    Description: 〈p〉East Africa has provided the earliest known evidence for Oldowan stone artifacts and hominin-induced stone tool cutmarks dated to ~2.6 million years (Ma) ago. The ~1.8-million-year-old stone artifacts from Ain Hanech (Algeria) were considered to represent the oldest archaeological materials in North Africa. Here we report older stone artifacts and cutmarked bones excavated from two nearby deposits at Ain Boucherit estimated to ~1.9 Ma ago, and the older to ~2.4 Ma ago. Hence, the Ain Boucherit evidence shows that ancestral hominins inhabited the Mediterranean fringe in northern Africa much earlier than previously thought. The evidence strongly argues for early dispersal of stone tool manufacture and use from East Africa or a possible multiple-origin scenario of stone technology in both East and North Africa.〈/p〉

    Description: The earliest hominin occupation of Europe is one of the most debated topics in palaeoanthropology. However, the purportedly oldest of the Early Pleistocene sites in Eurasia lack precise age control and contain stone tools rather than human fossil remains. Here we report the discovery of a human mandible associated with an assemblage of Mode 1 lithic tools and faunal remains bearing traces of hominin processing, in stratigraphic level TE9 at the site of the Sima del Elefante, Atapuerca, Spain. Level TE9 has been dated to the Early Pleistocene (approximately 1.2-1.1 Myr), based on a combination of palaeomagnetism, cosmogenic nuclides and biostratigraphy. The Sima del Elefante site thus emerges as the oldest, most accurately dated record of human occupation in Europe, to our knowledge. The study of the human mandible suggests that the first settlement of Western Europe could be related to an early demographic expansion out of Africa.     Description: Seventeen Middle Pleistocene crania from the Sima de los Huesos site (Atapuerca, Spain) are analyzed, including seven new specimens. This sample makes it possible to thoroughly characterize a Middle Pleistocene hominin paleodeme and to address hypotheses about the origin and evolution of the Neandertals. Using a variety of techniques, the hominin-bearing layer could be reassigned to a period around 430,000 years ago. The sample shows a consistent morphological pattern with derived Neandertal features present in the face and anterior vault, many of which are related to the masticatory apparatus.     Description: A paleomagnetic investigation at the Gran Dolina site excavation (Atapuerca, Spain) shows that the sediments containing the recently discovered human occupation were deposited more than 780,000 years ago, near the time of the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary. Forty-one oriented samples were obtained from 22 sites along an 18-meter section of the Gran Dolina karst filling. The lower 16 sites displayed reversed-polarity magnetizations whereas the upper six sites were normal.     Notes: The first report of a palaeomagnetic study of a Roman pottery kiln is presented. Individual bricks from the walls of the heating chamber have been sampled and measured in order to determine their palaeomagnetic directions. the measurements indicate that the innermost part of the structure was heated well above the Curie point of haematite, enabling the use of the palaeomagnetic declination and inclination, after the axial dipole correction and fitting to the Paris I(t) curve, to infer the age of the last heating event.

    Notes: A palaeomagnetic study of Permo-Triassic cover rocks in the Asturian—Cantabrian Arc has revealed characteristic magnetizations in 136 samples from 14 sites, yielding a mean palaeopole for each of the three regions studied (Cabo de Peñas, Villaviciosa, and Tudanca). Previous work on remagnetized Palaeozoic formations in the area revealed Permian (or younger) tightening of the Arc on the basis of palaeomagnetic declinations that show relative rotations of more than 100°. According to the new palaeopoles obtained in this study, these rotations are not present to any comparable extent in the Permo-Triassic deposits, allowing us to conclude that the bulk of the rotations in the Arc is Permian in age.

    Notes: The Triassic limestones of the cover of the Catalan Coastal Range display a secondary magnetization acquired after folding which took place during the Palaeogene. The exposure and subsequent erosion of these rocks during the Palaeogene resulted in the formation of conglomerates with Triassic limestone cobbles in the southeastern Ebro Basin. Palaeomagnetic data indicate that both the Triassic limestones which form the cover and the Triassic limestone cobbles from the conglomerate were remagnetized during the same time span.Thus it seems that fluids were expelled out of the margins into the basin during deformation, causing the remagnetization both in the foreland basin environment and in the folded margin.

    Notes: Summary The application of the progressive thermal demagnetization procedure of volcanic rock debris has been frequently used to determine the emplacement temperatures of pyroclastic deposits and thus to characterize the nature of these volcanic deposits. This debris consists of a mixture of juvenile fragments derived from the explosive fragmentation of erupting magma and an assortment of lithic clasts derived mainly from the walls of a volcanic conduit, as well as from the ground. The temperature at which the clasts were deposited can be estimated by analyzing its remanent magnetization. To do this, oriented samples of clasts are subjected to progressive thermal demagnetization and the directions of the resulting remanent vectors provide the necessary information. Clasts of basalt, andesite, limestone, pumice and homebricks have previously been used to estimate the emplacement temperatures of pyroclastic deposits. According to our data, clasts of red sandstones also seem to be good carriers of thermoremanent magnetization. We have carried out a paleomagnetic study on a Quaternary, lithic-rich, massive, pyroclastic deposit from the Puig d'Adri volcano (Catalan Volcanic Zone), which contains a large number of red sandstone clasts. It is concluded that the studied deposit cannot be considered as a lahar or as a pyroclastic surge deposit, considering both the emplacement temperature and the morphological features.
