Notes: As the USA continues to progress toward a service-based economy, therole of the service employee as a contributor to the success of theorganization assumes greater prominence. Examines the pivotal role ofthe field engineer (FE) in a plain paper copier company. Usingqualitative research methodologies, identifies and categorizes theunarticulated strategies used by the field engineers to initiate andmaintain positive customer relationships. FEs using these categories hadpositive relationships with their customers. Moreover, the studyrevealed that successful FEs were granted in-group status with theirsupervisor. Based on these results, suggests several techniques to helporganizations improve the relationships their service employees havewith both customers and superiors.

Notes: There are many instances of documented resistance to computer-basedtechnology. Presents the two most important causes for resistance. Moreover, also presents solutions/techniques to reduce resistance. Thefirst important cause for resistance is based on the notion that, eventhough technical barriers have fallen, some features of computer-basedtechnology are difficult for end-users to learn. The other is based on apersonality profile of the end-user. Offers suggestions to alleviateboth of these sources of resistance.

Notes: The Agricultural Conservation Program (ACP), is undergoing a new, rigorous evaluation to determine its effectiveness in conserving the Nation's agricultural soils and waters.ACP deals with many types of conservation practices, but the focus here is on the evaluation of soil and water related practices. ACP has depended heavily on the State and private forestry services, Soil Conservation Service, and the Cooperative Extension Services, for technical expertise. Thus, the process is an evaluation of the effectiveness of a “team of agencies,” as well as of the program itself. Results of the evaluation have helped to develop new thrusts which have moved ACP further into the position of treating the total conservation problem.Phase I has its limitations. It did not address the impact of wind erosion, water quality, change in productive capacity, soil quality, wildlife habitat, off site and farm income impacts. It does show that ACP has and is doing a very good job in meeting its stated purposes. It is clear that ACP's effectiveness can be improved with more and better advanced planning and more intensive use of soil maps, the USLE, and other scientific tools. ACP is headed in this direction.

Notes: . Oxytricha strains used in biochemical studies have traditionally been grown in unaerated, unagitated culture tubes or Fernbach flasks. These cultures are limited in volume to about one liter and have a very nonuniform distribution of cells, with the majority of the cells at the very top or bottom of the medium. We have found conditions in which Oxytricha can be grown in 50-liter fermentation vats. The cultures grow to a uniform density of about 6000 cells/ml.

Notes: . Heterovesicula cowani, n. g., n. sp., is a dimorphic microsporidium described from the adipose tissue of the Mormon cricket, Anabrus simplex Haldeman. Proliferation of the microsporidium is by karyokinesis of uninucleate and binucleate cells to form binucleate and tetranucleate cells, respectively. These cells will undergo binary fission (merogony). Ultimately, the meronts undergo karyokinesis without subsequent cytokinesis producing spherical multinucleate plasmodia that are transitional to 2 types of sporogony. Transitional to disporoblastic sporogony, a fragile interfacial envelope delaminates from the plasmodium with morphogenesis to a monfiliform plasmodium consisting of fusiform binucleate diplokaryotic sporonts. These undergo karyokinesis to form tetranucleate diplokaryotic sporonts that undergo cytokinesis during disintegration of the plasmodium into isolated binucleate sporonts. Transitional to octosporoblastic sporogony, multinucleate plasmodia disintegrate into short monofiliform plasmodia of diplokaryotic sporonts which then segregate while undergoing gradual nuclear dissociation (haplosis by nuclear dissociation). These undergo two sequences of karyokinesis and subsequent multiple fission to form eight uninucleate (haploid) sporoblasts in a fusiform arrangement within a persistent envelope. Binucleate spores are ovocylindrical, about 5.4 × 1.7 μm (fresh), with an isofilar polar filament singly coiled about 11 turns. Uninucleate spores are ovoid to slightly pyriform, 4.0 × 1.7 μm (fresh), with an isofilar filament singly coiled about 9 turns. A new family, Heterovesculidae, is proposed for the new genus.

Notes: A light and electron microscopic study was conducted of a microsporidium isolated from the grasshopper Pyrgomorpha cognata Krauss, 1877 collected in Santo Antão and Santiago Islands, Cape Verde. The evidence suggests that although there are some differences, such as tissues affected and size of spores, the organism appears conspecific with Nosema pyrgomorphae Toguebaye, Seck & Marchand, 1988, which was described from another species of the genus Pyrgomorpha Audinet-Serville, 1838 in Senegal. However, in addition to the differences in tissue specificity and size of spores, light microscopy studies also revealed some stages of the pathogen (uninucleate bodies and plasmodia) apparently not previously observed in N. pyrgomorphae.
