    Notes: We describe the design, operation, and calibration of a crossed-beam experiment for the study of intramultiplet mixing collisions of short-lived electronically excited Ne{(2p)5(3p)}≡{α} atoms with ground-state atoms/molecules. The excellent performance of almost 1 kHz/A(ring)2 (number of counts per unit of inelastic cross section) enables us to measure, with good accuracy, absolute total Ne**–X cross sections Q||Mk||l←k, for the {α}k→{α}l transition. Here Mk is the magnetic quantum number of the electronic angular momentum J of the initial {α}k state with respect to the asymptotic relative velocity. The polarized {α}k state is produced with a polarized laser. Narrow-band interference filters are used to detect the fluorescence radiation from the short-lived {α}k and {α}l states. An extensive series of measurements has been undertaken to calibrate the experiment. These are related to, e.g., beam properties, the optical-pumping process, and the optical detection system. The basic principles of the collision experiment itself have been thoroughly examined as well. We discuss the kinds of experiments it is possible to perform. These have yielded absolute (within 30%) cross sections between 0.05 and 50 A(ring)2. Very strong polarization effects have been observed, with 0.1(approximately-less-than)Q||0||l←k/Q||1||l←k (approximately-less-than)10. The average collision energy has been varied between 50 and 250 meV (depending to some extent on the collision partner), by using a seeded primary beam and by manipulating the Newton diagram of primary- and secondary-beam velocity vectors. Time-of-flight measurements with a laser chopper have been performed as well. The wide range of Ne**-collision partners offers the option of studying intramultiplet mixing pure (He, Ne), and in conjunction with Penning ionization (noble gas atoms Ar, Kr, Xe) or even angular-momentum coupling and anisotropy effects (molecules, from H2 to CO2, N2O).

    Notes: It is demonstrated that the measured value of the self-bias voltage on electrodes with an insulating target plate in a radio-frequency dry etching system is strongly influenced by the configuration of the electrode, and may have no straightforward relation with the actual self-bias voltage between the target surface and ground. The mechanism allowing measurement of the self-bias voltage is identified as plasma-induced surface conduction on the insulating target plate assisted by high electric fields at the target plate edge.

    Notes: rf impedance, dc self-bias, and ion sheath (dark space) thicknesses are measured in an O2 discharge for 7–53 Pa pressure and 50–800 W rf power (13.56 MHz). Special attention is paid to corrections for reactor stray impedances. It is concluded that the discharge can be described as a capacitance (the ion sheath) with both a parallel and a series resistance, the series element being the more important one. Good agreement is found between optical and electrical measurements of the ion sheath thickness. Evidence is presented that the dc potential difference between plasma and ground and rf electrode can be estimated with reasonable accuracy from the dc self-bias and the optical dark space thicknesses. Positive ion acceleration in the ion sheath and electron-neutral collisions in the bulk of the plasma glow account for only part of the total rf power transfer. It is suggested that significant dissipation takes place near the glow-sheath boundary, although a quantitative description cannot be given yet.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we present a modal approach to “contrastive logic”, the logic of contrasts as these appear in natural language conjunctions such as ‘but’. We use a simple modal logic, which is an extension of the well-knownS5 logic, and base the contrastive operators proposed by Francez in [2] on the basic modalities that appear in this logic. We thus obtain a logic for contrastive operators that is more in accord with the tradition of intensional logic, and that, moreover — we argue — has some more natural properties. Particularly, attention is paid to nesting contrastive operators. We show that nestings of ‘but’ give quite natural results, and indicate how nestings of other contrastive operators can be done adequately. Finally, we discuss the example of the Hangman's Paradox and some similarities (and differences) with default reasoning.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper a formal framework is proposed in which variousinformative actions are combined, corresponding to the different ways in whichrational agents can acquire information. In order to solve the variousconflicts that could possibly occur when acquiring information fromdifferent sources, we propose a classification of the informationthat an agent possesses according to credibility. Based on this classification, we formalize what itmeans for agents to have seen or heard something, or to believesomething by default. We present a formalization of observations,communication actions, and the attempted jumps to conclusions thatconstitutes default reasoning. To implement these informative actionswe use a general belief revision action which satisfies theAGM postulates; dependent on the credibility of the incominginformation this revision action acts on one or more parts ofthe classified belief sets of the agents. The abilities of agents formalizeboth the limited capacities of agents to acquire information, and the preference of one kind of information acquisition to another. A very important feature of our approach is that it shows how to integratevarious aspects of agency, in particular the (informational) attitudesof dealing with information from observation, communication and defaultreasoning into one coherent framework, both model-theoretically andsyntactically.

We use a framework of modal logic to reason about both defaults and counterfactuals, in which one can express certainties, possibilities, actualities and (preferred or practical) beliefs in a distinct manner.     Notes: Abstract Larvae of the caddisTrichostegia minor (Curtis) were collected from four woodland pools in The Netherlands, three of which are temporary, from August 1986 till June 1987. Eggs and larvae of this species proved to be very well adapted to drought, freezing, strongly fluctuating pH and alkalinity levels and prolonged oxygen deficit. The life cycle ofT.minor in a small woodland marsh overgrown byCalla palustris took one year. Adult flight period started at the end of May. Oviposition took place independent of water. Hatching of the eggs started in September and was probably induced by immersion. During the larval stage from September until May, 5 instars could be distinguished by the size of the head capsule. Growth of instars I, II and III during autumn was moderate. Most larvae overwintered as instar III or IV. Possibly there was a larval diapause during winter. In spring rapid growth to instar V took place prior to pupation. Growth rate, expressed as the increase of mean individual dry weight was highest from March to April (2.05±0.75% DW.m−2.d−1). In extremely shallow water growth in spring was initially more rapid compared to growth in deeper water. During winter the growth rate decreased to 0.038±0.071% DW.m−2.d−1. Net annual production based on the changes of momentary biomass was 183.2±31.7 mg DW.m−2.y−1 or 177.2±31.3 mg AFDW.m−2.y−1. Production loss during the winter season was 75.1±10.8 mg DW.m−2.y−1 or 72.3±10.6 mg AFDW.m−2.y−1.
