    Notes: Abstract A study on the separation of lithium isotope was carried out with a 1,16-dioxa-4,7,10,13- tetraazacyclooctadecane-4,7,10,13-tetramerrifield peptide resin [N4O2·4M]. The resin having N4O2 as an anchor group has a capacity of 3.8 meq/g. Upon column chromatography [0.15 cm (I.D)×29 cm (height)] using 0.01 M NH4Cl as an eluent, the single separation factor, α=1.038 was obtained by the Glueckauf theory from the elution curve and isotope ratios.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to reduce the sintering temperature of Ba[(Ni0.6Zn0.4)0.33Nb0.67]O3 ceramics by doping with Sb2O5 and B2O3. Phase formation and dielectric properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and the post resonator method (10 GHz), respectively. It was observed that an addition of 1 mol % Sb2O5 or 1 mol % B2O3 was very effective in reducing the sintering temperature from 1500 to 1300 °C. However, these samples showed a temperature coefficient of resonant frequency far from 0 ppm/°C. The two additions produced a temperature coefficients with opposite signs. The combination of the two dopants produced a temperature coefficient very close to 0 ppm/°C as well as a better quality factor.

    Notes: Abstract TheSchizosaccharomyces pombe rhp51 + gene encodes a recombinational repair protein that shares significant sequence identities with the bacterial RecA and theSaccharomyces cerevisiae RAD51 protein. Levels ofrhp51 + mRNA increase following several types of DNA damage or inhibition of DNA synthesis. Anrhp51::ura4 fusion gene was used to identify the cis-acting promoter elements involved in regulatingrhp51 + expression in response to DNA damage. Two elements, designated DRE1 and DRE2 (fordamage-responsiveelement), match a decamer consensus URS (upstream repressing sequence) found in the promoters of many other DNA repair and metabolism genes fromS. cerevisiae. However, our results show that DRE1 and DRE2 each function as a UAS (upstream activating sequence) rather than a URS and are also required for DNA-damage inducibility of the gene. A 20-bp fragment located downstream of both DRE1 and DRE2 is responsible for URS function. The DRE1 and DRE2 elements cross-competed for binding to two proteins of 45 and 59 kDa. DNase I footprint analysis suggests that DRE1 and DRE2 bind to the same DNA-binding proteins. These results suggest that the DRE-binding proteins may play an important role in the DNA-damage inducibility ofrhp51 + expression.

    Notes: Abstract The SNF2/SWI2 ATPase/helicase family comprises proteins from a variety of species, which serve a number of functions, such as transcriptional regulation, maintenance of chromosome stability during mitosis, and various types of DNA repair. Several proteins with unknown functions are also included in this family. The number of genes that belong to this family is rapidly expanding, which makes it easier to analyze the common biological functions of the family members. This study was designed to clone the SNF2/SWI2 helicase-related genes from the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe in the hope that this would help to elucidate the common functions of the proteins in this family. The hrp1 + (helicase-related gene from S. p ombe) gene was initially cloned by PCR amplification using degenerate primers based on conserved SNF2 motifs within the ERCC6 gene, which encodes a protein involved in DNA excision repair. The hrp1 + ORF codes for an 1373-amino acid polypeptide with a molecular mass of 159 kDa. Like other SNF2/SWI2 family proteins, the deduced amino acid sequence of Hrp1 contains DNA-dependent ATPase/7 helicase domains, as well as a chromodomain and a DNA-binding domain. This configuration is similar to that of mCHD1 (mouse chromo-ATPase/helicase-DNA-binding protein 1), suggesting that Hrp1 is a S. pombe homolog of mCHD1, which is thought to function in altering the chromatin structure to facilitate gene expression. Northern blot analysis showed that the hrp1 + gene produces a 4.6-kb transcript, which reaches its maximal level just before the cells enter the exponential growth phase, and then decreases gradually. DNA-damaging agents, such as MMS, MNNG and UV, decrease the rate of transcription of hrp1 +. Deletion of the hrp1 + gene resulted in accelerated cell growth. On the other hand, overexpression of Hrp1 caused a reduction in growth rate. These results indicate that hrp1 + may act as a negative regulator of cellular growth.

    Notes: The dielectric and viscoelastic relaxation behavior of linear low-density polyethylene has been investigated. All three usual relaxation regions occur; however, the α process is more dominant than in conventional low-density polyethylene made dielectrically active through the introduction of carbonyl groups. The observed behavior is very sensitive to orientation and morphology. There are significant differences between oriented samples (stretching or extrusion) and a single-crystal texture specimen. Effects are caused by dipolar orientation and dipolar immobilization, the relative importance of each effect varying with specimen preparation. Active dipolar groups are not carbonyls, or any common organic species, but appear to be due to chain ends having residual dipoles caused by the catalyst used in synthesis.

    Notes: The velocity fluctuation of sedimenting noncolloidal particles leads to the broadening of the interface region. In order to determine the sedimentation velocity fluctuation from the interface broadening quantitatively, the self-sharpening that reduces the broadening has to be considered simultaneously. If the velocity fluctuation effect is described by a diffusion process, the equation of mass conservation of sedimenting particles includes both of these two effects and the functional dependency of the diffusion coefficient on volume fraction is inferred from this equation. The application of the equation of mass conservation requires the volume fraction data as a function of both position and time, which is acquired by NMR-CT. The experimental results show that the interface broadening due to the velocity fluctuation is reduced substantially by the self-sharpening effect in the volume fraction range from 0.01 to 0.15. The dimensionless diffusion coefficient increases as volume fraction increases up to 0.04 where the diffusion coefficient reaches its maximum value, 22, and decreases slowly as volume fraction increases further up to 0.15.

    Notes: Abstract LiCoO2 has been synthesized by a solid-state synthesis route involving the decomposition and intercalation of hydroxide precursors generated by precipitation and freeze-drying. Cyclic voltammetry of LiCoO2 obtained by heating at 100°C for 2h has shown this material to be electrochemically active with an initial discharge capacity of 92mAhg−1. Optimization of processing conditions reduced the firing time to as little as 2h at 800°C, producing LiCoO2 powders with high reversible capacity (142mAhg−1), good rate capability, and good cyclability. The favourable performance of this oxide powder in LiCoO2/C lithium-ion cells using the present oxide powders shows the instant synthesis route to be promising and cost-effective for lithium-ion battery applications.

    Notes: Abstract Suspension cultures derived from Lycium chinense Miller seedlings produced significant amounts of a hepatoprotective cerebroside. Callus was induced from the stem of aseptic seedlings of L. chinense and maintained on MS solid media supplemented with 1.0 ppm 2,4-D and 0.1 ppm kinetin. Suspension cultures were established, and the cells were grown in the same liquid media in the dark. Lyophilized cells were extracted with a combined reagent of chloroform and methanol (2:1, v/v). An aqueous suspension of the evaporated cell extract was partitioned with chloroform, and the chloroform layer was subjected to silicic acid column chromatography followed by semi-preparative reverse phase C8 high pressure liquid chromatography. The purified compound showed hepatoprotective activity comparable to that shown by silymarin, and the structure was identified as 1-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-(2S,3R,4E,8Z)-2-N-2′-hydroxy-(palmitoyl)-4,8-sphingadiene on the basis of spectral data. The content of the compound in cultured cell was tenfold higher than that of the fruit of L. chinense. The biosynthesis of the compound in cultured cell systems appears to parallel cell growth.
