Notes: [Auszug] The number of spots on inoculated leaves ranged from 80 and 200 per leaf. A Thoday respirometer was used for determining oxygen uptake, which was taken as a measure of respiration-rate. Two leaves, of about 1 gm. fresh weight, were placed in each respiratory chamber with the petioles dipped in ...

Notes: Abstract Extensive empirical research has been published on the fermentation of vegetables, but little predictive modeling of the process is available. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of key variables involved in cucumber fermentation and to develop models for predicting the growth of Lactobacillus plantarum in pure and mixed culture fermentations. The growth medium for the studies was cucumber juice. The effects of various concentrations of lactic, acetic, and hydochloric acids and sodium chloride on growth at 30° C were determined in batch culture. Limiting conditions for growth were pH 3.37 (lower limit), 69 mm undissociated lactic acid, 150 mm undissociated acetic acid, or 11.8% NaCl. Acetic acid was stimulatory to growth at low concentrations (up to 40 mm) but inhibitory at higher concentrations. Lactic acid was more inhibitory than acetic acid, whether total or undissociated concentrations were used as the basis of comparison. A predictive equation for specific growth rate was developed, tested, and shown to predict growth of L. plantarum in batch processes reasonably well.

Notes: Summary The effects of oxygen tension and dilution rate on expression and stability of killer toxin chimeric plasmid (pADH-10A) in transformants of wine yeast (Montrachet 522) were investigated using a glucose-limited chemostat culture. Killer toxin activity increased as a function of dilution rate when transformants were grown in N2 or air, but not in 100% O2. Killer transformants grown in the presence of N2 had 2–4 fold and 10–15 fold higher toxin expression than that in the presence of air and 100% O2, respectively. Plasmid stability increased as a function of dilution rate, regardless of the oxygen tension used. However, transformants grown in air gave the highest plasmid stability.

Notes: Summary Specific growth rate models of product-inhibited cell growth exist but are rarely applied to fermentations beyond ethanol and large-scale antibiotic production. The present paper summarizes experimental data and the development of a model for growth of the commercially important bacterium,Lactobacillus plantarum, in cucumber juice. The model provides an excellent correlation of data for the influence on bacterial growth rate of NaCl, protons (H+), and the neutral, inhibitory forms of acetic acid and the fermentation product, lactic acid. The effects of each of the variables are first modeled separately using established functional forms and then combined in the final model formulation.

Notes: Summary Tagged ammonium sulfate was added to wheat in pots at seeding, tillering or ear-emergence. The plants depended on the soil N till tillering. Fertilizer N absorption was mainly during the period from tillering to ear-emergence and was effected by time of application. Fertilizer N enhanced the soil N contribution to the plants. The fertilizer percent utilization ranged from 8 to 31 according to time of its application. The Fried and Dean's ‘A’ values were affected with the time of the fertilizer application.

Notes: Summary AlthoughRhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus niger andRhizoctonia solani could be grown on gum arabic solutions of 1–4% concentrations, yet their growth was poor presumably due to lack of sufficient nitrogen. Gum arabic was found to be a good carbon source when it replaced sucrose in Czapek-Dox medium. The sporulation ofRhizopus was not affected by the presence of gum in the medium, while that ofAspergillus was appreciably affected. The number of sporulating heads was reduced, irregularity in the shape of the head due to variation in the length of spore chains was also noticed. A new medium of pH 5.6 was found satisfactory for fungal growth and could be recommended for soil isolations. Its composition is: 4% gum arabic, 1% peptone, 0.025% sodium chloride and 0.001% ferrous sulphate.

Notes: Abstract To derive meaningful results from a geostatistical study, it is extremely important to establish the relationship between geology and variograms. However, it is not always easy to establish such a relationship, mainly because of the inadequacy of quantitative or qualitative information. Large amounts of reliable well-log porosity data and the detailed geological information from a complex carbonate reservoir located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia provided an ideal case study of the relationships between geology and variograms. The reservoir under consideration is in the form of a gently dipping, elongated anticline and consists of three productive zones which have been subdivided into several lithologically distinct layers. Results, which indicate an excellent match between geology and porosity variograms, are summarized as follows: (1) use of stratigraphic distances resulted in considerable improvement in the behavior of variograms, (2) structurally controlled geometrical anisotropy is the most obvious feature of variograms, and (3) layers consisting of more complex lithologic framework provided variograms with relatively greater nugget variances and shorter ranges. These results provide further insight into geology and form a meaningful basis for estimation and simulation of the reservoir. They also could be used as a general guide in the geostatistical study of similar carbonate reservoirs.
