Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problems of a FEL amplifier with two-element circularly polarized and self-adaptive wiggler are discussed. In order to get the optimum amplifier, the relations between the characteristic quantities of the amplifier and the amplifier structure parameters are studied by computer simulation. The results show that the influence of the free-drift-space and two-interaction region structure on the gain of the amplifier is sensitive. The results are also compared with one-element wiggler.

Notes: Abstract When multicollinearity is present in a set of the regression variables, the least square estimate of the regression coefficient tends to be unstable and it may lead to erroneous inference. In this paper, generalized ridge estimate β(K) of the regression coefficient β =vec(B) is considered in multivaiate linear regression model. The MSE of the above estimate is less than the MSE of the least square estimate by choosing the ridge parameter matrix K. Moreover, it is pointed out that the Criterion MSE for choosing matrix K of generalized ridge estimate has several weaknesses. In order to overcome these weaknesses, a new family of criteria Q(c) is adpoted which includes the criterion MSE and criterion LS as its special case. The good properties of the criteria Q(c) are proved and discussed from theoretical point of view. The statistical meaning of the scale c is explained and the methods of determining c are also given.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this paper is to investigate, to some extent, the influnce of variational constraints on the finite element properties, which are based on different types of variational principles. Taking axisymmetrical elements of thin shell of revolution (abbreviated as TSR element) as comparative elements, and with the same geometrical description, we derive seven kinds of TSR hybrid elements and two kinds of TSR conforming elements corresponding to three types of hybrid variational principles and potential energy principle respectively. By analysing the element stiffness formulations and comparing the numerical calculations, such as corrugated shell, we discuss the differences in properties of different models, and the adaptability, limitation as well as relationship between two types of models. We also point out a devergence case of TSR hybrid displacement element, and suggest two kinds of more acceptable TSR elements.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, compression LS estimate $$\hat B\left( k \right)$$ of the regression coefficient B is considered when the design matrix present ill-condition in multivariate linear model. The MSE (mean square error) of the estimate $$\hat \beta \left( k \right) = Vec\left( {\hat B\left( k \right)} \right)$$ is less than the MSE of LS estimate β* of the regression coefficient β=Vec(B) by choosing the parameter k. Admissibility, numerical stability and relative efficiency of $$\hat B\left( k \right)$$ are proved. The method of determining k value for practical use is also suggested.

Notes: Abstract According to recent studies of the generalized variational principle by Professor Chien Weizang, the more generalized hybrid variational principle for finite element method is given, from which a new kind of the generalized hybrid element model is etablished. Using the thin plate bending element with varying thickness as an example, we compare various hybrid elements based on different generalized variational principles.

Description: This article outlines a new approach to rapidly estimate the damage to tall buildings immediately following a large earthquake. The preevent groundwork involves the creation of a database of structural responses to a suite of idealized ground‐motion waveforms. The postevent action involves (1) rapid generation of an earthquake source model, (2) near real‐time simulation of the earthquake using a regional spectral‐element model of the earth and computing synthetic seismograms at tall building sites, and (3) estimation of tall building response (and damage) by determining the best‐fitting idealized waveforms to the synthetically generated ground motion at the site and directly extracting structural response metrics from the database. Here, ground‐velocity waveforms are parameterized using sawtoothlike wave trains with a characteristic period (T), amplitude (peak ground velocity, PGV), and duration (number of cycles, N). The proof‐of‐concept is established using the case study of one tall building model. Nonlinear analyses are performed on the model subjected to the idealized wave trains, with T varying from 0.5 s to 6.0 s, PGV varying from 0.125  m/s, and N varying from 1 to 5. Databases of peak transient and residual interstory drift ratios (IDR), and permanent roof drift are created. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the rapid response approach by applying it to synthetic waveforms from a simulated 1857‐like magnitude 7.9 San Andreas earthquake. The peak IDR, a key measure of structural performance, is predicted well enough for emergency response decision making.

Description: The 2006 Mw 7.8 Java earthquake was a tsunami earthquake, exhibiting frequency-dependent seismic radiation along strike. High-frequency global back-projection results suggest two distinct rupture stages. The first stage lasted ~65 s with a rupture speed of ~1.2 km/s, while the second stage lasted from ~65 to 150 s with a rupture speed of ~2.7 km/s. High-frequency radiators resolved with back-projection during the second stage spatially correlate with splay fault traces mapped from residual free-air gravity anomalies. These splay faults also colocate with a major tsunami source associated with the earthquake inferred from tsunami first-crest back-propagation simulation. These correlations suggest that the splay faults may have been reactivated during the Java earthquake, as has been proposed for other tsunamigenic earthquakes, such as the 1944 Mw 8.1 Tonankai earthquake in the Nankai Trough.
