Notes: Abstract  CuSO4-treated plaster blocks were used to create localised concentrations of copper significantly above ambient levels. Between October 1996 and March 1997 we used this system to manipulate the timing and frequency of transient copper-pollution events close to settlement plates. We assessed the impacts on the development of assemblages of sessile marine invertebrates that occur on hard substrates at Breakwater Pier in Williamstown, Victoria, Australia. Barnacle densities were reduced by up to one-third, while serpulid polychaetes were insensitive. Assemblages at different stages of development were differentially sensitive to short-term pulses. Reductions in sponge and scyphozoan polyp densities were greatest (50%) when pulse-pollution events occurred at times of high settlement. If a pulse copper-pollution event occurred in the first week of substrate becoming available for colonisation, then it had few observable impacts on recruitment for all invertebrates examined. When the first pulse occurred in the first week of the experiment there was no difference between the impacts of single or double-pulse exposures to the toxicant.

Notes: The cause of the unusual spectral distribution, often observed in InGaAs/GaAs quantum-dot lasers, is investigated by analyzing the spectra from devices fabricated with different substrate thickness (100–400 μm). Using a Fourier transform analysis to determine the optical path length, it is found that the measured modulation period correlates with the device thickness. Such a result provides evidence for spectral modulation mediated by the device structure rather than the quantum-dot material itself and is consistent with the idea that the modulation is due to a mode propagating in the transparent substrate. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] The horizontal disparity produced by a fixed extent in depth varies roughly inversely with the square of the viewing distance. For a fixed depth to be perceived as invariant (depth constancy), an accurate estimate of viewing distance is required. Viewing distance can in principle be calculated from ...

Notes: Packed columns are being considered for contacting liquid metals with molten salts to extract fission products from spent nuclear fuel. Extraction rates between a liquid cadmium alloy and a liquid chloride salt were measured at 530°C. in a prototype column. With a system of water and a low melting metal alloy, measurements of the pressure drop, limiting flow rates, and hold-up were made and compared with the predictions of existing correlations. These data indicate that packed columns might be effective contacting devices for pyrochemical processes.

Notes: Abstract A microprocessor-based instrument has been developed to assist in the processing of continuous flow analyser chart recordings. After the identification of peaks by an operator, the microcomputer applies baseline correction, performs a logarithmic transformation, scales according to prescribed standards and prints a final result. The instrument meets a processing need between the requirements of large computer-controlled systems and those of small analysers using manual methods of chart analysis. Economy is achieved by combining the peak identification skills of a human operator with the superior computational performance of the microprocessor. It has been found in the analysis of laboratory recordings that use of this instrument has resulted in a lower chart-processing error rate which is attributed to the reduction of operator tasks.

Notes: Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) hybrid networks have been prepared by the reaction of PDMS(OH)2, average molecular weight 26 × 103, 43.6 × 103 and 58 × 103, and methyltriethoxysilane (MeTEOS, 10-60 wt%) using a dibutyltin dilaurate or dibutyltin diacetate catalyst. By hydrolysis and homo- and co-condensation, MeTEOS forms a siliceous domain (MeSD) and acts as a crosslinker for the PDMS domain. Kinetic studies showed that high MeTEOS and catalyst concentrations and reduction of free surface area favor fast gelation and efficiency in converting MeTEOS to the MeSD. Under the water-sparse conditions utilized, cure was slow and substantial evaporative loss of MeTEOS occurred. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
