    Abstract: This book presents an in-depth review of El Hierro Island, the youngest and most southwesterly volcano of the Canary Islands. In October 2011, a submarine eruption started offshore El Hierro Island. The 2011–2012 El Hierro eruption has probably been the best monitored and studied submarine eruption to date and has sparked interest in the study of this young ocean island volcano. During the last decade, multidisciplinary investigations, e.g., on the geological and volcanological character of its past and latest onshore and offshore eruptions, the geophysical and geochemical signatures of its magmatic plumbing system structure and dynamics, as well as the bio-geophysical interactions and consequences of submarine eruptions in the ocean, have been conducted. This book provides an authoritative review of many of these scientific advances as well as multiple remaining unknowns for the study of El Hierro Island and its 2011–2012 submarine eruption. Such knowledge should be of great interest to specialists not only in the Canary Islands volcanism but also in similar ocean island intraplate volcanoes.

    Description / Table of Contents: During the last decades, the monitoring and modelling of various geodynamic processes have gained ever increasing importance. In particular, temporal variations of the deformation and gravity fields recorded by new types of geodetic measuring techniques and reflecting isostatic, tectonic or volcanic processes in the earth's interior as well as climatologically induced changes on its surface have opened new avenues. The present volume succeeds a similar topical volume published in 2007 and reflects the most recent developments in these fields of research. Part of the papers in this book were presented at the second workshop on 'Deformation and Gravity Change: Indicators of Isostasy, Tectonics, Volcanism and Climate Change' that took place at the Casa de los Volcanes on Lanzarote, Spain, during March 27-30, 2007. It was jointly organized and supported by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and the Cabildo Insular de Lanzarote. The workshop also served as the second meeting of the members of the IAG Working Group ICCT2 on 'Dynamic Theories of Deformation and Gravity Fields'.

    Description / Table of Contents: Geodynamic and natural hazards processes produce among other effects deformation and gravity changes which can be measured, using space and ground-based techniques. It is widely recognized that obtaining high temporal rate and high spatial resolution data over wide areas could enhance our mapping capability of such hazardous processes. However, it is also necessary to develop new mathematical (analytical and/or numerical) models and methods for a correct interpretation and, eventually forecast. This book is dedicated to the description of theoretical models, inversion techniques and their application to observational geodetic and geophysical data sets in active geodynamic areas and affected by natural hazards. This book compiles part of the papers presented at the 15th Annual conference of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences held in Madrid, Spain during September 2-6, 2013. This conference had the special topic of “Mathematics of the Planet Earth” emphasizing the recent importance of modelling in our understanding of Geoscience problems. In this regard, the session XIII “Deformation modelling, Geodynamics and Natural Hazards” served to discuss modelling and observational works of structural and deformation processes (e.g., geodesy, seismology) relevant to the study of Geodynamics and Natural Hazards.

    Notes: Abstract Honda saline lake is located in an endorheic basin in the south of Spain. The lake is very shallow, with frequent seasonal drought and a high degree of unpredictability. It was sampled monthly during a relatively dry year (1994–1995, 5 months permanence). To establish a relationship between environmental variables (temperature, depth, salinity and conductivity), variables related to biological activity (organic matter, total solids suspension, and pH) and the planktonic community in the sampled months, various uni- and multivariate statistical methods were carried out. Dunaliella salina, D. viridis, and ciliates sp. 2 is the principal species group used to average out the dissimilarity between the samples. Multivariate analysis showed that salinity (as TDS), conductivity and pH made major and significant contributions to the explanation of the variance in the sample data.

    Notes: Abstract Thirteen species of the genus Herpyllobius Steenstrup & Lütken, 1861 are known to date. In this paper two new species are described as Herpyllobius polarsterni, and H. stocki. A comparison with congeneric species is made. A new find of H. antarcticus is recorded, and the description of Vanhöffen is confirmed. Including the present record, 15 species of Herpyllobius are now known, of which 7 have been reported from the southern hemisphere.

    Notes: Abstract Sphaeralcyon weddellensis gen. nov. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from three colonies collected in the eastern Weddell Sea on the Polarstern cruises ANT V/3 and ANT VI/3. The new genus is compared with three closely related alcyoniid genera, all having capitate or mushroom-shaped colonies and dimorphic polyps. Sphaeralcyon is readily distinguishable from Malacacanthus by the presence of sclerites (absent in the latter genus), and from Anthomastus by sclerite shape, mainly in the form of tuberculate spheroids, and by the horny periderm on the stalk (absent in Anthomastus). Sphaeralcyon also differs from Verseveldtia in the set of sclerites, which are elongate spiny rods and a different type of tuberculate spheroid, and in the presence of eight-points as anthocodial armature (absent in Verseveldtia). The discovery of this new genus lends further support to the notion that diversity in benthic communities in Antarctica is higher than suggested by previous studies.

    Notes: Abstract  The Gammaridea fauna of Algeciras Bay, located on the Mediterranean side of the Strait of Gibraltar, was studied with regard to the species composition, distribution and ecology. Of the 116 species identified, 13 are recorded for the first time along the Iberian Peninsula coast, 30 for the Spanish coast and 78 for the Andalusian coast. Two species, Apherusa bispinosa (Bate 1857) and Idunella nana (Schiecke 1973), were collected for the second time in the Mediterranean Sea; this represents the first record of I. nana since its original description. The abundances of the various species and their distribution in terms of bathymetry and type of substrate were analysed, as was the enlargement of the distributional range of some species in the Mediterranean Sea. With regard to biogeographical distribution, Algeciras Bay can be considered a typical Mediterranean locality despite being situated in the Strait of Gibraltar. This is in agreement with previous studies on the amphipod fauna of the Portuguese coast.

    Notes: Abstract A new species, Ascidioxynus ibericus, is compared with the three previously known species in the genus. This is the first report of this genus in European temperate waters. The characteristic features of A. ibericus are: the genital double-somite broadest at the anterior region, the rostrum rounded, the maxilliped with an unarmed well developed third segment, and the free segment of leg 5 trapezoidal, narrow at its base and increasing in width distally. The diagnosis of the genus is slightly modified to include the variability in the structure of the maxilliped shown by the female in species of Ascidioxynus.
