Notes: Abstract The theory of well-posedness in the generalized sense is developed for the linearized, time-dependent Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible flow, together with boundary conditions. This concept of well-posedness means existence and uniqueness of solutions together with an energy estimate where theL 2-norm is taken not only over the space variables, but also over the time. We prove that the existence of a unique solution of the Laplace-Fourier transformed problem, together with the corresponding energy estimate, implies well-posedness in the generalized sense. The Laplace-Fourier transform yields an ordinary differential equation for which the existence and uniqueness of solutions and the energy estimate is in general easy to show. This technique is therefore generally a considerable simplification of the investigation of well-posedness, and existence and uniqueness of solutions of the original problem can be proven for more general boundary conditions than if the classical concept of well-posedness is used. This is important when boundary conditions for open boundaries (inflow and outflow) are investigated, as one then typically wants to prescribe a high-order derivative of some of the dependent variables. We also show stability against perturbations with lower-order terms. This means that such terms can be omitted when investigating well-posedness in the generalized sense. All proofs are carried through in detail.

Notes: Abstract Cohesive properties are calculated for the AnIr2 and AnRh3 series of intermetallic systems. The positive and negative deviations from Vegard's law found in both series are emphasized. The development of magnetism and 5f localization as a function of increasing actinide atomic number is studied in detail for the two classes of compounds. A relativistic formulation of the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism is presented and applied to a number of actinide systems. Finally the ferromagnetism of UFe2, NpFe2 and PuFe2 is treated theoretically. For these intermetallic compounds it is found necessary to implement all three Hund's rules into the calculations, before agreement with experiment is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The time-dependent Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible fluid flow together with new boundary layer suppressing boundary conditions for open boundaries is investigated. In these new boundary conditions one typically prescribes a high-order derivative of some of the dependent variables. We prove that these boundary conditions give rise to a problem that is well posed in the generalized sense. This means that there exists a unique smooth solution of the linearized problem and that this solution can be estimated by data.

Notes: Abstract Small and sensitive silicon sensors for turbulent wall-pressure fluctuation measurements have been designed and fabricated using microelectronic technology. For the detection of the pressure fluctuations piezoresistive gauges are placed on a diaphragm and the resistance of these gauges depends on the stresses in the diaphragm. For the determination of the performance of these pressure transducers comparisons with conventional microphones were carried out in a well-defined two-dimensional boundary layer. Power spectra from the silicon pressure transducer revealed a slope in the inertial sublayer corresponding approximately to the 5/3-law of Kolmogorov, and the normalized wall pressure fluctuations agreed well with other direct measurements.

Notes: Abstract With the aim of establishing a relationship between the electronic structure and the site occupancy within the Cu-O chains, we perform total energy calculations for the sub-stoichiometric compound Yba 2 Cu 3 O 6.5 for various patterns of vacancy ordering. Supercells containing up to four formula units are considered. The effective interactions of O(1) atoms are extracted from the total energies by means of the cluster expansion technique. The most stable configuration is found to be the experimentally observed ortho-II structure. This finding is confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulations for a rigid lattice using the pair interactions. Thermal disorder effects are studied. The influence of vacancy ordering on the total and partial densities of states is discussed.

Notes: TiN films were grown on (100), (110), and (111) oriented MgO by reactive magnetron sputtering from a Ti target in mixed Ar/N2 discharges. During film growth at substrate temperatures Ts ranging from 450 to 900 °C, an applied negative substrate bias Vs (0≤Vs≤600 V) was used to vary the flux and energy of impinging Ar+ and N+2 ions. Electron channeling and transmission electron microscopy were used to show that films grown at Ts≥550 °C were epitaxial with a defect density that decreased with increasing Ts. At a constant Ts=700 °C, the films were found to remain epitaxial as Vs was increased from 0 to 200 V, but the crystalline quality clearly deteriorated with Vs=400 V and at Vs=600 V the films were polycrystalline. Energy dispersive x-ray analysis showed that the trapped Ar concentration CAr in the films was a function of both Vs and Ts. For Ts=700 °C, CAr increased with increasing Vs to reach a maximum CmaxAr at 400 V before decreasing again. The relative value of CmaxAr varied with orientation in the following manner: (110)〉(100)〉(111). At a constant Vs=400 V, CmaxAr for (110) oriented films occurred at Ts≈750 °C. These results are explained based upon ion channeling efficiency as a function of film orientation and defect structure.
