    Notes: Measurement of two products of a fusion reaction in coincidence is proposed. Possible detector arrays and sample count rates have been evaluated for reactions in the Fontenay-aux-Roses tokamak (TFR) and the Texas experimental tokamak (TEXT) and in the tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) neutral beam lines. The count rates indicate that this method is feasible on existing devices.

    Notes: The 3-MeV protons created by d(d, p)t fusion reactions in a moderately sized tokamak leave the plasma on trajectories determined by the position of their birth and by the poloidal magnetic field. Pitch-angle resolution of the escaping 3-MeV protons can separately resolve the spatial distribution of the d(d, p)t fusion reactions and the poloidal field distribution inside the tokamak. These diagnostic techniques have been demonstrated on PLT with an array of collimated surface barrier detectors.

    Notes: For "beam-target'' fusion reactions, collimated measurements of the energy spectrum of one of the reaction products can provide information on the degree of anisotropy of the reacting beam ions. Analytical expressions relating the fusion spectrum to the velocity distribution of the beam ions are given. Application of the expressions to measurements of the spectrum of 15-MeV protons produced by reactions between energetic 3He ions and relatively cold deuterons during ICRF heating in the PLT tokamak indicate that the velocity distribution of fast 3He ions is peaked perpendicular to the tokamak magnetic field.

    Notes: A new technique using a silicon surface barrier (SSB) diode has been developed for measuring the escaping fast ion flux from a tokamak plasma. Calibration of the detector with an ion beam showed that at a fixed energy the diode's output current varied linearly with the incident deuteron flux. The diode was mounted inside the PDX vacuum vessel with collimating apertures designed to admit the spiraling orbits of 50-keV deuterons expelled from the plasma by MHD instabilities. Results from PDX indicated that relative measurements of the escaping fast ion flux due to several plasma instabilities could be made.

    Notes: One of the neutral-particle spectrometers used on the Doublet III tokamak has been improved and modified for use as an active charge exchange diagnostic on the DIII-D tokamak. The spectrometer employs a He stripping cell, parallel E and B analyzer fields, and a microchannel-plate detector with 60 energy channels for each of two neutral-particle masses. Improvements to the diagnostic include better radio frequency and γ-ray shielding and complete instrumentation of all energy channels. Calibration results for H and D are similar to those reported previously. The instrument views across one of the DIII-D heating beams which can be modulated to provide local neutral doping. The analyzer is scanned shot to shot to measure neutrals with pitch angles between ∼5° and ∼110°.

    Notes: Measurements of fluctuations in the neutron yield are made on the tokamak fusion test reactor (TFTR) with plastic scintillators. Light from the scintillators is coupled through acrylic rods or fiber-optic cables to photomultipliers operated in current mode. Discrimination against hard x rays is accomplished through comparison with the signal from a ZnS(6Li) scintillator. These measurements are useful in studies of deuterium pellet deposition, of the acceleration of beam ions during major radial compression, and of MHD instabilities. Techniques for measuring the neutral beam density profile and Qequivdt using neutron fluctuation measurements during pellet injection also have been proposed.

    Notes: Significant progress has been made in obtaining high-performance discharges for many energy confinement times in the DIII-D tokamak [J. L. Luxon et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion Research (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. I, p. 159]. Normalized performance (measured by the product of βNH89 and indicative of the proximity to both conventional β limits and energy confinement quality, respectively) ∼10 has been sustained for 〉5 τE with qmin〉1.5. These edge localized modes (ELMing) H-mode discharges have β∼5%, which is limited by the onset of resistive wall modes slightly above the ideal no-wall n=1 limit, with approximately 75% of the current driven noninductively. The remaining Ohmic current is localized near the half-radius. The DIII-D electron cyclotron heating system is being upgraded to replace this inductively driven current with localized electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD). Density control, which is required for effective ECCD, has been successfully demonstrated in long-pulse high-performance ELMing H-mode discharges with βNH89∼7 for up to 6.3 s. In plasma shapes compatible with good density control in the present divertor configuration, the achieved βN is somewhat less than that in the high βNH89=10 discharges. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Reliable operation of discharges with negative central magnetic shear has led to significant increases in plasma performance and reactivity in both low confinement, L-mode, and high confinement, H-mode, regimes in the DIII-D tokamak [Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research 1986 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1987), Vol. 1, p. 159]. Using neutral beam injection early in the initial current ramp, a large range of negative shear discharges have been produced with durations lasting up to 3.2 s. The total noninductive current (beam plus bootstrap) ranges from 50% to 80% in these discharges. In the region of shear reversal, significant peaking of the toroidal rotation [fφ(0)∼30–60 kHz] and ion temperature [Ti(0)∼15–22 keV] profiles are observed. In high-power discharges with an L-mode edge, peaked density profiles are also observed. Confinement enhancement factors up to H≡τE/τITER-89P∼2.5 with an L-mode edge, and H∼3.3 in an edge localized mode (ELM)-free H mode, are obtained. Transport analysis shows both ion thermal diffusivity and particle diffusivity to be near or below standard neoclassical values in the core. Large pressure peaking in the L mode leads to high disruptivity with βN≡βT/(I/aB)≤2.3, while broader pressure profiles in the H mode gives low disruptivity with βN≤4.2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An external antenna excites stable eigenmodes in elongated Ohmically heated plasmas in the Joint European Torus (JET) [P.-H. Rebut, R. J. Bickerton, and B. E. Keen, Nucl. Fusion 25, 1011 (1985)]. The frequency of the modes (240−290 kHz) falls in the gap in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) continuum that is produced by ellipticity.
