Description: Classical mechanisms of volcanic eruptions mostly involve pressure buildup and magma ascent towards the surface1. Such processes produce geophysical and geochemical signals that may be detected and interpreted as eruption precursors1-3. On 22 May 2021, Mount Nyiragongo (Democratic Republic of the Congo), an open-vent volcano with a persistent lava lake perched within its summit crater, shook up this interpretation by producing an approximately six-hour-long flank eruption without apparent precursors, followed-rather than preceded-by lateral magma motion into the crust. Here we show that this reversed sequence was most likely initiated by a rupture of the edifice, producing deadly lava flows and triggering a voluminous 25-km-long dyke intrusion. The dyke propagated southwards at very shallow depth (less than 500 m) underneath the cities of Goma (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Gisenyi (Rwanda), as well as Lake Kivu. This volcanic crisis raises new questions about the mechanisms controlling such eruptions and the possibility of facing substantially more hazardous events, such as effusions within densely urbanized areas, phreato-magmatism or a limnic eruption from the gas-rich Lake Kivu. It also more generally highlights the challenges faced with open-vent volcanoes for monitoring, early detection and risk management when a significant volume of magma is stored close to the surface.

Notes: Abstract Manganese-bearing occurrences of the Blafo-Guéto hills are present in quartzites and sericite schists with associated rhyolites, belonging to a Birrimian volcanic-sedimentary series. An initial assemblage made up of magnetite, pyrophanite and locally ottrelite and garnet is affected by a subsequent epigenetic mineralization in form of an impregnation of iron and manganese oxides (mainly goethite, cryptomelane and nsutite). Only in the materials associated with two different landsurfaces, the weathering produced important and significant alterations. The first surface is represented by small bauxitised remnants at the top of the hills; enriched ore is then associated with kaolinite and gibbsite. The second surface is a piedmont pediment where a ferruginous crust contains low-grade manganese mineralization.

Notes: Abstract The wet tropical weathering of Precambrian spessartite quartzites leads to the formation of secondary oxidized ores. These ores result from different successions of superimposed elementary processes, among them: garnet hydrolysis: Mn, Ca, and Fe are leached, and only an amorphous, silicoaluminous phase remains. lithiophorite neoformation: Added manganese combines with alumina of the amorphous, Si-Al products. leaching: Voids appear in the central part of the weathered garnets. They may widen, leaving only the quartz matrix with polyhedric voids. epigenic replacement: The quartz is replaced by cryptomelane, while the garnets may remain unweathered. The various ore types are characterized by the sequence of transformations and by the volumes that each transformation affects. These transformations are old because they are observed not only in situ ores but also in removed detrital ores. In the same way the major part of the accumulated stocks of oxidized ores must be old.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les paragenèses résultant de l'enrichissement supergène de trois gisements manganésifères ouest-africains, d'origine précambrienne, diffèrent selon la nature des minéraux primaires.
Notes: Abstract The paragenesis resulting from supergene enrichment of three precambrian, west african, manganese deposits differ according to the nature of primary minerals. They do not differ with respect to present geographical and climatic environment in spite of their great diversity. The transformation of protores of the interstratified lenses commences with the appearance of transitory minerals: lithiophorite issued from garnets, manganite or birnesite issued from carbonates and often relayed by pyrolusite. Followed by stable oxides: cryptomelane, nsutite, ramsdelite. This last one is a major component of durricrust ores (formed by secondary precipitation of manganese in soils). It represents the final stage of supergene evolution. In interstratified lenses, as well as in durricrusts, pyrolusite appears instable.
