Notes: A compact electron beam ion trap (WEBIT) working at room temperature without any cryogenic components is described and experimentally investigated. The trap design is based on permanent magnet technology. For the formation of the electron beam a Pierce electron gun equipped with a cathode of high emissivity is used. The ion trap is created by a compressed electron beam passing through a drift tube system consisting of three sections with corresponding electrical trap potentials. X-ray spectra measured with a Si(Li) semiconductor detector indicate the production of Kr34+, Xe44+, Ce48+, Ir64+, and Hg66+ ions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Tomato plants, variety Bonny Best, grown in sand culture in the greenhouse, were inoculated at the seven to eight leaf stage with Fusarium by dipping the roots into a suspension of mycelium and conidia. The compounds to be tested were watered on to sand cultures with the plants in situ, before ...

Notes: Abstract Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) from the S1 state of acetone and 3-pentanone was studied as a function of temperature and pressure using excitation at 248 nm. Additionally, LIF of 3-pentanone was investigated using 277 and 312 nm excitation. Added gases were synthetic air, O2, and N2 respectively, in the range 0–50 bar. At 383 K and for excitation at 248 nm, all the chosen collision partners gave an initial enhancement in fluorescence intensity with added gas pressure. Thereafter, the signal intensity remained constant for N2 but decreased markedly for O2. For synthetic air, only a small decrease occurred beyond 25 bar. At longer excitation wavelengths (277 and 312 nm), the corresponding initial rise in signal with synthetic air pressure was less than that for 248 nm. The temperature dependence of the fluorescence intensity was determined in the range 383–640 K at a constant pressure of 1 bar synthetic air. For 248 nm excitation, a marked fall in the fluorescence signal was observed, whereas for 277 nm excitation the corresponding decrease was only half as strong. By contrast, exciting 3-pentanone at 312 nm, the signal intensity increased markedly in the same temperature range. These results are consistent with the observation of a red shift of the absorption spectra (≈9 nm) over this temperature range. Essentially, the same temperature dependence was obtained at 10 and 20 bar pressure of synthetic air. It is demonstrated that temperatures can be determined from the relative fluorescence intensities following excitation of 3-pentanone at 248 and 312 nm, respectively. This new approach could be of interest as a non-intrusive thermometry method, e.g., for the compression phase in combustion engines.

Notes: Summary Of the compounds tested especially xanthene-9-carboxylic acid [I], applied via the roots (10−4M), strongly affected the morphogenesis of tomato plants. The leaves were deformed, the laminae reduced, the internodes shortened and the growth of axillary buds was stimulated. Geo- and phototropism of wheat and rye seedlings were disturbed. The observed effects are very similar to the influence of the structurally related derivatives of 9-hydroxyfluorenecarboxylic acid-(9) [II], known as “morphactins”.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. The occurrence ofFusarium oxysporum f.vasinfectum in cotton plants has been reduced up to 80% by green-manuring with oats, mustard or broad beans in pot trials. 2. The number of actinomycetes antagonistic against the pathogen increased considerably in the soil by green-manuring. The highest number has been found approximately 4 weeks after the admixture of the plant material to the soil. At the same time the fungistatic potency of the soil also increased considerably. 3. Green-manuring, on the other hand, stimulated the growth and development of cotton plants, independently from the existence of infections. The reasons for this effect are unknown at the present time. 4. Simply adding corresponding amounts of plant material to the soil had about the same effect as the actual green-manuring with plants raised in the same soil. It is concluded that the effect of green-manuring depends exclusively on the addition and subsequent desintegration of plant material and not on the preceding growth of plants in the soil. 5. Of the plants investigated mustard had the most distinct effects in each respect, although it produced the smallest amount of organic matter. Broad beans showed only a moderate and oats the smallest effect. 6. The results are discussed with regard to their practical significance and application.
Notes: Zusammenfassung 1.
