract A typical paper based document consists of regions of text, graphics, and halftone images. Developing algorithms for automating the input of such documents is the goal of this research. The scope of this paper is the design of algorithms to process raster oriented binary images of paper based graphics to obtain vector oriented description files. The image is preprocessed to suppress noise and other digitization artifacts. The graphical components are then represented as a union of maximal squares using the maximal square moving algorithm. The pointers describing the connectivity of the maximal squares are analyzed to generate a linked list of squares. Straight line segments, curves, junctions, and large areas are then identified after extensive processing of this linked list. The output of the algorithm is a graphics description file which is then used as input to a graphics recognition system.

Notes: Abstract A computer-vision system to assist pilots during low-altitude flight has been developed in this research study. During this critical section of flight, a system that can detect various objects on the ground would be very useful both for enhancing the safety of navigation and for relieving pilots of a part of their workload in flight control. Such tasks can generally be automated by computer-vision-based methods, which provide the ability for object detection and tracking. This paper describes the algorithms developed for accomplishing such tasks. There are two main stages in the vision system. First, independently moving objects in the scene are detected and segmented from the background. Then, they are tracked from frame to frame, and their 3D motion parameters are recursively estimated with Kalman filtering techniques. Experiments using real-world image sequences have been carried out, and the results show that tracking moving objects is successful and the estimation of object's motion parameters are quite accurate.

Notes: Abstract. Converting paper-based engineering drawings into CAD model files is a tedious process. Therefore, automating the conversion of such drawings represents tremendous time and labor savings. We present a complete system which interprets such 2D paper-based engineering drawings, and outputs 3D models that can be displayed as wireframes. The system performs the detection of dimension sets, the extraction of object lines, and the assembly of 3D objects from the extracted object lines. A knowledge-based method is used to remove dimension sets and text from ANSI engineering drawings, a graphics recognition procedure is used to extract complete object lines, and an evidential rule-based method is utilized to identify view relationships. While these methods are the subject of several of our previous papers, this paper focuses on the 3D interpretation of the object. This is accomplished using a technique based on evidential reasoning and a wide range of rules and heuristics. The system is limited to the interpretation of objects composed of planar, spherical, and cylindrical surfaces. Experimental results are presented.

Notes: Abstract The structure of a novel compound,Iupac name: bicyclo [2.4.0]-octa-1,3-dimethyl-2,3-pentan-9-methylene-8, 10-butan-diolide, which resulted on treatment of photoparthenin with BF3-etherate acetic acid, has been established uniquely by X-ray crystallography. C15H18O4 is orthorhombic, space group P212121, with the cell dimensionsa=8.444(1),b=9.964(2),c=16.239(2) Å,V=1366.3(2) Å3,Z=4,M r =262.3,D o=1.29,D x=1.28 g cm−3, F(000)=560,T=293K,R=0.065 for 818 observed reflections. δ-lactone ring has a skew-boat, γ-lactone ring has an envelope, and the remaining six-membered ring has a distorted chair conformation. The four-membered ring is nonplanar. There are two intramolecular and one intermolecular short C-H⋯O interactions 2.819, 2.834, and 3.259 Å, respectively, which stabilize the crystal structure.
