    Notes: : Water supplies in Arizona are becoming increasingly limited because municipal, industrial, and agricultural consumption depletes ground water reserves by three million acre-feet annually.Additional demands are being created by electric power generation, particularly in northeastern Arizona where ground water pumpage is expected to escalate by sixfold during the next 10 years. The results of a study to determine the ease and feasibility of using satellite imagery as a tool in exploring for new sources of ground water are reported. Lineaments detected on Landsat images of two sites were mapped and correlated with well data in the two study areas by means of well centered grid model. The correlations developed between lineament density and water well data in the two study sites support the hypothesis that a relationship exists between regional geologic structure and the presence of ground water.

    Notes: The geostatistical method of kriging is applied for the analysis, estimation and mapping of earthquake ground motion. No modification to this method was required for this new application. Along with kriging, the concept of the semi-variogram is introduced and shown to be important for estimation and mapping. In geostatistical analyses of earthquake ground motion the ground motion is modelled by a random function. This random function model is shown to be accurate for providing estimates of earthquake ground motion at unsampled locations. Kriging is applied in this paper for the mapping of peak horizontal acceleration recorded during the 1971 San Fernando, and the 1983 Coalinga, California earthquakes. These results are compared to maps predicted using attenuation expressions and differences are analysed. Results demonstrate the utility of kriging for the analysis of earthquake ground motion.

    Notes: Abstract CENP-B is a centromere associated protein originally identified in human cells as an 80 kDa autoantigen recognized by sera from patients with anti-centromere antibodies (ACA). Recent evidence indicates that CENP-B interacts with centromeric heterochromatin in human chromosomes and may bind to a specific subset of human alphoid satellite DNA. CENP-B has not been unambiguously identified in non-primates and could, in principal, be a primate-specific alphoid DNA binding protein. In this work, a human genomic DNA segment containing the CENP-B gene was isolated and subjected to DNA sequence analysis. In vitro expression identified the site for translation initiation of CENP-B, demonstrating that it is encoded by an intronless open reading frame (ORF) in human DNA. A homologous mouse gene was also isolated and characterized. It was found to possess a high degree of homology with the human gene, containing an intronless ORF coding for a 599 residue polypeptide with 96% sequence similarity to human CENP-B. 5′ and 3′ flanking and untranslated sequences were conserved at a level of 94.6% and 82.7%, respectively, suggesting that the regulatory properties of CENP-B may be conserved as well. CENP-B mRNA was detected in mouse cells and tissues and an immunoreactive nuclear protein identical in size to human CENP-B was detected in mouse 3T3 cells using human ACA. Analysis of the sequence of CENP-B revealed a segment of significant similarity to a DNA binding motif identified for the helix-loop-helix (HLH) family of DNA binding proteins. These data demonstrate that CENP-B is a highly conserved mammalian protein that may be a member of the HLH protein family and suggest that it plays a role in a conserved aspect of centromere structure or function.

    Notes: Abstract We have determined the nucleotide sequence of two small circular DNA plasmids, pCf1 and pCf2 [22], from the marine diatom Cylindrotheca fusiformis. pCf1 is 4273 bp, and pCf2 is 4079 bp in size. In each plasmid, all of the major open reading frames (ORFs) are encoded on the same DNA strand. Two ORFs are similar, comparing the two plasmids. ORF218 (pCf1) and ORF217 (pCf2) share 80% amino acid identity and ORF482 (pCf1) and ORF484 (pCf2) share 54% amino acid identity. ORF218/217 shows significant similarity (28–31% amino acid identity) to the Tn3 class of resolvases. Resolvases are most commonly found in bacterial transposons. However, two other features found in the Tn3 class of transposon are missing in the plasmids; an ORF encoding a transposase and terminal inverted repeat sequences. This, and data mapping the portions of the plasmids that hybridize to genomic chloroplast DNA, suggest that the plasmids do not contain active transposons. By analogy with the R46 plasmid from Enterobacter [5, 6], another potential role for the resolvases encoded by pCf1 and pCf2 is the conversion of multimeric forms of the plasmid to monomers. The similarity of ORF218/217 to resolvases documents the first identification of a potential coding function in an algal plasmid.

    Notes: Summary The severity of damage to Mexico City as a result of the 19 September 1985 Michoacan earthquake was unusual given the city's distance (350 km) from the zone of seismic energy release. To explain the damage many authors have suggested that unusual source or transmission path characteristics contributed to enhanced ground motion in Mexico City. The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of results obtained from data recorded during the earthquake related to possible anomalous source characteristics. It is concluded that although the Michoacan earthquake was a large earthquake indeed, in terms of energy output, spectral content, geometry and source mechanics it was not remarkable or anomalous relative to other subduction zone earthquakes in Mexico or elsewhere. In fact the future may well see a larger earthquake generated along the Guerrero seismic gap which is significantly closer to Mexico City.

It is concluded that in every respect this earthquake conformed to the norms set by previous subduction zone earthquakes within the Middle American trench. It appears likely that conditions within the Valley of Mexico are adequate to explain the unusually severe ground shaking without invoking unusual source or transmission characteristics.

    Notes: Abstract For earthquake ground motion studies, the actual ground motion distribution should be reproduced as accurately as possible. For optimal estimation of ground motion, kriging has been shown to provide accurate estimates. Although kriging is accurate for this application, some estimates it provides are underestimates. This has dire consequences for subsequent design for earthquake resistance. Kriging does not provide enough information to allow an analysis of each estimate for underestimation. For such an application, disjunctive kriging is better applied. This advanced technique quantifies the probability that an estimate equals or exceeds particular levels of ground motion. Furthermore, disjunctive kriging can provide improved estimation accuracy when applied for local estimation of ground motion.

    Notes: Abstract Earthquake ground motion is a spatial phenomenon associated with local random behavior and global attenuation away from a source. By this description, ground motion is a regionalized variable. Analyses of directional variograms for earthquake ground motion reveal ansiotropic attenuation. For some earthquakes, a spatial structure exists in all directions and an average variogram can be developed. For other earthquakes, either a spatial structure can be identified only for restricted directions, or a spatial structure cannot be found to exist in any direction. A valid application of regionalized variables theory to the spatial analysis of earthquake ground motion must therefore be predicated on an initial, exhaustive analysis of estimated variograms. To estimate these data, an application of ordinary kriging is preferable to other more complex regionalized variables techniques to simplify the spatial analysis of earthquake ground motion.
