Notes: An integer multiple objective non-linear mathematical programming formulation is developed for simultaneously forming part/machine cells. In the proposed model, generic capability units which are termed as resource elements are used to define the processing requirements of parts and processing capabilities of machine tools. Machine capabilities are not generally taken into account in the previous cell formation procedures. Explicit consideration of unique and overlapping machine capabilities can result in better manufacturing cell designs with higher utilisation levels and less machine duplication. The proposed cell formation model has distinguishing features. Several important cell formation objectives, such as minimisation of part dissimilarity (based on production requirements and processing sequences of parts) in formed cells, minimisation of cell load imbalance, and minimisation of extra capacity requirements for cell formation, are considered. In order to solve the mathematical programming model, a simulated annealing algorithm is developed. Cooperative game theoretic approach is applied for evaluating multiple objectives.

Notes: Purpose - This paper discusses research on machining and repairing of turbomachinery components which are generally complex geometries and made up of difficult to machine materials (nickel super alloys or titanium alloys). Design/methodology/approach - The approaches, methods and methodologies used for machining and repairing of blades are reviewed as well as the comparisons between them are made. Findings - Particularly, the most recent blade machining and repair techniques using high flexible machine tools and industrial robots, are mentioned. Practical implications - The limitation of the approaches, methods and methodologies are given and supported by real practical application examples. Originality/value - This paper presents a state of the art review of research in machining and repairing of turbomachinery components, which have been mainly done in the last decade. The paper act as a reference, gathering the works about turbomachinery components from a manufacturing point of view.

Notes: Purpose - The aim of the paper is to provide an economically viable solution for the blade repair process. There is a continual increase in the repair market, which requires an increased level of specialised technology to reduce the repair cost and to increase productivity of the process.Design/methodology/approach - This paper introduces the aerospace component defects to be repaired. Current repair technologies including building-up and machining technology are reviewed. Through the analysis of these available technologies, this paper proposes an integrated repair strategy through information integration and processes concentration.Findings - Provides detailed description and discussion for the repair system, including 3D digitising system, repair inspection, reverse engineering-based polygonal modelling, and adaptive laser cladding and adaptive machining process.Originality/value - This paper describes a 3D non-contact measurement-based repair integration system, and provides a solution to create an individual blade-oriented nominal model to achieve adaptive repair process (laser cladding/machining) and automated inspection.

Notes: Heart rate telemetry records of up to 5 days duration were obtained from pike living in Lochs Kinord and Davan, Scotland. Applying metabolic rate correlations it was found that mean metabolic rate (R) was 1.5 times standard metabolic rate (Ra), The fish rarely worked near their metabolic limits. Activity metabolism (Ra) was much higher than estimates based on mean swimming speed and comprised up to 10% of R. Most activity metabolism was the result of localized bursts of activity. Less than 10% of activity showed evidence of oxygen debt. Specific Dynamic Action or feeding metabolism (Rf) comprised 15–25% of R. Food intake estimated from heart rate was 1.5% wet body weight day−1, consumed in the form of small items captured during the day and digested during the afternoon and night.

Notes: The decomposition of production facilities into efficient cells is one of the areas attracting increasing research attention due to the performance benefits which cellular manufacturing offers. One of the problems associated with cell formation is the restrictive character of the existing task formalization models resulting in most cases from the use of single machine tool routeings in representing the component requirements. In contrast, the industrial reality provides a more complex picture with multiple choice of processing routeings in terms of available machine alternatives which need to be considered in order to achieve an "optimum" cellular decomposition of manufacturing facilities. Presents a facility decomposition approach based on multiple choice of processing alternatives for each component. The decision making is based on a generic description of the component processing routeings using unique machine capability patterns - "resource elements". Manufacturing cells are formed using concurrent fuzzy clustering methodology and a validation procedure for selection of the "optimum" facility partition.

Notes: In this paper manufacturing responsiveness is related to the ability of manufacturing systems to utilise its existing resources to make a rapid and balanced response to the predictable and unpredictable changes. Better understanding of the inherent (hidden) flexibility that exists within a manufacturing system can therefore lead to significant improvement in system performance and responsiveness. In the reported research a conceptual framework for representing the capabilities of machine tools and machining facilities using generic capabilities units termed "resource elements" is presented as well as a mathematical basis of calculating the manufacturing system flexibility using the resource elements. Simulations are used to examine manufacturing system performance and compare resource element-based scheduling with conventional machine-based approaches. The results show that significant improvements in system performance and the system's ability to cope with disturbances can be achieved if manufacturing facilities are represented and scheduled based on the resource elements concept.

Notes: Grinding burn is a common phenomenon of thermal damage that has been one of themain constraints in grinding in respect of high efficiency and quality. Use of acoustic emission technique for identifying grinding burn was reported before. However, the AE features of grinding burn are relatively weak and easily merged by other AE sources. This paper presents an investigation of the AE features of the thermal expansion induced by laser irradiation, which was designed to simulate grinding thermal behaviour. By means of the wavelet packet transforms, AE features at the grinding burn temperature can successfully be extracted without other mechanicalinterferential factors. These clean features can provide a firm foundation for analysing the real grinding burn AE features and for monitoring grinding burn
