Notes: Abstract Allozyme and restriction enzyme analysis of mtDNA was used to study variation in samples from British populations of the marine limpet Patella vulgata in two regions. South Wales and Northeast England. Allozyme analysis revealed significant differences in allele frequencies among samples. However F ST (population differentiation) values were no higher between than within regions, indicating that genetic heterogeneity was localised and not related to geographic separation. For mtDNA, samples from South Wales exhibited higher haplotype diversity values than samples from Northeast England. In addition there were substantial differences in the haplotype distribution between regions. The value of θ, the haploid analogoue of F ST , was low within regions (θ=0.09) but high between regions (θ=0.44). The estimated difference in migration rate for allozymes and mtDNA exceed the neutral expectation, unless it is assumed that there are influential differences in the magnitude of female and male gametic dispersal.

Notes: Abstract Systems with a gauge degeneracy are characterized either by supplementary conditions, or by a set of generators of gauge transformations, or by a set of constraints deriving from Dirac's canonical constraint method. These constraints can be expressed either as conditions on the field algebra ℱ, or on the states on ℱ. In aC*-algebra framework, we show that the state conditions give rise to a factor algebra of a subalgebra of the field algebra ℱ. This factor algebra, ℛ, is free of state conditions. In this formulation we show also that the algebraic conditions can be treated in the same way as the state conditions. The connection between states on ℱ and states on ℛ is investigated further within this framework, as is also the set of transformations which are compatible with the set of constraints. It is also shown that not every set of constraints can give rise to a nontrivial system. Finally as an example, the abstract theory is applied to the electromagnetic field, and this treatment can be generalized to all systems of bosons with linear constraints. The question of dynamics is not discussed.

Notes: Abstract We show how to construct irreducible projective representations of the infinite dimensional Lie group Map (S 1, $$\mathbb{T}$$ ), by embedding it into the group of Bogoliubov automorphisms of the CAR. Using techniques of G. Segal for extending certain representations of Map (S 1, SU(2)) we show that our representations extend to give representations of a certain infinite dimensional superalgebra. We relate our work to the well known boson-fermion correspondence which exists in 1+1 dimensions.

Notes: [Auszug] IN placing major and minor genes on an equal footing, Mr. Dufton has failed to realise the modest rôle played by modifiers in a genetical formula. Had he worked out the formula, he would have discovered that the 729 genotypes produce only seven different kinds of effective gametes, so that the ...

Notes: [Auszug] In analysing his results, however, Muench assumed that (Hc/p)T is independent of pressure. There is no satisfactory experimental evidence in support of this hypothesis : the earlier work of Kan, Sudovstov and Lasarew2 at pressures of 1,350 and 1,700 atmospheres as not sufficiently accurate to allow ...

Notes: [Auszug] To make a true spectrum top—which is not copyright, so far as I know—take a disc of white paper, and one of black, of equal size. Spin the white one on a disc of cardboard mounted on a nail, and while it is spinning draw a small brush well charged with lamp-black water-colour paint, steadily ...

Notes: [Auszug] Experiments hitherto performed on the scattering cross-sections of various substances for D—D neutrons have led to fundamentally different results. Most observers have found that the cross-section σ increases regularly with the atomic number, and some have deduced from their results the ...

Notes: [Auszug] MOST neutron workers hitherto have used Ra-Be, Ra-B or Ra-F as sources; these yield neutrons with continuous ranges of energies extending up to several m.e.v. The D—D nuclear reaction is considered to yield a homogeneous group of neutrons of about 2 m.e.v. energy. It is of interest, therefore, ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR J. J. THOMSON1 has suggested that a photon is a finite, harmonic train of circular lines of electric force originating when an electron in a radiating atom falls from one energy-level to another. Such circular lines of force would move at right angles to their planes, and ...

Notes: [Auszug] KLEMPEKER1 has recently shown that postulation of the existence of a radioactive isotope, 19K40, with a large nuclear spin, affords the most likely explanation of the radioactivity of potassium. He appears, however, to have over-estimated the value of ...
