    Description: Current methods to evaluate the potential risk of earthen dam and levee failures by internal erosion fail to consider appropriate failure criteria for the initiation, continuation, and progression phases and are often based on subjective assessment. Six different internal erosion failure modes may occur within a dam or levee, its abutments, or the foundation that are triggered or facilitated by different mechanisms and therefore have different failure criteria. In non-cohesive soils, suffusion, backward erosion, heave, or concentrated leak erosion (scour) are possible, although the physical mechanisms driving the failure criterion for each of these are very different. Currently, no credible failure criteria exist for evaluation of the initiation of backward erosion. This article presents derivation of a specific failure criterion for initiation of backward erosion in non-cohesive soils using the critical kinetic energy ( E kcrit ) of initiation. Laboratory experiments conducted with different soils showed that E kcrit is affected by the physical characteristics of the soil, effective stress conditions, and angle of the seepage path. In internally stable, non-cohesive soils (e.g., uniform medium sands) with up to 6 percent non-plastic fines, backward erosion initiated when the E kcrit of seepage exceeded 0.075 Joules. In non-cohesive soils with 10 percent non-plastic fines, which are also prone to suffusion, the E kcrit for backward erosion is reduced by a factor of as much as 100. Moreover, in soil with 20 percent plastic fines, initiation of backward erosion did not occur. Concentrated leak erosion along hydraulic-induced fractures was the dominant process of internal erosion in soils with plastic fines. A new backward erosion assessment methodology based on the factor of safety is proposed for initiation of backward erosion that relates the laboratory-derived E kcrit and the anticipated maximum actual kinetic energy, as measured in the field or estimated during design. The advantage of this method is that laboratory-derived E kcrit can take into account the natural factors that affect initiation of backward erosion. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the factor of safety methodology under typical field conditions.

    Description: The principles of natural protein engineering are obscured by overlapping functions and complexity accumulated through natural selection and evolution. Completely artificial proteins offer a clean slate on which to define and test these protein engineering principles, while recreating and extending natural functions. Here we introduce this method with the design of an oxygen transport protein, akin to human neuroglobin. Beginning with a simple and unnatural helix-forming sequence with just three different amino acids, we assembled a four-helix bundle, positioned histidines to bis-histidine ligate haems, and exploited helical rotation and glutamate burial on haem binding to introduce distal histidine strain and facilitate O(2) binding. For stable oxygen binding without haem oxidation, water is excluded by simple packing of the protein interior and loops that reduce helical-interface mobility.     Description: In the present work, structural analysis of 5.77m × 4m woven jute (J)/glass (G) fibre-reinforced polyester hybrid composite solar parabolic trough is carried out based on trough parameters to obtain the minimum RMS local slope deviation, termed as SDx value under gravity loading. The optimization is done by varying parameters viz. direction and size of reinforced conduits, stacking number and sequence of hybrid trough laminate at fibre orientation of Δθ=45° and Δθ=60° amongst the layers at 0° collector angle. The analysis revealed that the configuration in which the conduits are placed in both X and Y directions is preferred over other configurations to scale down the effect of wind loads.     Description: The paper presents a novel densely packed assembly for high concentrating photovoltaic applications, designed to fit 125x primary and 4x secondary reflective optics. This assembly can accommodate 144 multijunction cells and is one of the most populated modules presented so far. Based on the thermal simulation results, an aluminum-based insulated metal substrate has been used as baseplate; this technology is commonly exploited for Light Emitting Diode applications, due to its optimal thermal management. The original outline of the conductive copper layer has been developed to minimize Joule losses by reducing the number of interconnections among the cells in series. Oversized Schottky diodes have been employed for bypassing purposes. The whole design fits the IPC-2221 requirements. The plate has been manufactured using standard electronic processes and then characterized through an indoor test and the results are here presented and commented on. The assembly achieves a fill factor above 80% and an efficiency of 29.4% at 500x, less than 2% lower than that of a single cell commercial receiver. The novel design of the conductive pattern is conceived to decrease the power losses and the deployment of an insulated metal substrate represents an improvement towards the awaited cost-cutting for high concentrating photovoltaic technologies.

    Notes: Abstract  The fluoride content of dung, urine and milk of grazing animals, for example cow, she-buffalo, doe and ewe, was studied in the Podili area, India, (endemic fluorosis) and also in Tirupati (non-fluorosis) for the purpose of comparison. The data reveal that the fluoride content of the urine of animals is suitable for the preparation of biogeochemical atlases studying the environmental effect in relation to health.

    Notes: Moderate levels of N were toxic to the native Australian plant boronia (Boronia megastigma Nees). As NO-3 is the major N form available for plants under cultivated conditions, NO-3 reduction and accumulation patterns in boronia were examined following the supply of various levels of NO-3 to understand the physiological basis of this toxicity. At a low level of supplied NO-3 [15 mmol (plant)-1], NO-3 was reduced without any detectable accumulation and without nitrate reductase activity (NRA) reaching its maximum capacity. When higher NO-3 levels [≥25 mmol (plant)-1] were supplied, both NRA and NO-3 accumulation increased further. However, NRA increased to a maximum of ca 500 nmol NO-3 (g fresh weight)-1 h-1, both in the roots and leaves, irrespective of a 4-fold difference in the levels of supplied NO-3, whereas NO-3 continued to accumulate in proportion to the level of supplied NO-3. Chlorotic toxicity symptoms appeared on the leaves at an accumulation of ca 32 μmol NO-3 (g fresh weight)-1. High endogenous NO-3 concentrations inhibited NRA. The low level of NRA in boronia was not limited by NO-3 or electron donor availability. It is concluded that the low NR enzyme activity is a genetic adaptation to the low NO-3 availability in the native soils of boronia. Thus, when NO-3 supply is high, the plat cannot reduce it at high rates, leading to large and toxic accumulations of the ion in the leaf tissues.
