Description: This paper reviews the role of modern fish aggregation devices (FADs) in fisheries. The types and principles of FAD application were discussed. Factors influencing fish aggregation (like species type, etc); classification of fish aggregation; and reasons for aggregative behaviour of fish, were also highlighted. Furthermore, use of durable materials and echo-sounders were observed to be common with modern FADs, with high fuel efficiency, longer life span, as some benefits. This paper therefore emphasizes the need for proper study of issues like the biology of aggregation, and the relationship between catch and effort to discourage system or resources abuse, like overfishing, among others.
