Sie entstehen dadurch, da\ seine Wellenfunktion als Linearkombination von entweder zueinder orthogonalen oder nicht orthogonalen Basisfunktionen dargestellt werden kann. Diese Darstellungen bedingen unterschiedlich starke Delokalisierung von Elektronen aus einsamen Elektronenpaaren am Sauerstoff in ein antibindendes Orbital zwischen den Stickstoffatomen. Die nicht orthogonale Darstellung enthÄlt weniger Strukturen von Gewicht, von denen die wichtigste eine kovalente ist und scheinbar die Oktettregel für die Elemente der ersten Periode verletzt. Diese Struktur beschreibt jedoch die NO-Bindung besser als drei kovalente Strukturen, die aus der orthogonalen Darstellung mit wesentlichem Gewicht resultieren.
    Abstract: Résumé Nous représentons le N2O4 par deux jeux alternatifs de structures en composant sa fonction d'onde linéairement de fonctions de base orthogonales au premier cas, non-orthogonales à l'autre. Ces bases impliquent de délocalisations différentes d'électrons de paires libres d'oxygène en dedans d'une orbitale antiliante entre les nitrogènes. Le développement nonorthogonale implique moins de structures importantes; celle à poids maximal est covalente et semble manquer à la règle d'octet pour la première période. Mais elle décrit mieux les liaisons NO que le font trois structures à poids considérable dans le développement orthogonal.
    Notes: Abstract Two alternative sets of valency structures are suggested for N2O4. They arise because its wave function can be expanded as a linear combination of either orthogonal or non-orthogonal basis functions. These bases imply varying amounts of delocalization of oxygen lone-pair electrons into an antibonding orbital between the nitrogen atoms. The non-orthogonal expansion implies fewer significant structures, the most important of which is covalent and apparently violates the octet rule for first row elements. This structure, however, better describes the NO bonds than do three covalent structures which have considerable weight arising from the orthogonal expansion.

    Abstract: Résumé Les énergies (espérances mathématiques de l'énergie) et les poids de diverses structures de valence de N2O4 sont donnés. Certaines structures qui violent apparemment la regle de l'octet ont une basse énergie. Ceci est dû à ce que leurs fonctions d'ondes permettent une forte interaction de résonance entre fonctions d'onde orthogonales qui représentent des structures respectant la regle de l'octet.
    Notes: Abstract The energies (i.e. energy expectation values) and weights of various N2O4 valency structures are reported. Certain structures that apparently violate the octet rule are of low energy. This is because their wave functions allow for considerable resonance interaction between orthogonal wave functions that represent non-octet violating structures.

    Notes: Summary An RFLP-based genetic map of Secale Cereale has provided evidence for multiple evolutionary translocations in the rye genome relative to that of hexaploid wheat. DNA clones which have previously been mapped in wheat indicated that chromosome arms 2RS, 3RL, 4RL, 5RL, 6RS, 6RL, 7RS and 7RL have all been involved in at least one translocation. A possible evolutionary pathway, which accounts for the present day R genome relative to the A, B and D genomes of wheat, is presented. The relevance of these results for strategies designed to transfer useful genes from rye, and probably other related species, to wheat is discussed.

    Notes: Summary An unusual genomic DNA clone, PSR454, was isolated from a partial genomic library of wheat. This sequence is moderately repeated and detects at least 30 related sequences, all located in a tight linkage block on the long arm of chromosome 3B. When used as a RFLP probe, PSR454 detects a high level of polymorphism between wheat varieties that carry the sequence. There is no detectable hybridisation to sequences in one-third of the varieties tested, providing an “on-off” polymorphism that can be detected on dot blots, rather than the more resource-consuming conventional Southern analysis.

    Notes: Summary A map of chromosome 1R of rye was constructed using 16 molecular and biochemical loci. From long arm to short arm, known-function loci were placed in the order: XAdh — XLee — Glu-R1[Sec-3] — XPpdk-1R — XEm-1R-1 — XEm-1R-2 — Centromere — XNor-R1 —Gpi-R1 — XGli-R1 [Sec-1a] along with six anonymous genomic and cDNA clones from wheat. The map, which spans 106 cM with 12 loci clustered in a 15-cM region around the centromere, shows reasonably good agreement with previously published maps for the centromeric region, whereas the XNor-R1 — Gpi-R1 region gives a much larger distance than previously reported.

    Description: Over the last decade, several hundred seals have been equipped with conductivity-temperature-depth sensors in the Southern Ocean for both biological and physical oceanographic studies. A calibrated collection of seal-derived hydrographic data is now available, consisting of more than 165,000 profiles. The value of these hydrographic data within the existing Southern Ocean observing system is demonstrated herein by conducting two state estimation experiments, differing only in the use or not of seal data to constrain the system. Including seal-derived data substantially modifies the estimated surface mixedlayer properties and circulation patterns within and south of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Agreement with independent satellite observations of sea ice concentration is improved, especially along the East Antarctic shelf. Instrumented animals efficiently reduce a critical observational gap, and their contribution to monitoring polar climate variability will continue to grow as data accuracy and spatial coverage increase.

    Description: In the autumn of 1996 the field component of an experiment designed to observe water mass transformation began in the Labrador Sea. Intense observations of ocean convection were taken in the following two winters. The purpose of the experiment was, by a combination of meteorological and oceanographic field observations, laboratory studies, theory, and modeling, to improve understanding of the convective process in the ocean and its representation in models. The dataset that has been gathered far exceeds previous efforts to observe the convective process anywhere in the ocean, both in its scope and range of techniques deployed. Combined with a comprehensive set of meteorological and air-sea flux measurements, it is giving unprecedented insights into the dynamics and thermodynamics of a closely coupled, semienclosed system known to have direct influence on the processes that control global climate.

    Notes: Abstract We used an acoustic tracking system to record under-ice movements of two free-ranging adult male Weddell seals. The two males were unconstrained and interacting with other Weddell seals at a breeding colony in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. We reconstructed three-dimensional paths of 279 dives by these seals. All dives were less than 20-min duration and none were deeper than 220 m. These three-dimensional dive profiles were compared with conventional time-depth dive profiles recorded using microprocessor loggers. We assigned each of the 279 dives to 1 of 6 classes using an existing classification scheme on the basis of the time-depth trace. Within these, two-dimensionally derived, classes the actual three-dimensional dive profiles at times varied profoundly. Additional parameters obtained with the acoustic system, such as bearing and distance travelled between diving and surfacing points, demonstrate that significant, additional, biologically important information can be derived from the three-dimensional data.
