Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit enthält allgemeine analytische Herleitung und eine übersichtliche Zusammenstellung vieler Ergebnisse für zeitabhängige Wärmeleitung in thermisch gekoppelten kugelförmigen Räumen.
Notes: Abstract A comprehensive study encompassing a general analytical development and an archival presentation of results is made for transient heat conduction in thermally coupled spherical regions. The system consists of a sphere and its surrounding environment, each region having different thermal properties and different initial temperatures. The general closed form solution, which accommodates an arbitrary inital temperature distribution in the sphere, is specialized to apply to a number of interesting problems. Among these, the situation in which the sphere and the surroundings are initially at different uniform temperatures constitutes a basic problem in the theory of heat conduction. Correspondingly, a comprehensive presentation of transient temperature histories is made for various locations in the sphere and in the surroundings, with relevant thermal property ratios serving as parameters. Characteristics such as the duration of the transient period and the penetration depth of the temperature field into the surroundings are illuminated. Another interesting situation is that in which the thermal conductivity of the sphere is much greater than that of the surroundings, so that the sphere temperature may be regarded as being spatially uniform. In addition to a presentation of temperature histories, the conditions are identified under which the assumed spatial uniformity of the sphere temperature is valid. For the case of a metallic sphere situated in a gaseous environment, it is demonstrated that the transient response can be represented by a single universal curve.

Notes: Abstract Using Hill's modified stability criterion in the three-dimensional restricted three-body problem with the Sun and Jupiter as the primaries, regions of stability for the semi-major axis (a) are determined. These regions are given for a range of eccentricity (e) and inc.l.ination (i), and include the effects of the remaining orbital elements. This generalizes Szebehely's previous results which only examined the effects of e and i on the regions of stability for the semima jor axis. It is shown that if the other orbital elements are also considered, the previous results are sharpened but are not contradicted.

Notes: Abstract For differential equations with one fast variable, a perturbation method is introduced that transforms a solution valid over only a short time interval to a new solution composed of averaged variables plus a periodic function of the averaged variables. The averaged variables are governed by a set of differential equations where the fast variable has been removed and thus can be numerically integrated quickly or solved directly. This method is applied to a perturbed harmonic oscillator with a cubic perturbation, van der Pol's equation, coorbital motion in the restricted three-body problem, and to nearly circular motion of a particle near one of the primaries in the restricted three-body problem.

Description: A partially differentiated interior for (1) Ceres deduced from its gravity field and shape Nature 537, 7621 (2016). doi:10.1038/nature18955 Authors: R. S. Park, A. S. Konopliv, B. G. Bills, N. Rambaux, J. C. Castillo-Rogez, C. A. Raymond, A. T. Vaughan, A. I. Ermakov, M. T. Zuber, R. R. Fu, M. J. Toplis, C. T. Russell, A. Nathues & F. Preusker Remote observations of the asteroid (1) Ceres from ground- and space-based telescopes have provided its approximate density and shape, leading to a range of models for the interior of Ceres, from homogeneous to fully differentiated. A previously missing parameter that can place a strong constraint on the interior of Ceres is its moment of inertia, which requires the measurement of its gravitational variation together with either precession rate or a validated assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. However, Earth-based remote observations cannot measure gravity variations and the magnitude of the precession rate is too small to be detected. Here we report gravity and shape measurements of Ceres obtained from the Dawn spacecraft, showing that it is in hydrostatic equilibrium with its inferred normalized mean moment of inertia of 0.37. These data show that Ceres is a partially differentiated body, with a rocky core overlaid by a volatile-rich shell, as predicted in some studies. Furthermore, we show that the gravity signal is strongly suppressed compared to that predicted by the topographic variation. This indicates that Ceres is isostatically compensated, such that topographic highs are supported by displacement of a denser interior. In contrast to the asteroid (4) Vesta, this strong compensation points to the presence of a lower-viscosity layer at depth, probably reflecting a thermal rather than compositional gradient. To further investigate the interior structure, we assume a two-layer model for the interior of Ceres with a core density of 2,460–2,900 kilograms per cubic metre (that is, composed of CI and CM chondrites), which yields an outer-shell thickness of 70–190 kilometres. The density of this outer shell is 1,680–1,950 kilograms per cubic metre, indicating a mixture of volatiles and denser materials such as silicates and salts. Although the gravity and shape data confirm that the interior of Ceres evolved thermally, its partially differentiated interior indicates an evolution more complex than has been envisioned for mid-sized (less than 1,000 kilometres across) ice-rich rocky bodies.

Description: Observations from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission indicate a marked change in the gravitational signature of lunar impact structures at the morphological transition, with increasing diameter, from complex craters to peak-ring basins. At crater diameters larger than ~200 km, a central positive Bouguer anomaly is seen within the innermost peak ring, and an annular negative Bouguer anomaly extends outward from this ring to the outer topographic rim crest. These observations demonstrate that basin-forming impacts remove crustal materials from within the peak ring and thicken the crust between the peak ring and the outer rim crest. A correlation between the diameter of the central Bouguer gravity high and the outer topographic ring diameter for well-preserved basins enables the identification and characterization of basins for which topographic signatures have been obscured by superposed cratering and volcanism. The GRAIL inventory of lunar basins improves upon earlier lists that differed in their totals by more than a factor of 2. The size-frequency distributions of basins on the nearside and farside hemispheres of the Moon differ substantially; the nearside hosts more basins larger than 350 km in diameter, whereas the farside has more smaller basins. Hemispherical differences in target properties, including temperature and porosity, are likely to have contributed to these different distributions. Better understanding of the factors that control basin size will help to constrain models of the original impactor population.
