Notes: Agriculture plays a major role in the economic and social development of Sudan. The most important agricultural area in Sudan is the irrigated Gezira Agricultural Scheme (GAS), which takes water from the Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile. This study investigated weed communities in relation to geographical location and crop rotation in 2000 and 2001. Five agricultural units were sampled from the central sector of the GAS; within each unit we surveyed weed communities in different phases of the crop rotation: cotton, groundnuts, sorghum, and a fallow. The distribution of weed species showed some similarities in the 2 years sampled, with most species being found in all agricultural units but their relative proportions differed. Broad-leaved weeds were dominant, suggesting that herbicides selected for weed control in the Gezira scheme need to be effective against this group of species. Agricultural unit and crop type affected weed communities in both years. The weed flora was largest in cotton, intermediate in groundnuts and sorghum, and smallest in the fallow. Although most weeds were found in all agricultural units; however, their relative abundances differed greatly, either as a result of differences in management between the units, or some other spatial effect. As such, weed control programmes need to be tailored at the agricultural unit scale.

Notes: New types of a-Si:H p-i-n diodes, capable of sustaining high reverse electric fields up to 6×105 V/cm with very low leakage currents, have been designed specifically for charged particle detection. Because of the low hole mobility and lifetime in this type of material, very high applied fields are required to collect a large fraction of the charge carriers generated by an ionizing particle. Since the leakage current is shown to be essentially due to electron tunneling through the p-doped layer, the new design includes a thicker p layer (300 nm) at the expense of an increased surface leakage current. An appropriate etching of the top doped layer around the electrode is then required to eliminate such currents. A model, taking into account the doped layer conductivities, is presented to roughly compare the reverse current-voltage characteristics of the samples before and after etching.

Notes: Bulk growth of the III–V diluted magnetic semiconductor, Ga1−xFexSb is reported for different iron concentrations. Room-temperature optical absorption coefficient measurements were performed. The dependence of the band gap Eg on the Fe concentration was studied. The band gap decreased with increasing x, and the variation was observed to follow a nonlinear trend. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements at 18 K were also carried out. The PL spectra showed a clear peak shift due to incorporation of Fe in the lattice, thus agreeing with the optical absorption results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present measurements of ballistic magnetoresistance in nanocontacts grown by electrodeposition of Ni microclusters on magnetic thin films covered by aluminum oxide layers, using a technique proposed by Schad et al. [D. Allen, R. Schad, G. Zangari, I. Zana, D. Yang, M. C. Tondra, and D. Wang, J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A. 18, 1830 (2000); Appl. Phys. Lett. 76, 407 (2000); D. Allen, R. Schad, G. Zangari, I. Zana, D. Yang, M. C. Tondra, D. Wang, and D. Reed, J. Appl. Phys. 89, 6662 (2001)]. The measurements are made on single Ni clusters in contact with a Ni and Co thin film. We measure the magnetoresistance and observe the relaxation of the magnetization and electrical resistance as a function of time. The clusters are electrodeposited under several different experimental conditions. Some are deposited randomly on an unpatterned film and some through various patterned photoresists that control the location at which the cluster is grown. The typical contact size is estimated from the electrical resistance to be 10–30 nm. Ballistic magnetoresistance values up to 14% are obtained in these first experiments. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
