Description: The 40 ka caldera-forming eruption of Campi Flegrei (Italy) is the largest known erup- tion in Europe during the last 200 k.y., but little is known about other large eruptions at the volcano prior to a more recent caldera-forming event at 15 ka. At 29 ka a widespread volcanic ash layer, termed the Y-3 tephra, covered 〉150,000 km2 of the Mediterranean. The glass compositions of the layer are consistent with Campi Flegrei being the source, but no prominent proximal equivalent in the appropriate chrono-stratigraphic position had been previously identified. Here we report new glass chemistry data and 40Ar/39Ar ages (29.3 ± 0.7 ka [2σ]) that reveal the near-source Y-3 eruption deposit in a sequence at Ponti Rossi and a nearby borehole (S-19) in Naples. The dispersal and thickness of the deposits associ- ated with this eruption, herein named the Masseria del Monte Tuff, were simulated using a tephra sedimentation model. The model indicates that ~16 km3 dense rock equivalent of the magma erupted was deposited as fall. This volume and the areal distribution suggest that the Masseria del Monte Tuff resulted from a magnitude (M) 6.6 eruption (corresponding to volcanic explosivity index [VEI] 6), similar to the 15 ka caldera-forming Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (M 6.8) eruption at Campi Flegrei. However, the lack of coarse, thick, traceable, near- vent deposit suggests peculiar eruption dynamics. Our reconstruction and modeling of the eruption show the fundamental role that distal tephrostratigraphy can play in constraining the scale and tempo of past activity, especially at highly productive volcanoes.

Notes: Single-axis magnetic suspensions, using optical position sensing and dc electromagnets, have been developed with eight-bit-word digital controllers that replace the familiar analog phase-advance or proportional-plus-derivative circuits. Control algorithms are obtained by a simple curve-fitting approach to signals sampled at constant rates. Stable suspension has been demonstrated at sampling rates down to 75 Hz when the magnet current has series transistor regulation, and at 100 Hz in a thyristor-regulated system.

Notes: A general numerical method is given to extract angular correlations from photodissociation experiments with ion imaging detection. The angular correlations among the transition dipole moment of the parent molecule, μ, the photoproduct recoil velocity, v, and its angular momentum, j, are parametrized analytically using the semiclassical bipolar moment scheme due to Dixon. The method is a forward-convolution scheme which allows quantitative extraction of all measurable bipolar moments and can be applied in experiments with both linearly and circularly polarized probe light. It avoids the cylindrical symmetry limitations of the inverse Abel transform method, traditionally used for extracting photoproduct recoil anisotropy and speed distribution from imaging data. The method presented here also takes into account the possibility of multiple photodissociation channels. The features of the method are illustrated in a two-color 1+1′ REMPI-ion imaging study of the NO photoproduct trajectories resulting from the 650 nm photodissociation of 2-chloro-2-nitrosopropane (CNP). A comparison between experimental and synthetic images is presented for selected experimental geometries. The experimental images for CNP and the results from their fit confirm earlier TOF studies showing that the recoil speed distribution is bimodal with the low and high speed components having average values of approximately 500 and 910 m/s. These components have been previously assigned to dissociation from the S0 and T1 electronic states of the parent molecule, respectively. The experimental results from the current study also confirm that for the high-speed component the product NO velocity vector, v, is preferentially perpendicular to its angular momentum, j [β00(22)=−0.21], and that there is no significant correlation between v and the transition dipole moment μ of the CNP molecule [β02(20)=−0.02]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Recognising that changing culture is the most important role of a leader, the authors provide a diagnostic description of the culture within the nursing directorate of a National Health Service Trust. When the characteristics of the prevailing culture are compared with those associated with one that is ideal, many gaps are identified. In an attempt to address and overcome these gaps, the leaders within the organisation worked with the staff of the nursing directorate and in turn identified that learning and development was a priority if improvements were to be attained. Consequently two innovative development programmes were designed and the necessary steps taken to effect their implementation. The details of the programmes are provided along with the benefits and drawbacks attributed to this particular initiative.
