Description: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) females grow larger and mature later than males, making all-female stocks economically advantageous. The objective of this research was to develop methods for the production of monosex populations of trout through the use of sex steroids. The synthetic estrogen ethynylestradiol-17α (EE2) was administered in single period-immersion treatment of 400 µg/l for 1, 2, 4 and 8 h to groups of newly-hatched sac fries of rainbow trout and in a 30 day dietary treatment of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg/kgf of newly swum up fries. 73.4 And 94.5% females were obtained with 1 and 2-h single-immersion of EE2 respectively (38% female in control). However, higher doses progressively reduced the survival drastically. Sex ratios of dietary treatment of fry were 60, 57.4, 78 and 94% females respectively. Treatments also resulted in a slight increase of both weight and length. This increase was related to the method of hormonal exposure (dietary 12 〉"〉 immersion), but not dosage-dependent for utilized hormone. This demonstrates that the direct feminization of rainbow trout can be achieved and resulted in sex reversal ratio effectively but not decreased the growth, as observed in hormonal sex reversed females, and it would be a noticeable approach to the direct feminization of trout.

Description: The sex reversal technique in fish is widespread in many countries. The development of these techniques is desirable because rainbow trout males reach their gonad maturity earlier compared to the females. Rainbow trout alevins were treated with 17α-methyltestosterone incorporated in the diet (0.5. 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 mg/kg) for 60 days from the beginning of first feeding. Sex was determined at 180 and 680 dpf by sampling fish (n = 20) from each group and examining gross gonadal morphology under a dissecting microscope. Also sex reversal ratio and growth performance were determined in hormone-treated groups. These sex reversed functional males were reared for brood stock until they attained sexual maturity. At the end of experiment, normal rainbow trout eggs were fertilized with the sperms taken from sex reversed males for producing all-female populations. Examination of the results showed that 17α- methyltestosterone was effective in all treatment. The highest sex reversal ratio with 100% was observed in group treated with 0.5, 1.5 and 3 mg/kg 17α- methyltestosterone. The highest live weight ratios were observed in groups fed with 6, 0.5 17α-methyltestosterone and control group. Female progeny produced from the sex reversed males were 100 % in all males that sired offspring. All female trout stocks produced by this method have advantage in rainbow trout culture since the fish is not meant for direct human consumption and is used to generate brood stock, therefore, difference of growth parameters do not influence the success.

Description: In May 2009, the fingerlings of Indian major carps, (i.e., catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita), mrigal (Cirrhinus mirigala)) were conducted with mean weight 25.4±4.1g, 36.6±3.5g and 58.8±4.5g, respectively. Fingerlings of Indian major carps were cultured the fingerlings of chinese carps. According to the randomized complete block design with 4 treatments and 3 replications in earthen ponds. Four treatments were defined in species ratios and combinations.Treatment-1(T1) with 30 % of Indian major carps (catla, rohu and mrigal) and 70 % of Chinese carps phytophage (Hypophthalmic molitrix), big head (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and amur (Ctenopharyngodon idella)) with common carp, treatment-2 (T2) with 50% of Indian major carps and 50% of Chinese carps treatment-3 (T3) with 70% of Indian major carps and 30% of Chinese carps with common carp and treatment-4 (control treatment) with 100% of Chinese carps (with common density and combination in Khuzestan Province). Eevery 45 days, biometry was carried out by using the case net in earthen ponds. The culture period was for six month from May to November. The maximum net production of fishes was obtained inTreatment-2 (50% of Indian major carps) with mean harvest 4254.9 kg/ha. The experimental treatments were not significant with each other and control treatment. In end of culture, mean (SD) weight obtained for rohu, catla and mrigal were 1136±16, 726±122 and 773±89g in T1, were 1129±85, 902±78 and 788±125g in T2 and were 1054±38, 839±168g and 849±106g in T3, respectively. Statistical analysis showed no significantly different in total weight of fish harvest in treatments with control group (customary culture in Iran). However, this experiment determined that Indian major carp could increase production and diversity in warm water fish culture in Iran.

Description: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of green tea on a non-specific immunity of Mugil cephalus. Three hundred and sixty Gray mullet larvae with average weight of 0.75 ± 0.02 g and an average length of 4.40 ±0.81cm collected from Ramin port where is located at 5 km far from the Chabahar and finally transferred to lab of trial in Offshore Research Center. This research was designed based on 3 treatments, each with 3 replicates. The major factors examined containing growth factors mainly consists of average weight, average daily gain, protein efficiency rate, protein productive rate, hematological and biochemical factors including globin, albumin, total protein, lysozyme, ultimately, immunological factors, and respiratory burst and phagocytosis percent. In general, the results of this study showed that the addition of 200 mg of green tea extract per kilogram of diet led to a significant increase in final weight, food intake, daily growth rate and efficiency of protein gray mullet were compared to control. Fish fed diet 50 to 200 ppm green tea extract, showed a significant increase in the number of erythrocytes to control. The number of white blood cells from control with 200 ppm of green tea extract regularly gradually increased. The highest amounts of hemoglobin in the samples containing 200 ppm of green tea extract were measured. The hematocrit in control and the highest levels in samples with 200 ppm of green tea extract were measured. The total protein, albumin and globin in the blood serum fed treatments with green tea extract showed a significant increase compared to the control treatment (p〈0.05). The highest total protein, albumin and globin treatment with 200 ppm of green tea extract of food was observed (p〈0.05). The highest activity of lysozyme, phagocytosis respiratory burst were observed in treatment green tea extract 200 ppm of food. Treatment with 200 ppm of food. showed a minimal mortality after challenge with bacteria photobacterium damselae compared to the control treatment.

Description: Medicinal plants have been used in oriental medicine for centuries. Echinacea purpurea (Asteraceae), also known as the purple coneflower, is an herbal medicine with positive effects on various immune parameters that has been used customarily as a treatment for the common cold, coughs, bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, and some inflammatory conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Echinacea purpurea (EP) extract on a non-specific immunity of Mugil cephalus. The highest lysozyme activity, immunoglobulin, phagocytosis and respiratory burst was observed in treatment containing 200 mg EP extract per kg food. Treatment containing 200 mg EP extract per kg food showed a minimal mortality after challenge with bacteria photobacterium damselae compared to the control treatment. Finally, the present results suggest that diet containing 200 200 mg EP extract per kg food could improve growth, hematology, immunity and resistance against photobacteriosis of grey mullet.
