    Description: The process and mechanisms of secondary hydrocarbon migration in the Tazhong uplift, Tarim Basin, were investigated based on the analysis of the regional structure and by integrating geologic, hydrodynamic, and geochemical parameters. Parameters successfully analyzed included the fluid potential, fluid properties, production outputs, and diamantane index. The results indicated that hydrocarbons migrated into the Tazhong uplift from the northern part of the Manjiaer depression through a series of injection points (IPs) during four orogenies, that is, the early Caledonian (510 Ma), the late Caledonian (439 Ma), the late Hercynian–Indosinian (290 Ma), and the Yanshanian–Himalayan (208 Ma). A total of six IPs were identified at the intersections of the northeast-trending faults and the northwest-trending flower strike faults. The hydrocarbons migrated from the IPs into traps along regional trends from northwest to southeast and from northeast to southwest. The hydrocarbon migration process and patterns determined the distribution of hydrocarbon properties and production rates in the Tazhong uplift. With increasing distance from the IPs, daily hydrocarbon production decreases, and the hydrocarbons become progressively heavier and display lower gas:oil ratios.

    Description: Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered to be one of the most important energy storage technologies. As the energy density of batteries increases, battery safety becomes even more critical if the energy is released unintentionally. Accidents related to fires and explosions of LIBs occur frequently worldwide. Some have caused serious threats to human life and health and have led to numerous product recalls by manufacturers. These incidents are reminders that safety is a prerequisite for batteries, and serious issues need to be resolved before the future application of high-energy battery systems. This Review aims to summarize the fundamentals of the origins of LIB safety issues and highlight recent key progress in materials design to improve LIB safety. We anticipate that this Review will inspire further improvement in battery safety, especially for emerging LIBs with high-energy density.

    Description: Motivation: Reconstruction of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is of utmost interest to biologists and is vital for understanding the complex regulatory mechanisms within the cell. Despite various methods developed for reconstruction of GRNs from gene expression profiles, they are notorious for high false positive rate owing to the noise inherited in the data, especially for the dataset with a large number of genes but a small number of samples. Results: In this work, we present a novel method, namely NARROMI, to improve the accuracy of GRN inference by combining ordinary differential equation-based recursive optimization (RO) and information theory-based mutual information (MI). In the proposed algorithm, the noisy regulations with low pairwise correlations are first removed by using MI, and the redundant regulations from indirect regulators are further excluded by RO to improve the accuracy of inferred GRNs. In particular, the RO step can help to determine regulatory directions without prior knowledge of regulators. The results on benchmark datasets from Dialogue for Reverse Engineering Assessments and Methods challenge and experimentally determined GRN of Escherichia coli show that NARROMI significantly outperforms other popular methods in terms of false positive rates and accuracy.     Description: Abstract Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have long been considered to be a significant loss mechanism for relativistic electrons. This has most often been attributed to resonant interactions with the highest amplitude waves. But recent observations have suggested that the dominant energy of electrons precipitated to the atmosphere may often be relatively low, less than 1 MeV, whereas the minimum resonant energy of the highest amplitude waves is often greater than 2 MeV. Here we use relativistic electron test particle simulations in the wavefields of a hybrid code simulation of EMIC waves in dipole geometry in order to show that significant pitch angle scattering can occur due to interaction with low‐amplitude short‐wavelength EMIC waves. In the case we examined, these waves are in the H band (at frequencies above the He+ gyrofrequency), even though the highest amplitude waves were in the He band frequency range (below the He+ gyrofrequency). We also present wave power distributions for 29 EMIC simulations in straight magnetic field line geometry that show that the high wave number portion of the spectrum is in every case mostly due to the H band waves. Though He band waves are often associated with relativistic electron precipitation, it is possible that the He band waves do not directly scatter the sub‐megaelectron volts (sub‐MeV) electrons, but that the presence of He band waves is associated with high plasma density which lowers the minimum resonant energy so that these electrons can more easily resonate with the H band waves.

    Description: Although the energy densities of batteries continue to increase, safety problems (for example, fires and explosions) associated with the use of highly flammable liquid organic electrolytes remain a big issue, significantly hindering further practical applications of the next generation of high-energy batteries. We have fabricated a novel "smart" nonwoven electrospun separator with thermal-triggered flame-retardant properties for lithium-ion batteries. The encapsulation of a flame retardant inside a protective polymer shell has prevented direct dissolution of the retardant agent into the electrolyte, which would otherwise have negative effects on battery performance. During thermal runaway of the lithium-ion battery, the protective polymer shell would melt, triggered by the increased temperature, and the flame retardant would be released, thus effectively suppressing the combustion of the highly flammable electrolytes.

    Description: Being situated in the immediate vicinity of the 1999 Chichi earthquake epicenter, 178 automatic-recording monitoring wells of the Choshui fan-delta provided a very valuable data set for testing whether the coseismic water-level changes in confined aquifers can be explained as a poroelastic response of well-aquifer systems to coseismic volumetric strain. This study demonstrates that the polarities of the observed coseismic water-level and river discharge changes are in good agreement with those of the static volumetric strain calculated by a dislocation model, using the well-constrained rupture model of the seismogenic Chelungpu fault. The puzzling "bull-eye" patterns formed by the equipotential lines of the coseismic water-level changes in the confined aquifers in the middle parts of the fan-delta represent pressure enhancement due to their being situated at the pinch-out ends of conglomeratic layers.

    Description: Motivation: Loops in proteins are often involved in biochemical functions. Their irregularity and flexibility make experimental structure determination and computational modeling challenging. Most current loop modeling methods focus on modeling single loops. In protein structure prediction, multiple loops often need to be modeled simultaneously. As interactions among loops in spatial proximity can be rather complex, sampling the conformations of multiple interacting loops is a challenging task. Results: In this study, we report a new method called m ulti-loop Di stance-guided S equential chain- Gro wth Monte Carlo ( M -D i SG ro ) for prediction of the conformations of multiple interacting loops in proteins. Our method achieves an average RMSD of 1.93 Å for lowest energy conformations of 36 pairs of interacting protein loops with the total length ranging from 12 to 24 residues. We further constructed a data set containing proteins with 2, 3 and 4 interacting loops. For the most challenging target proteins with four loops, the average RMSD of the lowest energy conformations is 2.35 Å. Our method is also tested for predicting multiple loops in β-barrel membrane proteins. For outer-membrane protein G, the lowest energy conformation has a RMSD of 2.62 Å for the three extracellular interacting loops with a total length of 34 residues (12, 12 and 10 residues in each loop).
