In: The Geology of the South Shetland Islands
Description / Table of Contents: The renewed volcanic activity at Deception Island appears to be closely associated with the caldera ring fault. In 1967, a submarine eruption created a new island in Telefon Bay and there was a simultaeous eruption at the land centre, 2 km. to the east. In 1969, a 5 km. fissure opened up in the glacier on the western face of Mount Pond. There were numerous vents but the most damaging aspect of the eruption was the liberation of a large volume of glacial melt water. In the 1970 eruption a series of craters built a new ship of land across Telefon Bay, partley destroying the 1967 island. The new ejecta are remarkably variable in composition. They tend to become more basic further away from the site of the 1967 island. At any particular locality later products tend to be slightly more basic than earlier ones. The distinctive Na-rich, K-poor characteristic apparently persists right through the history of Deception Island. Two basalt types are recognized, one rich in alumina and the other rich in iron. However, the high Na : K ratio is especially accentuated in the more differentiated post-caldera rocks, to which the recent eruptives belong. The Deception Island suite differs in several essential aspects from the typical calc-alkali series. These differences may be explained by persistenf loss of volatiles inhibiting the formation of amphibole.

Description: Three sites, drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 167, were chosen for detailed late Pleistocene paleoceanographic studies of intermediate water along the California margin. These sites are Site 1011 (Animal Basin, 31°17'N, 117°38'W, 2033 m water depth, 1600 m sill depth), Site 1012 (East Cortez Basin, 32°17'N, 118°23'W, 1783 m water depth, 1415 m sill depth), and Site 1018 (Guide Seamount, 36°59'N, 123°17'W, 2476 m water depth). Here we present carbon and oxygen isotopic measurements of benthic foraminifers from these three sites. We made 135 measurements from Site 1011, 387 measurements from Site 1012, and 231 measurements from Site 1018. This data report includes an explanation of the methods used to generate these isotopic records and the age models for each site. Detailed paleoceanographic interpretations of the isotopic records are currently under way.

Description: A new geothermometer (TCO2 Flux) is proposed based on soil diffuse CO2 flux and shallow temperature measurements made on areas of steam heated, thermally altered ground above active geothermal systems. This CO2 flux geothermometer is based on a previously reported CO2 geothermometer that was designed for use with fumarole analysis. The new geothermometer provides a valuable additional exploration tool for estimating subsurface temperatures in high-temperature geothermal systems. Mean TCO2 Flux estimates fall within the range of deep drill hole temperatures at Wairakei (New Zealand), Tauhara (New Zealand), Rotokawa (New Zealand), Ohaaki (New Zealand), Reykjanes (Iceland) and Copahue (Argentina). The spatial distribution of geothermometry estimates is consistent with the location of major upflow zones previously reported at the Wairakei and Rotokawa geothermal systems. TCO2 Flux was also evaluated at White Island (New Zealand) and Reporoa (New Zealand), where limited sub-surface data exists. Mode TCO2 Flux at White Island is high (320 C), the highest of the systems considered in this study. However, the geothermometer relies on mineral–water equilibrium in neutral pH reservoir fluids, and would not be reliable in such an active and acidic environment. Mean TCO2 Flux at Reporoa (310 C) is high, which indicates Reporoa has a separate upflow from the nearby Waiotapu geothermal system; an outflow from Waiotapu would not be expected to have such high temperature.
