    Notes: Abstract The lack of open literature publication of the distributional properties of the cm-λ spectra of solar microwave bursts has lead to some erroneous concepts of the typical characteristics of these spectra. To provide more accurate information, this paper sets forth various distributions of the peak flux density spectra of large numbers of bursts, based on observations of the Sagamore Hill Radio Observatory at nine discrete frequencies between 245 and 35000 MHz over the years 1968–1971. As a foundation for the distribution studies, the basic spectral classification system is outlined. The majority of burst spectra were found to contain a cm-λ component having a single spectral maximum in the 1400 to 35000 MHz range; such spectra are designated C type. A study of the correlation of the spectral maximum frequency f max of the cm component and the photospheric magnetic field strength of the associated region shows a tendency for greater correlation at higher f max for stronger magnetic sssfields. A study of the correlation for C type spectra between f max and the quasi-cutoff frequency f qc on the low-frequency side shows that for bursts of moderate peak flux density (50–500 sfu) f qc is well correlated with f max; a good fit to the relation f max=A f qc is found with A =3.4. The possible attenuating mechanisms responsible for the spectral shaping of the cm component are discussed.

    Notes: In this paper we describe the development of a model of the electron current collected by solar arrays from the ionospheric plasma. This model will assist spacecraft designers in minimizing the impact of plasma interactions on spacecraft operations as they move to higher-voltage solar arrays. The model was developed by first examining in detail the physical processes of importance and then finding an analytic fit to the results over the parameter range of interest. The analytic model is validated by comparison with flight data from the Photovoltaic Array for Space Power Plus diagnostics (PASP Plus) flight experiment [D. A.     Description: The photovoltaic array space power (PASP)-Plus solar cell flight experiment is described, and the observed performances of different solar cell types during the first six months of their operation, are summarized. The solar cell types include single crystal and amorphous silicon, GaAs, several multijunction cell types, indium phosphide and GaAs/GaSb concentrator cells. The radiation degradation experienced by some of the solar cell types agrees with theoretical predictions. Other samples, including silicon, are degraded less than predicted. Effects, including the increase in temperature of all the experiments and the effect of sun glint on cell measurement, are discussed.

    Description: Various statistical parameters of the peak flux-density spectra of solar microwave bursts have been examined for 1968 to 1971 based on spectra obtained from fixed-frequency observations at 245, 606, 1415, 2695, 4995, 8800, 15400, and 35000 MHz. For bursts having a centimeter-radiation component, the great majority were found to have type C spectra (single spectral maximum) in the L-band to K-band range. A small percentage had miscellaneous type spectra (more than one spectral maximum) and another small percentage had what might be taken as thermal spectra. Even for gradual rise-and-fall bursts often thought to be thermal origin, less than 20 percent were found to have spectra which could be classified as thermal. The relationship between the burst spectral maximum (f sub max) and the photospheric magnetic field strength of the region associated with the burst was examined. A tendency for greater correlation at higher f sub max for stronger magnetic fields is noted; however, this is over-shadowed by the overall high correlations for those regions having strong photospheric magnetic fields.

    Description: The Interactions Measurement Payload for Shuttle (IMPS) consisted of engineering experiments to determine the effects of the space environment on projected Air Force space systems. Measurements by IMPS on a polar-orbit Shuttle flight will lead to detailed knowledge of the interaction of the low-altitude polar-auroral environment on materials, equipment and technologies to be used in future large, high-power space systems. The results from the IMPS measurements will provide direct input to MIL-STD design guidelines and test standards that properly account for space-environment effects.

    Description: With PASP Plus as its primary payload, the APEX satellite was launched by a standard Pegasus rocket released from a NASA B-52 aircraft on 3 August 1994. A 70 deg inclination, 363 km X 2550 km orbit was achieved, allowing both investigation of space plasma effects on high-voltage operation in the perigee region and investigation of space radiation effects on array power output from passage through the inner radiation belt in the apogee region. Data gathering by PASP Plus was begun on 7 Aug 94 and ended on 11 Aug 95. In one year, PASP Plus collected an order of magnitude more data on environmental interactions on solar arrays than all previous space-borne photovoltaic experiments combined. The test arrays flown and the interactions-measuring and space-environment sensors of PASP Plus are described. The results of measurements of leakage current under test-array positive biasing and arc rates under negative biasing as a function of bias voltage, plasma density, array orientation, and other conditions are presented. The results of measurements of test-array power-output degradation caused by space radiation are also examined.
