    Notes: The Pinos terrane (Isle of Pines, W Cuba) is a coherent metamorphic complex that probably represents a portion of the continental margin of the Yucatan Block during the Mesozoic. Within the framework of other metamorphic terranes in the Greater Antilles, the Pinos terrane is characterized by the occurrence of high-grade kyanite-, sillimanite- and andalusite-bearing metapelites and migmatites. Assessment and modelling of phase relations in these high grade rocks indicate that they reached a peak temperature of c. 750 °C at 11–12 kbar, and then underwent strong decompression to c. 3 kbar at c. 600 °C. Decompression was contemporaneous with the main synmetamorphic deformation in the area (D2), and was accompanied by segregation of trondhjemitic partial melts formed by wet melting of metapelites. Metamorphism terminated in the Uppermost Cretaceous (68 ± 2 Ma; 40Ar/39Ar dates on biotite and muscovite). The P–T–t-deformation relations of the high-grade rocks suggest that crustal thickening (during collision of this portion of the Yucatan margin with the Great Volcanic Arc of the Caribbean?) was followed by decompression interpreted to reflect exhumation by extension, possibly related to the initial development of the Yucatan Basin in the uppermost Cretaceous.

    Notes: Exotic blocks of eclogite from distant localities along the Northern Serpentinite Melange of Cuba have comparable P–T histories that include high-pressure prograde sections (450–600 °C, 〉15 kbar) associated with subduction of oceanic lithosphere, and retrograde sections within the albite–epidote amphibolite facies (〈500 °C, 〈10 kbar) related to melange uplift. 40Ar/39Ar and Rb/Sr cooling ages (118–103 Ma) of one of the blocks indicate pre-Aptian subduction and Aptian–Albian uplift. Detailed X-ray imaging and profiling further reveals that minerals in these eclogite blocks (notably garnet and amphibole) display subtle but well defined oscillatory zoning that developed along the prograde trajectory of the rocks, previous to attainment of peak eclogitic conditions. The chemistry (e.g. coupled changes of Mg# and Mn in garnet, and of Si, Ti, Al and Na in amphibole) and geometry (euhedral to anhedral shapes) of the oscillations can be interpreted in terms of subtle fluctuations in P–T during the general prograde subduction-related metamorphic path. A (near-) equilibrium model is presented for the formation of oscillations at near peak conditions by means of recurrent dissolution-growth reaction processes. This model for near-peak conditions, and the chemical signatures of earlier oscillations (notably in amphibole), suggest that episodes of retrogression (upward movement?) affected parts of the subducting slab. It is proposed that these retrograde episodes record the tectonic rupture of the subducting slab and, probably, of the upper plate mantle, either due to the intrinsic dynamic behaviour of subduction systems or to the effects of the plate-tectonic rearrangement of the Caribbean region during the Early Cretaceous.

    Notes: High-pressure (HP) metabasites from the Sancti Spiritus dome (Escambray massif, Central Cuba) have been studied in order to better understand the origin and evolution of the Northern Caribbean boundary plate during the Cretaceous, in a global subduction context. Geochemical and petrological studies of these eclogites reveal two groups with contrasting origins and pre-subduction metamorphic histories. Eclogites collected from exotic blocks within serpentinite (mélange zone) originated from a N-MORB type protolith, do not record pre-eclogitic metamorphic history. Conversely eclogites intercalated in Jurassic metasedimentary rocks (non-mélange zone) have a calc-alkaline arc-like origin and yield evidence for a pre-subduction metamorphic event in the amphibolite facies. However, all the studied Escambray eclogites underwent the same eclogitic peak (around 600 °C at 16 kbar), and followed a cold thermal gradient during their exhumation (estimated at around 13.5 °C km−1), which can suggest that this exhumation was coeval with subduction. Concordant geochronological data (Rb/Sr and Ar/Ar) support that the main exhumation of HP/LT rocks from the Sancti Spiritus dome occurred at 70 Ma by top to SW thrusting. The retrograde trajectory of these rocks suggests that the north-east subduction of the Farallon plate continued after 70 Ma. The set-off to the exhumation can be correlated with the beginning of the collision between the Bahamas platform and the Cretaceous island arc that induced a change of the subduction kinematics. The contrasting origin and ante-subduction history of the analysed samples imply that the Escambray massif consists of different geological units that evolved in different environments before their amalgamation during exhumation to form the present unit III of the massif.

    Notes: Abstract Medium grade metapelites of the Torrox unit (Betic-Rif Belt, S Spain) contain mineral assemblages consisting of garnet (Grt), staurolite (St), cordierite (Crd), biotite, kyanite, sillimanite, andalusite, muscovite (Ms) and quartz (Qtz) and record complex reaction processes of cordierite growth through garnet and staurolite decomposition. The reaction textures, the chemical composition of the reactant and product phases, including Fe-Mg-Mn partitioning, and the results of equilibrium thermodynamic calculations indicate that these cordierite-bearing assemblages are largely deviated from equilibrium. Furthermore, the actual cordierite-forming reactions, as estimated from the assemblage and associated textures, conflict with the predictions of thermodynamically based petrogenetic grids for the model pelite system KFMASH, either those that predict the stable coexistence of cordierite + muscovite plus garnet or staurolite or those that do not foresee a field of stability for these types of assemblages. This conflict is explained in terms of cordierite growth (at ca. 575 °C and 2.5 kbar) through metastable reactions whose operation was conditioned by the relict persistence of higher pressure phases (garnet and staurolite) and phase compositions (e.g. muscovite and biotite) after fast decompression. This interpretation militates against the existence of a wide P-T range of stable coexistence at low P of Crd + Ms + Qtz ± Grt ± St in medium grade metapelites of normal composition (i.e. poor in Zn and/or Mn). The triggering of metastable cordierite-forming reactions and the preservation of even subtle disequilibrium features associated to them indicate that the rocks underwent fast near-isothermal decompression from ca. 12 kbar down to 2–3 kbar, then rapid cooling. These inferences agree with independent evidence indicating that termination of alpine metamorphism in the western Betic-Rif Belt was related to the extensional collapse of thickened crust and that the latter had consisted of a single, continuous event.

    Description: A Late Palaeozoic accretionary prism, formed at the southwestern margin of Gondwana from Early Carboniferous to Late Triassic, comprises the Coastal Accretionary Complex of central Chile (34º−41º S). This fossil accretionary system is made up of two parallel contemporaneous metamorphic belts: a high pressure/low temperature belt (HP/LT – Western Series) and a low pressure/high temperature belt (LP/HT – Eastern Series). However, the timing of deformation events associated with the growth of the accretionary prism (successive frontal accretion and basal underplating) and the development of the LP/HT metamorphism in the shallower levels of the wedge are not continuously observed along this paired metamorphic belt, suggesting the former existence of local perturbations in the subduction regime. In the Pichilemu region, a well-preserved segment of the paired metamorphic belt allows a first order correlation between the metamorphic and deformational evolution of the deep accreted slices of oceanic crust (blueschists and HP greenschists from the Western Series) and deformation at the shallower levels of the wedge (the Eastern Series). LP/HT mineral assemblages grew in response to arc-related granitic intrusions, and porphyroblasts constitute time markers recording the evolution of deformation within shallow wedge material. Integrated P−T−t−d analysis reveals that the LP/HT belt is formed between the stages of frontal accretion (D 1 ) and basal underplating of basic rocks (D 2 ) forming blueschists at c . 300 Ma. A timeline evolution relating the formation of blueschists and the formation and deformation of LP/HT mineral assemblages at shallower levels, combined with published geochronological/thermobarometric/geochemistry data suggests a cause−effect relation between the basal accretion of basic rocks and the deformation of the shallower LP/HT belt. The S 2 foliation that formed during basal accretion initiated near the base of the accretionary wedge at ~30 km depth at c . 308 Ma. Later, the S 2 foliation developed at c . 300 Ma and ~15 km depth shortly after the emplacement of the granitoids and formation of the (LP/HT) peak metamorphic mineral assemblages. This shallow deformation may reflect a perturbation in the long-term subduction dynamics (e.g. entrance of a seamount), which would in turn have contributed to the coeval exhumation of the nearby blueschists at c . 300 Ma. Finally, 40 Ar− 39 Ar cooling ages reveal that foliated HP/LT rocks were already at ~350 °C at c . 292 Ma, indicating a rapid cooling for this metamorphic system.     Description: The allochthonous Cabo Ortegal Complex (NW Iberian Massif) contains a ~ 500 m thick serpentinite-matrix mélange located in the lowest structural position, the Sómozas Mélange. The mélange occurs at the leading edge of a thick nappe pile constituted by a variety of terranes transported to the East (present-day coordinates; NW Iberian allochthonous complexes), with continental and oceanic affinities, and represents a Variscan suture. Among other types of metaigneous (calc-alkaline suite dated at 527-499 Ma) and metasedimentary blocks, it contains close-packed pillow lavas and broken pillow-breccias with a metahyaloclastitic matrix formed by muscovite – paragonite – margarite – garnet – chlorite – kyanite – hematite – epidote – quartz - rutile. Pseudosection modelling in the MnCNTKFMASHO system indicates metamorphic peak conditions of ~ 17.5-18 kbar and ~ 550 °C followed by near-isothermal decompression. This P-T evolution indicates subduction/accretion of an arc-derived section of peri-Gondwanan transitional crust. Subduction below the Variscan orogenic wedge evolved to continental collision with important dextral component. Closure of the remaining oceanic peri-Gondwanan domain and associated release of fluid led to hydration of the overlying mantle wedge and the formation of a low-viscosity subduction channel, where return flow formed the mélange. The submarine metavolcanic rocks were deformed and detached from the subducting transitional crust and eventually incorporated into the subduction channel, where they experienced fast exhumation. Due to the cryptic nature of the high- P metamorphism preserved in its tectonic blocks, the significance of the Somozas Mélange had remained elusive, but it is made clear here for the first time as an important tectonic boundary within the Variscan Orogen formed during the late stages of the continental convergence leading to the assembly of Pangea.     Description: In this study, we analyzed the effects of breed, diet energy source, and their interaction on adipose tissue transcriptome in growing Iberian and Duroc pigs. The study comprised 29 Iberian and 19 Duroc males, which were kept under identical management conditions except the nutritional treatment. Two isoenergetic diets were used with 6% high oleic sunflower oil (HO) or carbohydrates (CH) as energy sources. All animals were slaughtered after 47 days of treatment at an average live weight of 51.2 kg. Twelve animals from each breed (six fed each diet) were employed for ham subcutaneous adipose tissue RNA-Seq analysis. The data analysis was performed using two different bioinformatic pipelines. We detected 837 and 1456 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) according to breed, depending on the pipeline. Due to the strong effect of breed on transcriptome, the effect of the diet was separately evaluated in the two breeds. We identified 207 and 57 DEGs depending on diet in Iberian and Duroc pigs, respectively. A joint analysis of both effects allowed the detection of some breed–diet interactions on transcriptome, which were inferred from RNA-Seq and quantitative PCR data. The functional analysis showed the enrichment of functions related to growth and tissue development, inflammatory response, immune cell trafficking, and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and allowed the identification of potential regulators. The results indicate different effects of diet on adipose tissue gene expression between breeds, affecting relevant biological pathways.
