Notes: The energy crisis, and developments in the phosphorus industry for the economic production of basic products. A general shortage of power has culminated in attempts to switch over from energy intensive to energy-saving processes. This is exemplified with reference to the field of inorganic phosphorus chemistry. Modern recrystallization processes for making wet-processed phosphoric acid, proceed via the calcium sulfate semihydrate stage, and yield crude phosphoric acid in increased concentration. The steam normally required for concentrating the acid is thus saved. Heat of neutralization is utilized for evaporating water, for example, in a TV A process for making ammonium polyphosphate from commercial crude phosphoric acid and ammonia. Economic evaluation data reflect the economy (reduction of costs) of the above processes in comparison with those used heretofore. The purification of wet-processed phosphoric acid by an improved precipitation method - particularly in the intermediates sector - and by modern extraction techniques are described as alternatives to the electro-thermal production of phosphoric acid. A detailed description is given of one such process, where amyl alcohol is used as the solvent.

Description / Table of Contents: An orange yellow substance the phosphorus content of which varies form 87 to 91 per cent is formed by oxidizing phosphorus vapour by atmospheric oxygen in the presence of water vapour. The compositions of the products with the lowest phosphorus content closely correspond to the formula P4nOnHn. Because of its insolubility in all common solvents and the chemical behaviour, the amorphous yellow solid is supposed to consist of a polymeric network of P-atoms to which OH-groups are fixed. When heated to 250-300°C in inert gas atmosphere the substance is decomposed to P(V)-compounds and products similar to red phosphorus. At normal atmosphere conditions it is slowly oxidized to H3PO2, H3PO3, and small amounts of H3PO4. In addition to PH3 and H2, the same hydroxy-acids are formed by treating the substance with cold N NaOH. Complete oxidation is achieved in aqueous suspension by means of hypoiodite yielding among others considerable amounts of the same very slightly soluble alkali“ ts of an acid of lower-valent phosphorus recently described by Blaser

Description / Table of Contents: Elementary white phosphorus directly reacts with chlorine and oxygene in a suitable solvent giving phosphoryl chlorides with the general formula PnO2n-1Cln+2. The composition of the reaction products in relation to the chlorine-oxygen ratio in the presence of excess phosphorus and at a constant phosphorus-chlorine ratio were investigated. According to the conditions employed the reaction can be directed to form only phosphorus oxychloride with a yield of almost 100 per cent or to give mixtures of phosphorus oxychloride and pyrophosphoryl chloride with higher phosphoryl chlorides form wh-ich  -  besides POCl3  -  in particular pure pyrophosphoryl chloride can easily be separated by distillation in vacuo yielding up to 35 per cent (related to the amount of phosphorus used).

Notes: The significance of biotechnology for industrial chemistry. In the next few decades biotechnology will bring about fundamental innovations in the fields of health, nutrition, and agriculture as well as in important branches of industrial production, such as chemistry, which may well be comparable in importance with the present revolutionary technical progress based on electronics. Justification for these forecasts comes mainly from pioneering scientific advances in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology. Particular mention should be made here of the fascinating potential of genetic engineering methods presently undergoing rapid development. However, less spectacular techniques, such as cell fusion and the immobilization of enzymes or whole living cells on polymeric substrates to give manageable, long-lived biocatalysts, will also contribute to this wave of innovation. Some of these new developments are now gaining acceptance in industrial production.

Notes: With the aid of selected examples an overview is given of the development trends in phosphoruscarbon chemistry over the past few years. An attempt is made to demonstrate the relationships between various parameters and properties such as constitution, basicity, substitution by functional groups, reaction behavior etc. of the compounds. In the case of basis compounds containing methylphosphorus groups the state of development of industrially interesting processes is also outlined. In addition, the synthesis of a few bifunctional phosphorus-carbon compounds which can be employed as comonomers in the production of polymers is described.
