    Description: Sudden water pollution in the Yellow River have brought serious economic and social losses to the basin. To better study the characteristics of pollutant transport due to aforementioned water pollution downstream of Xiaolangdi Reservoir, a mathematical model coupling of rainfall-runoff, hydrodynamic and advection-diffusion simulation was established. The emergency response to pollutant transport was analyzed by adjusting discharge of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir. The results show that the discharge is non-linearly related to the arrival time of pollutant at some important sections such as the downstream water intakes, duration and peak concentration. Moreover, compared with the previous data, the discharge from Xiaolangdi Reservoir reduced, while pollutant’s arrival time was relatively longer, which means emergency response should take more time.     Description: By using 78 newly determined timings of light minima together with those collected from the literature, we analysed the changes in the observed minus calculated (O–C) diagram in HS 0705+6700, a short-period (2.3 h) eclipsing binary that consists of a very hot subdwarf B-type (sdB) star and a very cool fully convective red dwarf. We confirmed the cyclic variation in the O–C and refined the parameters of the circumbinary brown dwarf (reported to orbit the binary system in 2009) by analysing the changes for the light travel time effect that arises from the gravitational influence of the third body. Our results indicate the lower mass limit of the third body to be M 3 sin i '  = 33.7(±1.6) M Jup . This companion would be a brown dwarf if its orbital inclination is larger than 27 $_{.}^{\circ}$ 7 and it is orbiting the central eclipsing binary with an eccentricity e  ~ 0.2 at a separation of about 3.7(±0.1) au.

    Description: A novel hydroxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer (HTLF) was synthesized; FT-IR, GPC and 1 H-NMR result show that HTLF was synthesized successfully. Then HTLF was cured with HDI trimer, the structure of cured product was characterized by FT-IR. Compared with traditional solid fluorine elastomer, Cured HTLF has higher char yield and faster thermal decomposition rate. It ascribed to the introduction of ring structure the cross-link structure formed in the curing process. The study of chemical resistant properties and tensile strength of cured fluoroelastomer film suggested that Cured HTLF was provided with similar mmechanical properties, chemical resistant property than solid fluorine elastomer.

    Description: The Cenozoic Xuelong Shan antiformal dome is located along the northern segment of the Ailao Shan-Red River shear zone in Yunnan, China. Subhorizontal foliation in the gneiss core is recognized, representing a broad top-to-NE shear initiated under amphibolite facies conditions and propagating into greenschist facies in the mantling schist and strike-slip shear zone. Microfabrics of crystallographic preferred orientations (CPOs) in quartz suggest that the deformation temperatures increased with increasing structural depth from the upper crust (300-500°C) in the mantling schist to the mid-crust (15 km or more, ≥650°C) in the gneissic core. This trend is mirrored by variations in the metamorphic grade of the syn-kinematic mineral assemblages and microstructures, which range from garnet + amphibole + biotite + sillimanite + rutile + feldspar in the core to garnet + staurolite + biotite + epidote + muscovite within the limb units. The dome experienced the following deformation history: (1) a broad top-to-NE shear in the subhorizontal foliation of the gneiss core during the first stage of deformation (D1); (2) opposing reverse-sense shear along the two schist limbs of the dome during contraction-related doming (D2-D3); (3) sinistral strike-slip shearing within the eastern limb (D4); and (4) extensional deformation (D5). The structural-thermal patterns suggest the antiformal dome formation was roughly coeval with top-to-NE ductile shearing in the mid-crust of Tibet at 32 Ma or earlier. A major implication is that there was a phase of contractional ductile deformation in the region prior to the initiation of strike-slip deformation. This article is protected by copyright.     Description: The impact of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on the power networks at middle and low latitudes has attracted attention in recent years with the increase of large-scale power networks. In this study, we report the GIC monitored at two low-latitude 500 kV substations of China during the large storm of 17 March 2015. The GIC due to the SSC was much higher than that during the storm main phase. This phenomenon is more likely to happen at low-latitude locations, highlighting the importance of SSC in inducing GIC in low-latitude power networks. Furthermore, we ran a global MHD model to simulate the GIC during this SSC event by using the solar wind observation as input. The model results reproduced the main features of the GIC. The study also indicated that the eastward component of the geoelectric field is dominant for low-latitude locations during the SSC events. Further, topology and electrical parameters of the power grids make significant differences in the GIC levels.

    Description: For unattended telescopes in Antarctic, the remote operation, autonomous observation and control are essential. An EPICS-(Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) and RTS2-(Remote Telescope System, 2nd Version) based autonomous observation and control system with remoted operation is introduced in this paper. EPICS is a set of open source software tools, libraries and applications developed collaboratively and used worldwide to create distributed soft real-time control systems for scientific instruments while RTS2 is an open source environment for control of a fully autonomous observatory. Using the advantage of EPICS and RTS2, respectively, a combined integrated software framework for autonomous observation and control is established that use RTS2 to fulfil the function of astronomical observation and use EPICS to fulfil the device control of telescope. A command and status interface for EPICS and RTS2 is designed to make the EPICS IOC (Input/Output Controller) components integrate to RTS2 directly. For the specification and requirement of control system of telescope in Antarctic, core components named Executor and Auto-focus for autonomous observation is designed and implemented with remote operation user interface based on browser-server mode. The whole system including the telescope is tested in Lijiang Observatory in Yunnan Province for practical observation to complete the autonomous observation and control, including telescope control, camera control, dome control, weather information acquisition with the local and remote operation.

    Description: A laser ion source based on Nd:YAG laser has been being studied at the Institute of Modern Physics for the production of high intensity high charge state heavy ion beams in the past ten years, for possible applications both in a future accelerator complex and in heavy ion cancer therapy facilities. Based on the previous results for the production of multiple-charged ions from a wide range of heavy elements with a 3 J/8 ns Nd:YAG laser [Zhao et al. , Rev. Sci. Instrum. 85 , 02B910 (2014)], higher laser energy and intensity in the focal spot are necessary for the production of highly charged ions from the elements heavier than aluminum. Therefore, the laser ion source was upgraded with a new Nd:YAG laser, the maximum energy of which is 8 J and the pulse duration can be adjusted from 8 to 18 ns. Since then, the charge state distributions of ions from various elements generated by the 8 J Nd:YAG laser were investigated for different experimental conditions, such as laser energy, pulse duration, power density in the focal spot, and incidence angle. It was shown that the incidence angle is one of the most important parameters for the production of highly charged ions. The capability of producing highly charged ions from the elements lighter than silver was demonstrated with the incidence angle of 10° and laser power density of 8 × 10 13 W cm −2 in the focal spot, which makes a laser ion source complementary to the superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source for the future accelerator complex especially in terms of the ion beam production from some refractory elements. Nevertheless, great efforts with regard to the extraction of intense ion beams, modification of the ion beam pulse duration, and reliability of the ion source still need to be made for practical applications.

    Description: Geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) flowing in long conductor systems on the ground are a well-known space weather hazard. We develop a new approach to simulating GICs by combining a global MHD model with a local one-dimensional method. As an example, we apply this approach to model the GIC at the Pirttikoski 400 kV transformer of the Finnish high-voltage power system during the space weather event of 22–23 September 1999. The modeled results can capture the main observational features, and the model performances is better than two GIC persistence models, which demonstrates this promising new approach in GIC forecasting.
