Description: \xe2\x80\xa2 Premise of the Study: Although many species in the orchid genus Coelogyne are horticulturally popular, hardly anything is known about their pollination. Pollinators of three species were observed in the fi eld in Nepal. This information is urgently needed because many orchid species in Nepal are endangered. Whether the exudates produced by extrafl oral nectaries played a role in protection against herbivory was also investigated. \n\xe2\x80\xa2 Methods: Pollinators of C. fl accida , C. nitida , and Otochilus albus were filmed, captured, and identifi ed. Ant surveys and exclusion experiments were carried out. To investigate whether pollinators are needed for fruit set, plants were wrapped in mesh wire bags. Infl orescence stems were examined with microscopy. Fehling \xe2\x80\x99 s reagent was used to detect sugars in extrafl oral exudates. \n\xe2\x80\xa2 Key Results: Coelogyne fl accida and C. nitida need pollinators to set fruit and are pollinated by wild bees identifi ed as Apiscerana . Otochilus albus was found to be pollinated by Bombus kashmirensis. Extrafl oral nectar was found to be exuded by nectary-modifi ed stomata and contained high amounts of sugars. Different species of ants were observed collecting these exudates. A signifi cant difference was found in damage infl icted by fl ower and leaf-eating beetles between C. nitida plants living in trees with ant nests and those in ant-free trees. \n\xe2\x80\xa2 Conclusions: Floral syndromes include scented and colored trap fl owers without reward to their pollinators. All orchids investigated exude extrafl oral nectar by nectary-modifi ed stomata. This nectar was found to fl ow from the phloem to the stomata through intercellular spaces in the outer parenchymatous layer of the inflorescence.

Description: Check list of the weevils occurring in The Netherlands and adjacent regions (Curculionoidea: Curculionidae, Apionidae, Attelabidae, Urodontidae, Anthribidae and Nemonychidae).\nA new check list of weevils occurring in The Netherlands and adjacent regions is presented. Since the previous list of Brakman (1966) many species were added to the Dutch fauna, some subspecies were raised to specific status and a number of nomenclatorial changes took place. In the present list additions to the Dutch fauna since Brakman (1966) are indicated and nomenclature is updated.

Description: Harmonia axyridis in the Netherlands: a gain for the fauna or an unwanted intruder\n(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)?\nThe coccinellid Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773), a well-known aphid predator originating from\nAsia, was found for the first time in the Netherlands (Heilige Landstichting near Nijmegen) in\n2002. During 2003, the species was collected at several localities in the southern part of the\ncountry. In the surroundings of Tilburg and Rotterdam the species is already considered as\ncommon. Its establishment could be the result of either survival of independently released (or\nescaped) specimens for biological control (very likely for the population in Rotterdam), or a\ncolonisation from Belgium were outbreaks of H. axyridis were recorded in the preceding years\n(likely for the surroundings of Tilburg).\nRisks and regulations with respect to the introduction of exotic species as biological control agents\nof pests in indoor and outdoor cultures are discussed. Recently, regulations have been sharpened in\nthe Netherlands, but they are too late to prevent the establishment of H. axyridis, wanted or not.\nOnce an exotic species has established itself it is virtually impossible to get rid of it.

Description: The weevil genus Larinus in the Netherlands, with Larinus turbinatus as an addition to the\nDutch fauna (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)\nLarinus turbinatus is reported for the Netherlands for the first time. The first record of this\nspecies is from 2004, when one specimen was swept from a chalk grassland in the very south\nof the Netherlands. Since then the species was discovered at several sites. Apart from L. turbinatus\nthe genus Larinus includes two other Dutch species, viz. L. planus and L. sturnus. Data on\nthe Dutch and European distribution and ecology of all three Dutch species are presented.\nA key to the three Dutch species is presented. Many other insect species have recently expanded\ntheir distribution in the Netherlands and some authors think that this may have resulted from\nclimate change. For Larinus turbinatus this explanation seems not to be appropriate since the\nspecies also occurs in more northern regions within Europe, with a cooler climate.

Description: First record of Elaphropus hoemorrhoidales in the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Carabidae) \nOne specimen of Elaphropus hoemorrhoidales was collected in the nature reserve De Blauwe Kamer between Wageningen and Rhenen (province of Utrecht), during an extensive survey, using hundreds of pitfall traps. This species was not recorded before in the Netherlands. Information from literature on the distribution and ecology of E. hoemorrhoidales is presented.
