Description / Table of Contents: Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques, Third Edition, offers a thorough grounding in machine learning concepts as well as practical advice on applying machine learning tools and techniques in real-world data mining situations. This highly anticipated third edition of the most acclaimed work on data mining and machine learning will teach you everything you need to know about preparing inputs, interpreting outputs, evaluating results, and the algorithmic methods at the heart of successful data mining. Thorough updates reflect the technical changes and modernizations that have taken place in the field since the last edition, including new material on Data Transformations, Ensemble Learning, Massive Data Sets, Multi-instance Learning, plus a new version of the popular Weka machine learning software developed by the authors. Witten, Frank, and Hall include both tried-and-true techniques of today as well as methods at the leading edge of contemporary research. The book is targeted at information systems practitioners, programmers, consultants, developers, information technology managers, specification writers, data analysts, data modelers, database R&D professionals, data warehouse engineers, data mining professionals. The book will also be useful for professors and students of upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level data mining and machine learning courses who want to incorporate data mining as part of their data management knowledge base and expertise.

Notes: EC legislation on employee participation in multinational companies, previously blocked by the UK, may now be adopted by the other eleven member states under the Maastricht agreement on social policy. This would represent a major political breakthrough, but its industrial relations implications remain uncertain, particularly for UK companies and employees.

Notes: The view that the role of European Works Councils (EWCs) is shaped predominantly by national industrial relations (IR) traditions in the company's country of origin derives largely from the experience of EWCs in companies based in continental Europe. This article argues that a more differentiated approach to the influence of national IR factors on EWCs needs to be developed to take account of the circumstances of companies headquartered in the UK and the US, whose national IR arrangements do not provide a strong institutional model for the EWC and, in the case of US-based companies, where headquarters management has little or no direct involvement in the EWC. Findings from comparative case studies of EWCs in eight UK- and US-based multinationals suggest that their character is shaped by the interplay between ‘country-of-origin’ factors,‘country-of-location’ factors and structural, company-specific considerations.

Notes: Helicases play essential roles in nearly all DNA metabolic transactions and have been implicated in a variety of human genetic disorders. A hallmark of these enzymes is the existence of a set of highly conserved amino acid sequences termed the ‘helicase motifs’ that were hypothesized to be critical for helicase function. These motifs are shared by another group of enzymes involved in chromatin remodelling. Numerous structure–function studies, targeting highly conserved residues within the helicase motifs, have been instrumental in uncovering the functional significance of these regions. Recently, the results of these mutational studies were augmented by the solution of the three-dimensional crystal structure of three different helicases. The structural model for each helicase revealed that the conserved motifs are clustered together, forming a nucleotide-binding pocket and a portion of the nucleic acid binding site. This result is gratifying, as it is consistent with structure–function studies suggesting that all the conserved motifs are involved in the nucleotide hydrolysis reaction. Here, we review helicase structure–function studies in the light of the recent crystal structure reports. The current data support a model for helicase action in which the conserved motifs define an engine that powers the unwinding of duplex nucleic acids, using energy derived from nucleotide hydrolysis and conformational changes that allow the transduction of energy between the nucleotide and nucleic acid binding sites. In addition, this ATP-hydrolysing engine is apparently also associated with proteins involved in chromatin remodelling and provides the energy required to alter protein-DNA structure, rather than duplex DNA or RNA structure.

Notes: A methodology was developed to measure cost of quality failures in two major road projects, largely based upon a work-shadowing method. Shows how the initial data were collected and categorised into definable groups and how the costs were estimated for each of these categories. The findings suggest that, if the projects examined are typical, the cost of failures may be a significant percentage of total costs, and that conventional means of identifying them may not be reliable. Moreover, the costs will not be easy to eradicate without widespread changes in attitudes and norms of behaviour within the industry and improved managerial co-ordination of activities throughout the supply chain.

Notes: [Auszug] The neural tube defects (NTDs) spina bifida and anencephaly are widely prevalent severe birth defects. The mouse mutant curly tail (ct/ct) has served as a model of NTDs for 50 years, even though the responsible genetic defect remained unrecognized. Here we show by gene targeting, mapping and ...

Notes: Abstract Much of the current research on participative decision making focuses on the increasing need for broad-based decision-making systems, on the different outcomes associated with different forms of participation, or on the problems associated with poorly managed participative decision-making systems. This article considers the responsibilities of employees who participate in organizational decision making and the responsibilities of employers who expect to share decision-making tasks. A “Bill of Responsibilities for Employees” and a “Bill of Responsibilities for Employers” are presented. Pitfalls associated with neglecting these responsibilities are discussed.
