    Description: Author(s): G. Long, M. DeMarco, M. Chudyk, J. Steiner, D. Coffey, H. Zeng, Y. K. Li, G. H. Cao, and Z. A. Xu The Mössbauer spectra (MS) of powder samples of SmFe 1− x Co x AsO ( x = 0.0, 0.05, and 0.1) were measured in applied fields up to 9 T and at temperatures up to 298 K. SmFeAsO is magnetically ordered with T N = 137 K and has a hyperfine magnetic field of (4.98 ± 0.18) T at 4.2 K. In applied magnetic fields... [Phys. Rev. B 84, 064423] Published Tue Aug 23, 2011

    Description: Experimental investigations of transactinoide elements provide benchmark results for chemical theory and probe the predictive power of trends in the periodic table. So far, in gas-phase chemical reactions, simple inorganic compounds with the transactinoide in its highest oxidation state have been synthesized. Single-atom production rates, short half-lives, and harsh experimental conditions limited the number of experimentally accessible compounds. We applied a gas-phase carbonylation technique previously tested on short-lived molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) isotopes to the preparation of a carbonyl complex of seaborgium, the 106th element. The volatile seaborgium complex showed the same volatility and reactivity with a silicon dioxide surface as those of the hexacarbonyl complexes of the lighter homologs Mo and W. Comparison of the product's adsorption enthalpy with theoretical predictions and data for the lighter congeners supported a Sg(CO)6 formulation.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Even, J -- Yakushev, A -- Dullmann, Ch E -- Haba, H -- Asai, M -- Sato, T K -- Brand, H -- Di Nitto, A -- Eichler, R -- Fan, F L -- Hartmann, W -- Huang, M -- Jager, E -- Kaji, D -- Kanaya, J -- Kaneya, Y -- Khuyagbaatar, J -- Kindler, B -- Kratz, J V -- Krier, J -- Kudou, Y -- Kurz, N -- Lommel, B -- Miyashita, S -- Morimoto, K -- Morita, K -- Murakami, M -- Nagame, Y -- Nitsche, H -- Ooe, K -- Qin, Z -- Schadel, M -- Steiner, J -- Sumita, T -- Takeyama, M -- Tanaka, K -- Toyoshima, A -- Tsukada, K -- Turler, A -- Usoltsev, I -- Wakabayashi, Y -- Wang, Y -- Wiehl, N -- Yamaki, S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Sep 19;345(6203):1491-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1255720.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Helmholtz-Institut Mainz, 55099 Mainz, Germany. ; GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH, 64291 Darmstadt, Germany. ; Helmholtz-Institut Mainz, 55099 Mainz, Germany. Description: The Gorkha earthquake (magnitude 7.8) on 25 April 2015 and later aftershocks struck South Asia, killing ~9000 people and damaging a large region. Supported by a large campaign of responsive satellite data acquisitions over the earthquake disaster zone, our team undertook a satellite image survey of the earthquakes' induced geohazards in Nepal and China and an assessment of the geomorphic, tectonic, and lithologic controls on quake-induced landslides. Timely analysis and communication aided response and recovery and informed decision-makers. We mapped 4312 coseismic and postseismic landslides. We also surveyed 491 glacier lakes for earthquake damage but found only nine landslide-impacted lakes and no visible satellite evidence of outbursts. Landslide densities correlate with slope, peak ground acceleration, surface downdrop, and specific metamorphic lithologies and large plutonic intrusions.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Kargel, J S -- Leonard, G J -- Shugar, D H -- Haritashya, U K -- Bevington, A -- Fielding, E J -- Fujita, K -- Geertsema, M -- Miles, E S -- Steiner, J -- Anderson, E -- Bajracharya, S -- Bawden, G W -- Breashears, D F -- Byers, A -- Collins, B -- Dhital, M R -- Donnellan, A -- Evans, T L -- Geai, M L -- Glasscoe, M T -- Green, D -- Gurung, D R -- Heijenk, R -- Hilborn, A -- Hudnut, K -- Huyck, C -- Immerzeel, W W -- Liming, Jiang -- Jibson, R -- Kaab, A -- Khanal, N R -- Kirschbaum, D -- Kraaijenbrink, P D A -- Lamsal, D -- Shiyin, Liu -- Mingyang, Lv -- McKinney, D -- Nahirnick, N K -- Zhuotong, Nan -- Ojha, S -- Olsenholler, J -- Painter, T H -- Pleasants, M -- Pratima, K C -- Yuan, Q I -- Raup, B H -- Regmi, D -- Rounce, D R -- Sakai, A -- Donghui, Shangguan -- Shea, J M -- Shrestha, A B -- Shukla, A -- Stumm, D -- van der Kooij, M -- Voss, K -- Xin, Wang -- Weihs, B -- Wolfe, D -- Lizong, Wu -- Xiaojun, Yao -- Yoder, M R -- Young, N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2016 Jan 8;351(6269):aac8353. doi: 10.1126/science.aac8353. Description: Epithelial growth factor-like 7 (EGFL7) is a protein that is secreted by endothelial cells and plays an important role in angiogenesis. Although EGFL7 is aberrantly overexpressed in solid tumors, its role in leukemia has not been evaluated. Here, we report that levels of both EGFL7 mRNA and EGFL7 protein are...

Description: Biological communication by means of structural color has existed for at least 500 million years. Structural color is commonly observed in the animal kingdom, but has been little studied in plants. We present a striking example of multilayer-based strong iridescent coloration in plants, in the fruit of Pollia condensata. The...

Description: Global trends like growing environmental awareness and demand for resource efficiency motivate an abandonment of lubricants in metal forming. However, dry forming evokes increased friction and wear. Especially, dry deep drawing of aluminum alloys leads to intensive interaction between tool and workpiece due to its high adhesion tendency. One approach to improve the tribological behavior is the application of carbon based coatings. These coatings are characterized by high wear resistance. In order to investigate the potential of carbon based coatings for dry deep drawing, friction and wear behavior of different coating compositions are evaluated in strip drawing tests. This setup is used to model the tribological conditions in the flange area of deep drawing operations. The tribological behavior of tetrahedral amorphous (ta-C) and hydrogenated amorphous carbon coatings with and without tungsten modification (a-C:H:W, a-C:H) is investigated. The influence of tool topography is ana...

Description: Previous studies indicate that the microstructure of individual white matter (WM) tracts is related to cognitive function. More recent studies indicate that the microstructure of individual tracts is highly correlated and that a property common across WM is related to overall cognitive function in adults. However, little is known about...
