    Notes: Abstract Pumiceous pyroclastic products are present as flows and falls at several stages of the evolution of the southern Guadeloupe volcanic island. An understanding of this volcanism had to rely on detailed petrochemical data of these products to complement similar data for effusive rocks so as to yield complete stratigraphical coverage. On the other hand most pumiceous rocks are more or less conspicuousily banded suggesting that mixing phenomena occurred to different degrees in their genesis. Three major classes of pumiceous products are found: (1) the Axial Chain deposits (2.0–0.5 My) are characterized by An90, 75-55 + En55 + Wo42En37 + Usp35-37 ± Fo68 ± Hble, SiO2 60%, SiO2/Th 35.6, and La/Th 3.9. Banded samples have components that differ in evolution indices by about 50%; (2) the Bouillante Chaine pyroclastics (0.3–0.1 My) consist of scattered deposits with variable mineralogical and geochemical compositions that seem to have erupted from a number of small eruptive centers. Qz-dacitic pumice is common with An90, 70-45 + En66-56 + Usp32-38 + Ilm94 + Hble ± Wo40-42En40-42, SiO2 62%, SiO2/Th 22.9, and La/Th 〉4. Mixed pumice samples have highly contrasted evolution indices differing by up to 120%; (3) the Pintade pumice flows and falls correspond to the major pyroclastic event (approx. 10 km3) in the southern Basse Terre area. They are characterized by An85-70 + En66-56 + Usp32-37 ± Wo42En42, SiO2/Th 18.7-22?6, and La/Th 3.0-4.0. Banded pumice lumps are scarce and show slight compositional contrasts; differences in evolution indices do not exceed 38%. Axial and Bouillante chain pyroclastics and Grande Découverte volcano pumice respectively, form two different families in trace element plots. Minor elements in pyroxenes also are distinctive. These trends are similar to those obtained for effusive rocks and define comagmatic series. Major and trace element data for the separated components of inhomogeneous pumice in each formation always plot in the corresponding series. These chemical discriminants can be used to attribute samples of unknown provenance to a given volcanic ensemble. An inverse relationship between differences in evolution indices in inhomegeneous pumice and the volume of any single eruptive sequence is noted. This is an indication that pumiceous pyroclastic rocks were erupted from a zoned magma chamber. We favor an interpretation where zonation is produced by influx of less envolved magma in superficial differentiated chambers which is a direct cause for eruption.

    Notes: Abstract An extensive set of samples representative of the evolution of Etna since the beginning of its activity in the Quaternary has been analyzed for trace element contents by neutron activation on whole rock samples. Major element data were taken fromTanguy (1980). Several petrogenetic processes have played a role in the observed chemical variations: binary trace element plots form linear arrays extrapolating to the origin for most second row and higher transition elements and the rare alkali metals thus indicating their hygromagmaphile (HYG) character; 3d transition elements show two types of behavior when plotted against an HYG element. Concentrations remain relatively constant for the less evolved rocks in the range from tholeiite through transitional basalts to alkali basalts. On the contrary, concentrations drop rapidly in the series evolving from alkali basalts to trachytes; in addition to the latter two general trends, geochemical regularities specific to Etnean lavas are born out. Rare alkali metals, as well as potassium, for instance, show a trend of abnormal enrichment in the most recent historical eruptions. The recurrence in time of rather primary magmas indicates that the petrogenetic evolution of the lavas cannot be explained by the differentiation of a single batch of mantle derived magma. However, the chemical composition of the mantle source has remained relatively homogeneous with a nature very near the chondritic one. Mineralogically, the source must differ from that for oceanic basalts to account for Th/Ta differences. Early tholeiitic primary magma evolving into later alkali basalts is adequately modeled by variations of the degree of partial melting of a closed system source. Highly evolved products have episodically been emitted as a result of extensive crystal fractionation, during which no basalts are erupted. These episodes are abruptly interrupted by the eruption of basalts presumably indicating recharge of the magma plumbing system by pristine mantle derived material. Selective contamination in alkali elements from the sedimentary basement is also indicated by the data. The presence of partially digested sedimentary xenoliths is an additional argument for this process.

    Notes: Abstract The magmatic system feeding the last eruption of the volcano La Fossa, Vulcano Island, Italy was studied. The petrogenetic mechanisms controlling the differentiation of erupted rocks were investigated through petrography, mineral chemistry, major, trace and rare earth element and Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic geochemistry. In addition, melt inclusion and fluid inclusion data were collected on both juvenile material and xenolithic partially melted metamorphic clasts to quantify the P–T conditions of the magma chamber feeding the eruption. A regular and continuous chemical zoning has been highlighted: rhyolites are the first erupted products, followed by trachytes and latites, whereas rhyolitic compositions were also found in the upper part of the sequence. The chemical and isotopic composition of the rhyolites indicates that they originated by fractional crystallization from latitic magmas plus the assimilation of crustal material; the trachytes represent hybrid magmas resulting from the mixing of latites and rhyolites, contaminated in the shallow magmatic system. The erupted products, primarily compositionally zoned from latites to rhyolites, are heterogeneous due to syn-eruptive mingling. The occurrence of magma–crust interaction processes, evidenced by isotopic variations (87Sr/86Sr = 0.70474±3 to 0.70511±3;143Nd/144Nd = 0.512550±6 to 0.512614±8;206Pb/204Pb = 19.318–19.489;207Pb/204Pb=15.642–15.782;208Pb/204Pb = 39.175–39.613), is confirmed by the presence of partially melted metamorphic xenoliths, with 87Sr/86Sr = 0.71633±6 to 0.72505±2 and 143Nd/144Nd = 0.51229±7, in rhyolites and trachytes. AFC calculations indicate a few percentage contribution of crustal material to the differentiating magmas. Thermometric measurements on melt inclusions indicate that the crystallization temperatures of the latites and trachytes were in the range of 1050–1100°  C, whereas the temperature of the rhyolites appears to have been around 1000°  C at the time of the eruption. Compositional data on melt inclusions reveal that the magmas involved in the eruption contained about 1–1.5 wt.% dissolved H2O in pre-eruptive conditions. Secondary fluid inclusions found in metamorphic xenoliths give low equilibration pressure data (30–60 MPa), giving the location of the higher portions of the chamber at around 1500–2000 m of depth.

    Notes: In the W Hoggar (Algeria), the major transcurrent N–S East Ouzzal shear zone (EOSZ) hosts several world-class gold deposits over a 100-km length. The late Pan-African EOSZ separates two contrasting Precambrian domains: the Archaean In Ouzzal block to the west (orthogneisses with subordinate metasediments, reworked and granulitized in the c. 2 Ga Eburnean event) and a Middle Proterozoic block to the east (again orthogneisses and metasediments, involved in the c. 600 Ma Pan-African event).The EOSZ is a mylonite belt, 1–3 km wide, with a 50-m-wide ultramylonite belt hosting numerous quartz veins and lenses (giant hydrothermal quartz system) associated with a quartz-sericite-pyrite-carbonate (beresite) alteration. These hydrothermal events occurred under ductile (evolving towards brittle) conditions, between 500 and 300 MPa, at 500–300°C, with aqueous-carbonic fluids derived both from underlying devolatilized metamorphic rocks and a mantle source, as recorded by stable (C, O) isotope data. No gold mineralization was associated with these typical mesothermal events.Following a pressure drop (to 130 MPa), related to the inception of extensional tectonics, the EOSZ was later percolated by a new set of hydrothermal fluids, evolved from basinal waters that deeply penetrated into the In Ouzzal basement. These fluids were Ca-bearing brines (up to 25% wt. eq. NaCl), characterized by high δD (-9 to + 18‰ range), mobilized by the thermal energy released by the late Pan-African granite magmatism (Taourirt granites).As demonstrated by Pb isotope data, the brines leached Au from the In Ouzzal granulites (which contain 3 ppb Au). Fluid inclusion studies indicate that gold was deposited from these brines in the EOSZ at a depth of c. 5 km, due to mixing and cooling with descending diluted fluids.
