Description: Aftershocks of the 29 November 1978 Oaxaca, Mexico, earthquake (surface-wave magnitude Ms = 7.8) define a rupture area of about 6000 square kilometers along the boundary of the Cocos sea-plate subduction. This area had not ruptured in a large (Ms 〉/= 7), shallow earthquake since the years 1928 and 1931 and had been designated a seismic "gap." The region has also been seismically quiet for small to moderate (M 〉/= 4), shallow (depth 〈/= 60 kilometers) earthquakes since 1966; this quiet zone became about six times larger in 1973. A major earthquake (Ms = 7.5 +/- 0.25) was forecast at this location on the basis of the quiescence that began in 1973. The aftershock data indicate that an area approximately equivalent in size to the seismic gap has now broken.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Singh, S K -- Havskov, J -- McNally, K -- Ponce, L -- Hearn, T -- Vassiliou, M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Mar 14;207(4436):1211-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17776859" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The Fennoscandian Long Range Project (FENNOLORA) recorded refraction data on a profile from northern Norway through Sweden to the Baltic Sea. The data have been used to interpret complex crust and upper mantle structure to 450 km depth and the data are unique in Scandinavia for their extension and quality. In this study, crustal Q has been determined for P-waves along the profile using the spectral ratio method. Q was found to be frequency dependent of the form Q=Q0fm, where Q0 and m are constants and f is the frequency. In order to simplify the presentation and interpretation of the results and to allow comparison to other studies, Q was also determined assuming independence of frequency. Q varied by up to a factor of 3 along the profile with generally increasing values going from north to south. This might correlate with more complex structure at the northern segment than at the southern segment. Average crustal Q for the whole profile using all data was Q= 29f0.96 and the corresponding constant Q was 460. Since most of the energy in the spectra was from 3 to 30 Hz, it seems that the frequency-independent Q is comparable to Q(f) at the average frequency [at 16 Hz, Q(f)= 415]. The sensitivity of Q with depth was investigated using pairs of stations with average distance to shot points of 50, 150 and 250 km. The average frequency-independent Q values thus obtained were 430, 470 and 480 respectively with a somewhat larger variation for the frequency-dependent Q values. However, using the present method and data set, there is no indication of significant variation of crustal Q with depth. This is in contrast to many coda Q studies which give increased Q with depth.

Notes: The small, arctic Jan Mayen Island, site of the World's northernmost active volcano, Beerenberg, is part of the mid-Atlantic ridge system and located along the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone (JMFZ). Recent data from the local seismic network, and fault plane solutions from the global network, indicate that the island is located at a ridge-crest intersection, which might explain the origin of the island and the associated volcanism. Moreover, the new data suggest a series of offset segments of the Mohn's Ridge, overlapping in an en echelon pattern. In January 1985, a flank eruption was for the first time observed with the local seismic network. Volcanic tremors and low-frequency events were observed on 5 January at 2230 h and 10 hours later the first large earthquake occurred. No visual confirmation of the eruption was made until 6 January at 1630 h. The seismic observations rule out the possibility that the large earthquake caused the eruption; it seems more likely that the changes in local stress conditions triggered the earthquake and that the eruption started before the first large earthquake. Recent observations show that the local network provides an efficient tool for monitoring and warning of volcanic activity. However, since there was no change in the local seismicity in the days or months before the 1985 eruption, it seems to be difficult to make long-term predictions of Beerenberg flank eruptions without using other techniques such as observations of tilt.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of the attenuation of seismic waves as measured by the quality factorQc (for coda waves) has been performed for the volcanic Jan Mayen island in the Norwegian Sea, using earthquakes near the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone and local seismic stations on the Jan Mayen island.Qc values of the order of 100 at a frequency of 1 Hz are found, increasing to about 300 at 10 Hz. These values are typical of what usually is observed in tectonically influenced areas near oceanic/continental plate boundaries. It is considered likely that these results are influenced by the fact that the Jan Mayen island, in spite of its proximity to a fracture zone, is located in the northern end of the Jan Mayen Ridge, which now is accepted as being a micro-continent. The presence of the active Beerenberg volcano on the Jan Mayen island does give rise to a somewhat stronger attenuation for waves traversing that area, but this effect is weak and quite limited in spatial extent. There is also a slight increase in attenuation as a function of depth, but less than what is observed in terms of lateral variations. This is reasonable in view of the very strong lateral variations in lithospheric structure exhibited in this area.
