    Notes: Abstract. We analyze the one-loop effects (strong and electroweak) on the unconventional top quark decay mode $t\rightarrow H^{+}\, b$ within the MSSM. The results are presented in the on-shell renormalization scheme with a physically well motivated definition of $\tan\beta$ . The study of this process at the quantum level is useful to unravel the potential supersymmetric nature of the charged Higgs emerging from that decay. As compared with the standard mode $t\rightarrow W^{+}\,b$ , the corrections to $t\rightarrow H^{+}\, b$ are large, slowly decoupling and persist at a sizeable level even for all sparticle masses well above the LEP 200 discovery range. As a matter of fact, the potential size of the SUSY effects, which amount to corrections of several ten percent, could counterbalance the standard QCD corrections and even make them to appear with the “wrong” sign. Therefore, if the charged Higgs decay of the top quark is kinematically allowed – a possibility which is not excluded by the existing measurements of the branching ratio $BR(t\rightarrow W^{+}\,b)$ at the Tevatron – it could be an invaluable laboratory to search for “virtual” supersymmetry. While a first significant test of these effects could possibly be performed at the upgraded Tevatron, a more precise verification would most likely be carried out in future experiments at the LHC.

    Notes: Abstract  The ion Ca2+ has been shown to play an important role in a wide variety of cellular functions, one of them being related to cell differentiation in which nerve growth factor (NGF) is involved. Chromaffin cells obtained from adrenals of 2- to 3-day-old rats were cultured for 7 days. During this time, these cells were subjected to the application of either NGF or extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF MF). Since this induced cell differentiation toward neuronal-like cells, the mechanism by which this occurred was studied. When the L-Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine was applied simultaneously with ELF MF, this differentiation did not take place, but it did when an N-Ca2+ channel blocker was used. In contrast, none of the Ca2+ channel blockers prevented differentiation in the presence of NGF. In addition, Bay K-8644, an L-Ca2+ channel agonist, increased both the percentage of differentiated cells and neurite length in the presence of ELF MF. This effect was much weaker in the presence of NGF. [3H]-noradrenaline release was reduced by nifedipine, suggesting an important role for L-Ca2+ channels in neurotransmitter release. Total high voltage Ca2+ currents were significantly increased in ELF MF-treated cells with NGF, but these currents in ELF MF-treated cells were more sensitive to nifedipine. Amperometric analysis of catecholamine release revealed that the KCl-induced activity of cells stimulated to differentiate by ELF MF is highly sensitive to L-type Ca2+ channel blockers. A possible mechanism to explain the way in which the application of magnetic fields can induce differentation of chromaffin cells into neuronal-like cells is proposed.

    Description: In Listening for Africa David F. Garcia explores how a diverse group of musicians, dancers, academics, and activists engaged with the idea of black music and dance's African origins between the 1930s and 1950s. Garcia examines the work of figures ranging from Melville J. Herskovits, Katherine Dunham, and Asadata Dafora to Duke Ellington, Dámaso Pérez Prado, and others who believed that linking black music and dance with Africa and nature would help realize modernity's promises of freedom in the face of fascism and racism in Europe and the Americas, colonialism in Africa, and the nuclear threat at the start of the Cold War. In analyzing their work, Garcia traces how such attempts to link black music and dance to Africa unintentionally reinforced the binary relationships between the West and Africa, white and black, the modern and the primitive, science and magic, and rural and urban. It was, Garcia demonstrates, modernity's determinations of unraced, heteronormative, and productive bodies, and of scientific truth that helped defer the realization of individual and political freedom in the world.

    Description: This study presents the experimental and modeling results of CO 2 injection and transport in the vadose zone performed in PISCO2 facilities at the ES.CO2 center in Ponferrada (North Spain). During 46 days of experiments, 62.10 kg of CO 2 were injected through 16 micro-injectors in a 35 m 3 experimental unit fi lled with sandy material. Monitoring and mapping of surface CO 2 fl ux were performed periodically to assess the evolution of CO 2 migration through the soil and to the atmosphere. Numerical simulations were run using TOUGH2 code with EOS7CA research module considering two phases (gas and liquid) and three components (H 2 O, CO 2 , air). Two layers (sand, gravel) and atmosphere boundary were implemented taking into account heterogeneous soils, homogeneous soil, rainfall, temperature, and liquid saturation to allow a better understanding of CO 2 behavior in the vadose zone. This combined experimental and modeling approach shows that CO 2 leakage in the vadose zone quickly comes out through preferential migration pathways and spots with the ranges of fl uxes in the ground/surface interface from 2.5 to 600 g·m −2 ·day −1 . This gas channeling is mainly related to soil compaction and climatic perturbation. This has signifi cant implications for designadapted detection and monitoring strategies of early leakage in commercial CO 2 storage.

    Description: The hippocampus plays a critical role in episodic memory: the sequential representation of visited places and experienced events. This function is mirrored by hippocampal activity that self organizes into sequences of neuronal activation that integrate spatiotemporal information. What are the underlying mechanisms of such integration is still unknown. Single cell activity was recently shown to combine time and distance information; however, it remains unknown whether a degree of tuning between space and time can be defined at the network level. Here, combining daily calcium imaging of CA1 sequence dynamics in running head-fixed mice and network modeling, we show that CA1 network activity tends to represent a specific combination of space and time at any given moment, and that the degree of tuning can shift within a continuum from 1 day to the next. Our computational model shows that this shift in tuning can happen under the control of the external drive power. We propose that extrinsic global inputs shape the nature of spatiotemporal integration in the hippocampus at the population level depending on the task at hand, a hypothesis which may guide future experimental studies.

    Description: Can the properties of the thermodynamic limit of a many-body quantum system be extrapolated by analyzing a sequence of finite-size cases? We present models for which such an approach gives completely misleading results: translationally invariant, local Hamiltonians on a square lattice with open boundary conditions and constant spectral gap, which have a classical product ground state for all system sizes smaller than a particular threshold size, but a ground state with topological degeneracy for all system sizes larger than this threshold. Starting from a minimal case with spins of dimension 6 and threshold lattice size 15×15, we show that the latter grows faster than any computable function with increasing local spin dimension. The resulting effect may be viewed as a unique type of quantum phase transition that is driven by the size of the system rather than by an external field or coupling strength. We prove that the construction is thermally robust, showing that these effects are in principle accessible to experimental observation.

    Description: Online social media are information resources that can have a transformative power in society. While the Web was envisioned as an equalizing force that allows everyone to access information, the digital divide prevents large amounts of people from being present online. Online social media, in particular, are prone to gender inequality, an important issue given the link between social media use and employment. Understanding gender inequality in social media is a challenging task due to the necessity of data sources that can provide large-scale measurements across multiple countries. Here, we show how the Facebook Gender Divide (FGD), a metric based on aggregated statistics of more than 1.4 billion users in 217 countries, explains various aspects of worldwide gender inequality. Our analysis shows that the FGD encodes gender equality indices in education, health, and economic opportunity. We find gender differences in network externalities that suggest that using social media has an added value for women. Furthermore, we find that low values of the FGD are associated with increases in economic gender equality. Our results suggest that online social networks, while suffering evident gender imbalance, may lower the barriers that women have to access to informational resources and help to narrow the economic gender gap.
