    Description: A model of the lithospheric structure of the eastern sector of the Ebro basin has been obtained by means of an inversion of the receiver functions from teleseismic events recorded by one of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans stations located at the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. The technique consists of the isolation and modeling of the amplitude and travel time of the direct P teleseismic wave reverberations in a local structure and has been used for events recorded at Poblet station (POB, placed in the southeast margin of the basin) from 1994 to 1997. The analysis of POB records shows the influence of large-scale heterogeneities in the wave pulses coming from azimuths crossing the Catalan Coastal Ranges, whereas a simple medium response is obtained when teleseismic waves only sample the basin. The inversion of such simple receiver functions in terms of a flat layered media (2- to 3- km layer thicknesses), along with a comparison of the results with previous and independent works, enables us to obtain a crustal and upper mantle velocity structure for the Ebro basin. The preferred solution models show a strong near-surface velocity gradient, a nearly constant P velocity upper crust of about 5.9 km/sec, and a sharp velocity contrast at the crust-mantle boundary located at 32 km depth overlayed by a lower crust consisting of a significant positive velocity gradient. The upper mantle shows an average P velocity of about 8.0 km/sec.

    Description: Detailed knowledge of the physical properties of the sediments filling the Mississippi Embayment has proven critical to both unravel the tectonic frame-work operating in the region and assess the seismic hazards posed by the New Madrid Seismic Zone. In this article we show that independent geotechnical estimates for P-and S-wave velocities are compatible with a sedimentary model of K-feldspar clasts embeded in water, and we test its validity by modeling receiver functions at a number of broadband stations. By constraining the bulk sediment thicknesses beneath each station from independent reflection profiling estimates, we have been able to recover the depth to the top of the Cretaceous from the receiver function data at individual stations. Our receiver function modeling thus provides confidence in the velocity and density structures extrapolated from in situ geotechnical measurements in the Upper Mississippi Embayment.

    Description: We report full moment tensor solutions for 76 mine tremors with moment magnitudes (M (sub w) ) between 0.5 and 2.6 recorded by a network of 20 high-frequency geophones in a deep gold mine in South Africa. Source mechanisms convey important information on how in-mine stresses are relaxed, and understanding the nature of such mechanisms is essential for improving our assessment of rock mass response to mining. Our approach has consisted of minimizing the L2 norm of the difference between observed and predicted P, SV, and SH spectral amplitudes, with visually assigned polarities, to constrain all six independent components of the seismic moment tensor. Our results reveal the largest principal stresses in the mine are compressive, oriented near vertically, and relaxed through a mix of volumetric closure and normal faulting, consistent with a gravity-driven closure of the mined-out areas. Previous moment tensor studies in deep mines had suggested that the distribution of seismic sources in terms of the volumetric-shear mix was bimodal. A bimodal distribution is compatible with our moment tensor solutions only for moment magnitudes above 2.2. Events in the 0.5〈M (sub w) 〈2.2 moment magnitude range display a continuous distribution of their volumetric-shear mix.

    Description: Ambient seismic noise has traditionally been regarded as an unwanted perturbation that “contaminates” earthquake data. Over the last decade, however, it has been shown that consistent information about subsurface structure can be extracted from ambient seismic noise. By cross-correlation of noise simultaneously recorded at two seismic stations, the empirical Green’s function for the propagating medium between them can be reconstructed. Moreover, for periods less than 30 s the seismic spectrum of ambient noise is dominated by microseismic energy and, because microseismic energy travels mostly as surface-waves, the reconstruction of the empirical Green’s function is usually proportional to the surface-wave portion of the seismic wavefield. In this paper, we present 333 empirical Green’s functions obtained from stacked cross-correlations of one month of vertical component ambient seismic noise for different pairs of seismic stations in the Borborema Province of NE Brazil. The empirical Green’s functions show that the signal obtained is dominated by Rayleigh waves and that dispersion velocities can be measured reliably for periods between 5 and 20 s. The study includes permanent stations from a monitoring seismic network and temporary stations from past passive experiments in the region, resulting in a combined network of 34 stations separated by distances between approximately 40 and 1,287 km. Fundamental-mode group velocities were obtained for all station pairs and then tomographically inverted to produce maps of group velocity variation. For short periods (5–10 s) the tomographic maps correlate well with surface geology, with slow velocities delineating the main rift basins (Potiguar, Tucano, and Recôncavo) and fast velocities delineating the location of the Precambrian São Francisco craton and the Rio Grande do Norte domain. For longer periods (15–20 s) most of the velocity anomalies fade away, and only those associated with the deep Tucano basin and the São Francisco craton remain. The fading of the Rio Grande do Norte domain fast-velocity anomaly suggests this is a supracrustal structure rather than a lithospheric terrain, and places new constraints on the Precambrian evolution of the Borborema Province. ©2014 Springer Basel

    Description: During the TopoIberia experiment, a total of 26 seismic broadband stations were recording in northern Morocco, providing for the first time extended regional coverage for investigating structure and seismotectonics of the southern branch of the Betic-Rif arc, its foreland, and the Atlas domain. Here, we analyze P-to-S converted waves in teleseismic receiver functions to infer gross crustal properties as thickness and Vp/Vs ratio. Strong lateral variations of the crustal thickness are observed throughout the region. Crustal thicknesses vary between 22 and 44 km and display a simple geographic pattern that divides the study area into three domains: entire northwestern Morocco underlain by a thickened crust with crustal thicknesses between 35 and 44 km; northeastern Morocco affected by significant crustal thinning, with crustal thicknesses ranging from 22 to 30 km, with the shallowest Moho along the Mediterranean coast; and an extended domain of 27–34 km thick crust, farther south which includes the Atlas domain and its foreland regions. Vp/Vs ratios show normal values of ∼1.75 for most stations except for the Atlas domain, where several stations give low Vp/Vs ratios of around 1.71. The very sharp transition from thick crust in northwestern Morocco to thin crust in northeastern Morocco is attributed to regional geodynamics, possibly the realm of present-day subcrustal dynamics in the final stage of western Mediterranean subduction. Crustal thicknesses just slightly above 30 km in the southern domain are intriguing, showing that high topography in this region is not isostatically compensated at crustal level.

    Description: New maps of S velocity variation for the upper and middle crust making up the northwestern most corner of South America have been developed from cross correlation of ambient seismic noise at 52 broadband stations in the region. Over 1,300 empirical Green's functions, reconstructing the Rayleigh wave portion of the seismic wavefield, were obtained after time and frequency-domain normalization of the ambient noise recordings and stacking of 48 months of normalized data. Interstation phase and group velocity curves were then measured in the 6–38 s period range and tomographically inverted to produce maps of phase and group velocity variation in a 0.5° × 0.5° grid. Velocity-depth profiles were developed for each node after simultaneously inverting phase and group velocity curves and combined to produce 3-D maps of S velocity variation for the region. The S velocity models reveal a ~7 km thick sedimentary cover in the Caribbean region, the Magdalena Valley, and the Cordillera Oriental, as well as crustal thicknesses in the Pacific and Caribbean region under ~35 km, consistent with previous studies. They also display zones of slow velocity at 25–35 km depth under regions of both active and inactive volcanism, suggesting the presence of melts that carry the signature of segmented subduction into the overriding plate. A low-velocity zone in the same depth range is imaged under the Lower Magdalena Basin in the Caribbean region, which may represent either sublithospheric melts ponding at midcrustal levels after breaching through a fractured Caribbean flat slab or fluid migration through major faults within the Caribbean crust. ©2018.
