    Notes: Abstract Sustained-release fertilizer and two kinds of mulch treatments were tested to determine their effects on survival and growth of planted Chamaecyparis thyoides (Atlantic white cedar) on a sandy extremely nutrient-deficient site. Height, basal trunk diameter, dry weight, and concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) were measured for each treatment. After two growing seasons, survival was very high in untreated controls (mean, 86%) and was not significantly increased by any treatment (significance was assessed at p = 0.05 throughout this work). Stem height and cross-sectional area doubled in unamended plots during the course of the study. Fresh mulch alone caused no additional increase in growth, compared with unamended plots. Decomposed mulch caused a slight but significant increase. Sustained-release fertilizer caused significant increases in height (threefold) and dry weight (approximately sixfold). Combined treatment with fertilizer and mulch gave significantly greater growth responses than did other treatments, increasing heights 4- to 5-fold, trunk cross-sectional areas 4-fold, and dry weights 11- to 21-fold over no-treatment controls. Tissue concentrations of N and P correlated with growth trends, with combinations of mulch and timed-release fertilizer providing the highest values. Though statistically different, the two mulch treatments were similar in their effects on tissue nutrient concentrations. When combined with fertilizer, undecomposed mulch stimulated increases in height and dry weight significantly more than did decomposed mulch. Thus, establishment of C. thyoides on low-nutrient sandy soils is improved by combined soil amendment with sustained-release nutrients and organic mulch.

    Notes: Abstract. The analysis of the invasion front of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has revealed a fundamental invasion-associated remodelling of the extracellular matrix as the result of a complex regulated interplay of matrix synthesis and matrix degradation. Cysteine proteinases, in particular cathepsin B, are implicated in tumour invasion in vivo and in vitro and are thought to be important mediators of metastasis. An in situ zymographic assay based on enzyme overlay membranes (EOMs) was established to define the tissue localisation of cathepsin B activity in OSCC. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy we present a double-labelling method for the rapid and reproducible simultaneous detection of cathepsin B-like activity and cellular or extracellular antigens based on an EOM and immunofluorescence technique on frozen sections. Applying this method, cathepsin B-like activity was mainly found in vascular structures within the invasive front of OSCC. Therefore, the results suggest a particular pathogenic role of cathepsin B in tumour angioneogenesis. The method can simply be transferred to other enzymes and can be recommended for more extensive studies of proteolytic activity in human malignancies.

    Description: This data publication includes the DESERVE Earthquake Catalogue of historical and recent earthquakes and the DESERVE Macroseismic Intensity Dataset. The DESERVE Earthquake Catalogue is a catalog of historical earthquakes in the region around the Dead Sea. It was compiled from several sources, including recent events (> Mw 3) for the region between 24.55° and 37.80° N and between 29.95° and 40.80° E. The catalogue includes events that occurred between the year 23 C.E. and 2014 C.E. and their magnitude was harmonized to moment magnitude. Details on how duplicates were removed, which magnitude conversions were applied, about the original data sources and the catalog completeness can be found in Haas et al. (2016). The DESERVE Macroseismic Intensity Data set consists of macroseismic intensity observations for historical earthquakes in the region around the Dead Sea. It was compiled from several sources, including seismic events (Mw 4.2 - 7.9) that occurred between the year 23 C.E. and 1995 C.E for the region between 23.78° and 41.01° N and between 24.81° and 50.16°. Details on the the original sources can be found in Haas et al. (2016). Both datasets are available in csv format and accompanied by explanatory files.

    Description: The Virtual Institute DEad SEa Research Venue DESERVE is a cross-disciplinary and cooperative international project of the Helmholtz Centers KIT, GFZ, and UFZ with well-established partners in the Dead Sea region. The region faces big natural challenges. Among them are sea level decline, desertification, flash floods, ascending brines polluting freshwater, sinkhole development, and the repeated occurrence of earthquakes. Climate change and extensive exploitation of groundwater and surface water even aggravate the situation. These challenges can be only mastered in an interdisciplinary research effort involving all neighbouring countries. DESERVE is offering the unique opportunity to integrate the scientific results already achieved or presently elaborated in the Dead Sea region into a joint scientific approach based on earth, water, and environmental sciences. DESERVE is aimed at studying coupled atmospheric, hydrological, and lithospheric processes, such as sinkholes, flash floods, and earthquakes. This interdisciplinary research approach will contribute to a sound scientific understanding of the ongoing processes. Furthermore, it enables the development of prediction models, remediation strategies, and risk assessments with respect to environmental risk, water availability, and climate change. DESERVE is funded by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers.

    Description: SOFIA will enable astronomical observations with unprecedented angular resolution at infrared wavelengths obscured from the ground. To help open this new chapter in the exploration of the infrared universe, we are building AIRES, an Airborne Infra-Red Echelle Spectrometer. AIRES will be operated as a first generation, general purpose facility instrument by USRA, NASA's prime contractor for SOFIA. AIRES is a long slit spectrograph operating from 17 - 210 microns. In high resolution mode the spectral resolving power is approx. 10(exp 6) microns/A or approx. 10(exp 4) at 100 microns. Unfortunately, since the conference, a low resolution mode with resolving power about 100 times lower has been deleted due to budgetary constraints. AIRES includes a slit viewing camera which operates in broad bands at 18 and 25 microns.

    Description: Far-infrared hydrogen recombination lines H15(alpha)(169.4 micrometers), H12(alpha)(88.8 micrometers), and H10(alpha)(52.5 micrometers) were detected in the peculiar luminous star MWC 349A from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Here it is shown that at least H15(alpha) is strongly amplified, with the probable amplification factor being greater than or about equal to 10(exp 3) and a brightness temperature that is greater than or about equal to 10(exp 7) kelvin. The other two lines also show signs of amplification, although to a lesser degree. Beyond H10(alpha) the amplification apparently vanishes. The newly detected amplified lines fall into the laser wavelength domain. These lasers, as well as the previously detected hydrogen masers may originate in the photoionized circumstellar disk of MWC 349A and constrain the disk's physics and structure.

    Description: The airborne infrared echelle spectrometer (AIRES) was proposed as a facility instrument for the stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy (SOFIA) project. The preliminary AIRES design uses multiple two dimensional detector arrays and a 1.2 m long, 76 deg blaze angle echelle to combine high spectral resolution with diffraction limited imaging in the cross-dispersion direction. A preliminary optical design and the mechanical architecture are presented together with the analysis and prototyping of lightweight aluminum echelles. Instrument efficiencies are calculated and compared for different gratings, and the associated mechanical design tradeoffs are discussed.
