Notes: Summary The pattern of seismicity as a function of depth in the world, and the orientation of stress axes of deep and intermediate earthquakes, are explained using viscous fluid models of subducting slabs, with a barrier in the mantle at 670 km. 670 km is the depth of a seismic discontinuity, and also the depth below which earthquakes do not occur. The barrier in the models can be a viscosity increase of an order of magnitude or more, or a chemical discontinuity where vertical velocity is zero. LongN versus depth, whereN is the number of earthquakes, shows (1) a linear decrease to about 250–300 km depth, (2) a minimum near that depth, and (3) an increase thereafter. Stress magnitude in a subducting slab versus depth, for a wide variety of models, shows the same pattern. Since there is some experimental evidence thatN is proportional toe κσ, where κ is a constant and σ is the stress magnitude, the agreement is encouraging. In addition, the models predict down-dip compression in the slab at depths below 400 km. This has been observed in earlier studies of earthquake stress axes, and we have confirmed it via a survey of events occurring since 1977 which have been analysed by moment tensor inversion. At intermediate depths, the models predict an approximate but not precise state of down-dip tension when the slab is dipping. The observations do not show an unambiguous state of down-dip tension at intermediate depths, but in the majority of regions the state of stress is decidedly closer to down-dip tension than it is to down-dip compression. Chemical discontinuities above 670 km, or phase transitions with an elevation of the boundary in the slab, predict, when incorporated into the models, stress peaks which are not mirrored in the profile of seismicity versus depth. Models with an asthenosphere and mesosphere of appropriate viscosity can not only explain the state of stress observed in double Benioff zones, but also yield stress magnitude profiles consistent with observed seismicity. Models where a nonlinear rheology is used are qualitatively consistent with the linear models.

Notes: [Auszug] The Tien Shan, some 2,500km long and 300-500 km wide, forms a typical intracontinental mountain belt, far from either the locus of collision between continents or a subduction zone (Fig. 1), although it is a consequence of the collision between India and the rest of Eurasia. Within the belt, thrust ...

Notes: Far-infrared spectra of a series of un-neutralized and neutralized lightly sulfonated polystyrenes with varying sulfonation levels have been investigated to seek spectroscopic evidence for microphase separation known to control the physical properties of these polymers. Broad, strong absorbance bands, not found in the spectrum of unmodified polystyrene, are observed in the spectra of the sulfonated analogs. The effects on the far-infrared spectra both of sulfonation level and of the mass and charge of the neutralizing cation are discussed in terms of cation motion and the formation of ion-rich domains.

Description / Table of Contents: Effect of Process Parameters in Extrusion on Fatigue BehaviourFatigue test specimens were produced by forward extrusion and subsequent heading from conventional steels, P/M steels and AlMg4.5Mn. The strain, die-opening angle, temperature and in some cases the lubricant were varied. For purpose of comparation in some cases also specimens were prepared by machining. S/N curves or cyclic deformation curves were determined mainly by stress-controlled tests. For all materials the time strength was increased by cold forming whereby the effect of strain was stronger than that of the die-opening angle. The time strength of steel is less increased by warm (semihot) forming than by cold forming. The fatigue strength, however, is not necessarily increased by cold or warm forming. After cold forming the P/M steels contrary to conventional steels revealed mainly quasielastic deformation until fracture. After warm forming, however, P/M steels, due to the decrease of porosity, behaved almost like conventional steels. For AlMg4.5Mn specimens prepared by forming - probably due to worse surface quality - revealed a lower fatigue strength than those prepared by machining. Here also a feasible effect of the choice of the lubricant was stated.

Notes: Integrated-intensity light scattering data are reported for moderately concentrated solutions of polystyrene in benzene and in cyclopentane. The benzene system is one for which the second virial coefficient A2 is large; data obtained over the range 0.5 〈 A2Mc 〈 30, with c the polymer concentration, are analyzed in terms of the (extrapolated) intensity at zero angle and the angular dependence of the intensity. The former is discussed in terms of power law representations based on scaling relations, which are found to represent the data. The latter is discussed in terms of the dependence of the chain dimensions on concentration. With cyclopentane, the behavior is similar for temperatures for which A2 is near its maximum, but for T near either ΘU or ΘL, for which A2 is zero or small, the angular dependence of the scattering is distinctly different, with the intensity exhibiting a maximum as a function of scattering angle.

Notes: Data on the viscosity η of moderately concentrated solutions of polystyrene are reported. Several solvents were investigated, including cyclopentane solutions over a temperature span between θU = 19.5°C and θL = 154.5°C. The data were analyzed in terms of a relation giving η as a function of αϕ2ϕM, where αϕ is the expansion factor for the chain dimensions in a solution with volume fraction ϕ of polymer with molecular weight M. It is shown that values of αϕ so determined decrease as ∂ lnαϕ/∂ lnϕ = (1 - 2μ)/6μ for ϕ greater than ϕ* = 0.2M/s3 for moderately concentrated solutions, where s is the root-mean-square radius of gyration and μ = ∂ ln[η]/∂ lnM with [η] the intrinsic viscosity.
