Abstract In this paper the pressing process of polycrystalline MgO was studied using an EPR method. The EPR data showed that the process for particle deformations starts at a rather low pressing pressure (0.5 GPa). When pressing brittle and semibrittle materials one has to take into account the process of particle fracture.
