Notes: Summary Visual analogue scales were used in a pilot study to compare side-effects in patients receiving antihypertensive drugs either including or excluding β-blockers. Compared with symptom scores for patients receiving antihypertensive medication other than a β-blocker, symptom scores (when combined) for patients receiving a β-blocker were significantly higher for tired legs (p〈0.001), cold digits (p〈0.005), and vivid dreams (p〈0.01). These methods were also applied in a postal survey which was designed to compare the incidence of symptoms in patients receiving different β-blockers with symptoms in subjects receiving no drugs. When compared with symptom scores for subjects receiving no drugs, symptom scores (when combined) for patients receiving β-blockers were significantly higher for tired legs (p〈0.001), cold digits (p〈0.01), insomnia (p〈0.01), and lack of well-being (p〈0.01). These two studies were consistent in showing higher symptom scores for tired legs and cold digits in patients receiving β-blockers. However, there were inconsistencies regarding sleep disturbance. Increased dreaming was apparent in the pilot study whereas increased insomnia was apparent from the postal survey. These inconsistencies cannot be explained. No significant differences in side-effects were apparent between different β-blockers.

Notes: Abstract The isothermal oxidation resistance of high purity iron-manganese-aluminum alloys containing from 0 to 40% manganese and from 0 to 15% aluminum was investigated at 600, 800, and 1000°C in pure oxygen at a pressure of 200 torr for periods up to 100 hr. They were subsequently examined using SEM and metallographic techniques, and an oxide map showing the alloy structure and general oxidation behavior at 800°C was produced. Scales formed on alloys which contain insufficient aluminum to form protective alumina have structures which depend largely upon the concentration of manganese in the alloy. Alloys which contain more than 7.5% manganese form manganese rich scales, whereas alloys which contain lower levels of manganese form scales that are composed almost entirely of the oxides of iron. Small manganese oxide nodules grow through the alumina scales which form on alloys containing in excess of 9% aluminum. The most oxidation resistant alloys, having compositions within the range Fe-(5–10)%Mn-(6–10)% Al, develop continuous protective alumina scales and are totally ferritic. Austenite is detrimental to the oxidation resistance of duplex alloys as it promotes the breakdown of preexisting alumina scales and the growth of bulky manganese rich oxides. Small additions of chromium are beneficial and reduce the concentration of aluminum required to form protective alumina scales.

Notes: Abstract Oxide scales formed on iron-manganese alloys are generally considered to be similar to those formed on the parent metals. Metallographic examination is used in conjunction with EMPA, XRD, and X-ray imaging to reveal the presence of the additional phases Mn2O3 and Mn3O4 in the scales formed on binary alloys containing up to 40% manganese at 700 and 800°C in 200 Torr oxygen. A mechanism is proposed to explain the apparent change in growth from iron-rich to manganese-rich scales during oxidation of Fe-40Mn at 800°C.

Notes: Summary Acid soils having high levels of aluminium (Al) can drastically reduce yields in alfalfa and the most economically viable solution to the problem appears to be the development of Al-tolerant cultivars. To assist with the choice of a breeding method, a six-parent alfalfa diallel (crosses and reciprocals included but not parents) was evaluated in Al-toxic nutrient solution in terms of height (HT) and dry weight (DW). General combining ability was significant for both traits and constituted the majority of the genetic variation. Specific combining ability was significant only for HT and reciprocal effects were significant only for DW. Tolerance appeared to be at least partially dominant to sensitivity. Results indicate that a mass selection scheme, such as recurrent phenotypic selection, may be effective in increasing levels of tolerance in at least some alfalfa populations and that minor grains may also be achieved through exploiting non-additive genetic variation.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of coke formation and its removal from nickel, copper and alloys have been studied and the results correlated with the morphology of the deposits. Coke deposition from hydrogen-propylene-steam was fast on nickel and slower on copper and the alloys. The deposition on nickel was filamentary in appearance, resulting from a heterogeneously catalysed process, whereas the deposit on the alloys and on non-catalytic copper was essentially uniform. On the alloys, protection appeared to result from the production of scales, containing predominantly Cr3C2 and Cr2O3, on the surface. At the same time, carburization of the alloy was reduced, apparently as a result of the formation of a silicon-enriched layer at the base of the scale. Steam was found to have little effect on coke formation. However, in the absence of gas-phase hydrocarbons, coke gasification by steam was rapid for nickel but several orders of magnitude slower for the alloys. The main effect of steam is to aid in the formation of scales that are protective against coking and carburization, by promoting oxide formation.
