    Description: According to the theory of plate tectonics, rocks found in the vicinity of mid-ocean ridges - where oceanic plates are created - should be relatively young (at most several Myr old). Here we report the discovery of zircons with ages of about 330 and 1,600 Myr that were drilled from exposed gabbros beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Kane fracture zone (Cannat and ODP Shipboard Scientific Party, 1995; Werner, 1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.153.031.1997; Werner and Pilot, 1997, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.153.018.1997; Pilot et al., 1996). Age determinations were made using the 207Pb/206Pb evaporation method (Kober, 1987, doi:10.1007/BF00375526) and confirmed with conventional U–Pb dating and ion microprobe (SHRIMP) analysis. We suggest two plausible explanations for the origin of these unusually old zircons. During the opening of the Atlantic, sheared crustal material or delaminated continental lithosphere sank into small roll-like circulation cells (Nocolas, 1995; Rabinowicz et al., 1984, doi:10.1016/0012-821X(84)90042-6) that developed in the shallow mantle at each side of the ridge axis and the material was then transported through these cells to the ridge axis. Alternatively, material from the continental crust has been trapped within the Kane fracture zone since the opening of the Atlantic Ocean basin through a series of transform migrations and ridge jumps (Bonatti and Crane, 1982, doi:10.1038/300343a0; Kepezhinskas and Dmitiev, 1992), with portions of this material subsequently migrating down the ridge axis.

    Notes: Summary. We use a version of the Grossman and Hart principal-agent model with 10 actions and 10 states to produce quantitative predictions for executive compensation. Performance incentives derived from the model are compared with the performance incentives of 350 firms chosen from a survey by Michael Jensen and Kevin Murphy. The results suggest both that the model does a reasonable job of explaining the data and that actual incentives are close to the optimal incentives predicted by theory.

    Notes: Abstract. Phosphoamino acid analysis of mouse connexin45 (Cx45) expressed in human HeLa cells revealed that phosphorylation occurred mainly at serine residues, but also on tyrosine and threonine residues. To characterize the role of Cx45 phosphorylation, different serine residues of the serine-rich carboxy terminal region were deleted or exchanged for other amino acids residues. Human HeLa cells deficient in gap junctional intercellular communication were stably transfected with appropriate constructs and analyzed for expression, localization, phosphorylation, formation of functional gap junction channels and degradation of mutant Cx45. After exchange or deletion of nine carboxy terminal serine residues, phosphorylation was decreased by 90%, indicating that these serine residues represented main phosphorylation sites of mouse Cx45. The various serine residues of this region contributed differently to the phosphorylation of Cx45 suggesting a cooperative mechanism for phosphorylation. Substitution of different serine residues for other amino acids did not interfere with correct intracellular trafficking and assembly of functional gap junction channels, as shown by localization of mutant Cx45 at the plasma membrane and by dye transfer to neighboring cells. Truncated Cx45 was also weakly phosphorylated but was trapped in perinuclear locations. Dye transfer of these transfectants was similar as in nontransfected HeLa cells. The half-life of mouse Cx45 protein in HeLa cells was determined as 4.2 hr. Pulse-chase experiments with the different transfectants revealed an increased turnover of Cx45, when one or both of the serine residues at positions 381 and 382 or 384 and 385 were exchanged for other amino acids. The half-life of these mutants was diminished by 50% compared to wild type Cx45.

    Notes: Abstract A study is made of the lateral tunneling between edge channels at the depletion-induced edges of a gated two-dimensional electron system, through a gate-voltage-controlled barrier arising when the donor layer of the heterostructure is partly removed along a fine strip by means of an atomic force microscope. For a sufficiently high barrier the typical current-voltage characteristic is found to be strongly asymmetric, having, in addition to the positive tunneling branch, a negative branch that corresponds to the current overflowing the barrier. It is established that the barrier height depends linearly on both the gate voltage and the magnetic field, and the data are described in terms of electron tunneling between the outermost edge channels.

    Notes: J=2→3, 3→4, 4→5, and 5→6 transitions in the oblate symmetric top molecule cobalt tricarbonyl nitrosyl were measured using a Flygare–Balle type pulsed beam microwave spectrometer. K=0 and K=3 transitions were observed for J=3→4 and 4→5. Hyperfine structure due to 59Co and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling interactions was well resolved. The measured quadrupole coupling strengths are eQqcc (59Co)=35.14(30) MHz and eQqcc (14N)=−1.59(10). Measured rotation and distortion constants are B0=1042.1590(4) MHz and Dj =0.17(8) kHz. The measured B value is 4% smaller than the B value calculated from electron diffraction data. Spin–rotation and a quadrupole distortion term were also obtained for 59Co.

    Notes: Pulsed-beam Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy was used to measure a and b dipole transitions for the N2O–H35Cl, N2O–H37Cl, N2O–D35Cl, and 15NNO–H35Cl van der Waals complexes. The observed transition frequencies were fit to determine the spectroscopic constants A–DK, B, C, DJ, DJK, eQqaa(Cl), and eQqbb(Cl). The structure of the complex appears to be a planar asymmetric top with a centers-of-mass separation Rc.m. ≈ 3.51 A(ring). The angle θ between Rc.m. and the HCl axis is approximately 110°. The angle φ between the N2O axis and Rc.m. is approximately 77°. The structure was fit using a weighted least squares fit to B and C isotopic rotational constants with Rc.m., θ, and φ as the adjustable parameters, and this procedure yielded three local minima with standard deviations less than 5 MHz. Principal axis coordinates for the Cl, H, and terminal N atoms in the complex were determined with single isotopic Kraitchman analysis to aid in the selection of the "best'' structure. In a second structural analysis Rc.m. θ, and φ values were determined from the spectroscopic constants B, C, and eQqaa(Cl). The "best fit'' structure parameters for N2O–HCl are Rc.m. =3.512(2) A(ring), θ =110(9)°, and φ = 77(2)°. Ab initio calculations of N2O–HCl structures using gaussian〈cm;〉86 with MP2 yielded three energetically stable equilibrium conformations. One of the bound structures is very similar to the present experimental vibrationally averaged structure.
